For every Big Generator there's a Some Great Reward (by Depeche Mode). I'll take a trade off in crap prog for great new wave any day.

One must also remember that the 80's saw the apparition of a second wave of RIO bands: Thinking Plague, 5UU's, Motor Totemist Guid... In France, some small bands perpetuated the traditions: Asia Minor, Eskaton, Minimum Vital...
One of my favorite band, Etron Fou Leloublan, released two albums in the 70's and the four other LPs in the 80's. And if we are to talk about the Japanese bands: from Gerard to Ruins, including After Dinner, the eccentrics seemed to run in the streets! |

Surprised nobody has mentioned Eloy. They released a couple of decent albums in the 80s, most notably Planets (1981), Time To Turn (1982) and Metromania (1984) However, my personal favourite is:
Celelalte Cuvinte - Celelalte Cuvinte (1987) |

The 80's, as every decade, had good and bad things. Notable bands (prog and not prog) started to create awesome music during those years. So the 80's aren't as bad as some people think... I really love 80's Crimson, Nude, etc, etc.
I think people don't like the 80's because they know they had to wear the most excruciatingly awful clothes, and don't want to be remembered about it.

As the big names in prog went commercial the best thing you could do is open your mind to music that didn't conform to the stereotypical prog. And I'm fairly certain we weren't referring to it as prog back they anyway. I think art rock and fusion were applicable but I don't think myself or my friends bothered with labels in the first place. If anyone cares, I'm going to highlight what I was listening to when it was new. Edited by Slartibartfast - March 03 2012 at 06:42 |

Yeah quality list Slarti. There was plenty of good music in the 80s. Not all prog or prog related . There was a lot of utter rubbish in the charts and some prog decided they wanted more girls at their gigs but hey .
Cocteaus and The Cure Siouxsie et al

Good man Slarti!
Although Tangerine Dream's Optical Race isn't one I myself would've chosen as flag bearer for the good 80s releases But we can't all run around eating the same stuff. My sis hates cheese fx. |

Well, it marked the death of Gentle Giant and several of our revered bands catching commecialitis.
If you think the '80's sucked, here's what you might have missed (hell even I missed some of these when they first came out. I narrowed the list down a bit): Bowie, David Scary Monsters 1980 - Bowie made some of his best stuff when he worked with prog musicians. Brand X Do They Hurt? 1980 - the X does some really heavy stuff. Budd, Harold / Brian Eno Ambient 2/The Platform of Mirror 1980 - ambient doesn't get better than this. Bush, Kate Never for Ever 1980 - Kate ascending. Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band Doc at the Radar Station 1980 - no Trout Mask but that's a good thing. Di Meola, Al Spendido Hotel 1980 - Al's sprawling experiment. Roller Jubilee actually got used in a Minute Rice commercial. Di Meola, Al/John McLaughlin/Paco de Lucia Friday Night In San Francisco 1980 - one of the great acoustic guitar trio albums. Dixie Dregs Dregs of the Earth 1980 - the Dregs were still going strong. Eno, Brian-David Byrne My Life in the Bush of Ghosts (Remaster) 1980 - can't say enough about this one. An experimental album that worked really well. Frith, Fred Speechless 1980 - Fred's music is definitely a highlight of the '80's Gabriel, Peter III 1980 - Peter continues to evolve in mysterious ways. Gentle Giant Civilian 1980 - people seem to hate this one. Major improvement over you know what. Hackett, Steve Defector (Remaster) 1980 - Steve would fizzle later but not here. Hall, Daryl Sacred Songs 1980 - Daryl Hall? Prog? You better believe it. Hampton, Co. Bruce and The Late Bronze Age Outside Looking Out 1980 - no point in talking about this guy and crew because I have yet to hear anyone say they've ever heard the stuff around here. Your loss. Hof, Jasper Van't Live In Montreaux 1980 - great fusion from a guy that I was informed once was just a jazz guy. Johnson, David Earle with Jan Hammer Hip Address 1980 - DEJ is one of those buried treasures. League of Gentlemen, The Thrang Thrang Gozinbulx 1980 - I wouldn't have given a rat's ass about this band if Fripp weren't in it. Metheny, Pat & Lyle Mays As Falls Wichita, So Falls Wichita Falls 1980 - not much in Metheny land of the '80's that I didn't like. I'm going to stop now but... Police, The Zenyatta Mondatta 1980 - Psychedelic Furs, The Psychedelic Furs, The 1980 Rutherford, Mike Smallcreep's Day 1980 Talking Heads Remain In Light (Remaster) 1980 Tibbetts, Steve Yr 1980 XTC Black Sea 1980 Bruninghaus, Rainer Freigeweht 1981 Budd, Harold Serpent (In Quicksilver/Abandoned Cities, The 1981 Byrne, David Complete Score from "The Catherine Wheel", The 1981 Hine, Rupert Immunity 1981 King Crimson Discipline 1981 Pastorius, Jaco Word of Mouth 1981 Phillips, Anthony Private Parts & Pieces III 1981 Police, The Ghost In The Machine 1981 Psychedelic Furs, The Talk Talk Talk 1981 Sky Sky 2 1981 Sky Sky 3 1981 Soft Machine Land of Cockayne 1981 Synergy Audion 1981 Tibbetts, Steve Northern Song 1981 Zappa, Frank You Are What You Is 1981 Belew, Adrian Lone Rhino 1982 Bush, Kate Dreaming, The 1982 Free Flight Jazz/Classical Union, The 1982 Gabriel, Peter Security 1982 Glass, Phillip Glassworks 1982 Hampton, Co. Ok. i also agree with ivan, the 70's were over and something else had to rise.
Bands had to evolve themselves and it's perfectly fine, how they did it is another story. Some people grew on 80's genesis and love them for this era, they are not aware that once there was 'supper's ready'!! |

