did I make the right choice?

If you like it, then its ok with me.  I of course would have bought Close to the Edge.

all of them are worth buying. Personally I prefer Foxtrot out of these 4, then CTTE, then SEBTP and last is Tubular bells which is nice but not even close to the other 3.

this isn't an introduction to prog for me, but a continuation of buying classic symphonic prog.  I have quite a selection of non classic symphonic prog in my collection. 
So far Selling England By the Pound is just average, nothing special so far and Gabriel's voice is a little raspy for my taste.... But I have at least 10 listens to go before a make a good judgement, I will either be addicted to it or will never listen to it again or will still think its just average.  Like most prog music it should take some time to adjust to.

Why is there such a belief that early Marillion and early Genesis is so similar? I can't hear it, and Fish does NOT sound like Gabriel.  I have all Marillion's albums with Fish and now 1 Genesis album with Gabriel and don't hear the similarities

Well, I think you made a fine choice, Video Vertigo. I also started my Genesis collection with SEBTP and all I can say is, it was a good thing that I did! I was hooked on it for weeks, until I went and got Foxtrot next...and it was such a disappointment. Nursery Cryme did not improve on things and I was beginning to think that Genesis as a whole was not for me after all. Of course, as is in my nature, I didn't give up and kept on listening to the other two records, and now I do like Foxtrot quite a bit -still not that enthusiastic about Supper's Ready as a whole but hey, I know I am in a very small minority there!

And what's wrong with More Fool Me, it's a sweet song!  

Anyway, get CttE next, as it is simply the best.

I think SEBTP is the better produced Hackett/Gabriel era Genesis' album, maybe even better than The Lamb...

Video Vertigo, I'd say you're on the right track, however.

What I've been doing is going for the most highly rated album by a particular artist if I've never heard 'em. That way, you'll pretty much know you're either going to like them, or not.

SEBTP is IMO the best of them, and the most accesible=the best to begin with of the four.

CTTE and Foxtrot are both brilliant. Tubular Bells I only remember that I've listened to it once, but I don't remember how it sounded.

good choise. i dont find anything essential in selling englan by the pound.

I'd put YES's CttE as fractionally more essential to the annals of Progdom personally, but SEbtP is my personal favourite GENESIS record (apart from the cover - horrible pic with disgusting cream surround!)

Never really like tubular bells, it's the voice introducing the instruments that narks me.

It's still the right choice, because if you don't like that Genesis album, you probably won't like any of them (at least in the Gabriel period), and now you know!
