Well, it's heavy metal, innit? Wink

I don't know what more there is to say. Personal taste, that's all.

^ It's interesting how the language has mutated and morphed over time e.g. If you were deemed to be talking out your fanny in the UK, that would be a matter for the medical profession (or an exorcist)

you are the one seemingly annoyed that an American band spelled their band name differently from British English.

Gosh. An Irish acquaintance of mine "corrected" my pronunciation of "son", saying that it cannot be uttered like "sun". I filled him in, saying that the Americans do it that way.

BTW I prefer the British spellings and pronunciations of the words, but I have been exposed to the American English a lot, so I sometimes flop.

It's called 'English' for a reason kiddies. LOL I do enjoy the Dillinger Escape Plan (they strike me as very heavily influenced by jazz harmonies which I don't hear in other metal) and Animals as Leaders (whose music covers a wide gamut of dynamics redolent of Funk and Electronica which is absent from much of the metal I've heard) but that's about it. Addemdum. I like Riverside and some Opeth but don't associate either with being exclusively Metal, Prog variety or otherwise.

maybe, but it's how Americans spell it - as in "movie theater".

Exactly. And people often make jokes that Americans can’t spell.

maybe, but that's not the issue here, because after all there is no misspelling in the band's name.

Dream Theater (who also can't spell) are guilty of egregious metric w.a.n.k.e.r.y aforethought. Joining them in the dock m'lud are Meshuggah. Quite sardonic I dare say. Ouch
What do you mean Dream theater can't spell? Confused
I get it DT are guilty of the so called "w**kery", but not as bad as other bands, especially in the tech/extreme subgenre.

Meshuggah is a love or hate kind of band even for those who enjoy tech/extreme or progressive metal. They have a new album out, I'll have to see what they came up with in a genre that is already tired (the djenty sound).

As for Death, they raised the bar high for extreme metal, so they'll have my respect for that.

I wouldn't judge a whole genre of music based on 3 bands though. It's fine if you dislike this kind of music, no need for that mockery.

The unrelenting sound of it is wearying to listen to, the lack of textural diversity and kindergarten dynamics of 'loud or louder than that', overly compressed production that squashes the life out of any performance, the faux angst of the singer 'Colin' an ex carpet-fitter from Ipswich a.k.a. 'Belial' summoning infernal bullies to punish earthbound bullies who called him a t.i.t at school or wouldn't go on dates.
the conceit of thinking 'odd' time signatures = complexity just by adding or subtracting beats from forgettable riffs. (the list goes on)

now I wish you posted some examples (bands) where you noticed all these negative aspects.

This really does make it appear that you have listened to very little prog metal - or, perhaps, just simply the “wrong” prog metal for you.

There are definitely prog metal bands that I have heard that fit your description - and guess what, I don’t like them either. But there are plenty of other prog metal bands that sound nothing at all like that - and guess what, I like some of them. And, yes, I don’t like some of them, too. But what I don’t do, is make a horrifically generalised stereotype of an entire genre that has sounds and styles far beyond the simplistic criticism my stereotype implies describes it all.