And what is? 60s and 70s saw the inception and expansion of rock music as we know it, so it will hold a pride of place in the history of rock music. |

When I came to this forum,. I believed that the 80's sucked, but the more Prog I listen, the less I agree with this.
The 80's was a transitional decade more than a bad one, people in the 80's didn't wanted to listen about giant plants invading England or a 20 minutes song with a 10 minutes keyboard solo, so the bands had to change their approach to survive. Sadly the experiment failed and instead of gaining mainstream listeners for Prog, this bands lost Prog fans who didn't liked the change, but if it wasn't for this bands that insisted with a dying genre, today Prog would be history. Of course there were great albums made in the 80's, but it's uncompareable to the 70's.
It just wasn't the time for prog anymore. |

Prog as such was not a force in the mainstream but perhaps that is also on account of rather inflexible notions of prog (without meaning to fuel the prog v/s progressive debate again)? Seriously, the 80s had Cocteau Twins, Dead Can Dance, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Swans, Police. The 80s was surely the most important and defining decade for metal. On the jazzy side, Alan Holdsworth and Donald Fagen unleashed their solo careers. I believe Metheny had a very fruitful 80s too, though I am not familiar with his 80s albums. I wonder what it is that makes people focus on the Madonnas and Spandau Ballets of the 80s but not the Eagles and Olivia Newton Johns of the 70s or the Celine Dions of the 90s or the Shakiras of the noughties, etc. But the notion of 80s being a wholesale abomination has taken root so firmly now that it seems to be unshakable. Pity, because there were many wonderful artists who released great albums in that decade as well. Edited by rogerthat - March 02 2012 at 21:34 |

Definitely - and Moving Pictures for Rush!. Its still a fact that the 80s was the toughest time for most prog bands. Some bowed out altogether and some just became commercial pop <cough>Genesis<cough>. Then Marillion came along and kept the dream alive by reinventing prog with Neo. |

After I attempted to list the top 1000 albums I found that the 80s were the most sparse as far as reviews and as far as masterpiece albums - there is no doubt the 80s had some brilliant albums but simply did not measure up to the other decades following the 70s - the golden era of prog.
Heres the list of 80s albums you must hear before you die... as far as ratings and notoriety are concerned: Some of these are only listed due to one or two excellent songs but nevertheless heres the list which is way less than any of the albums from the 70s or 90s or beyond. 1980 471 472 Memento Z Banalnym Tryptykiem 473 Peter Gabriel (3 - "Melt") 474 475 Familjesprickor (Family Cracks) 476 477 478 Commercial Album 479 480 481 The Turn Of A Friendly Card 482 - live Harmonium En Tournée 483 - live 484 - live 1981 485 486 487 Alturas de Macchu Picchu 488 Mystical Adventures 489 Between Flesh and Divine 490 491 492 493 Computer World (Computerwelt) 494 495 496 – live 497 – live 1982 498 499 500 Peter Gabriel (4 - "Security" or "Mask") 501 502 503 Fact And Fiction 504 505 Ship Arriving Too Late To Save A Drowning Witch 506 The Broadsword And The Beast 507 Eye In The Sky 1983 508 509 Script For A Jester's Tear 510 511 512 513 514 – live 515 – live Logos...
