He's really good for playing in a band like that. Always kinda liked his drumming style during the time I listened a lot to SOAD. EDIT: Oh - and yeah: Vinnie Paul <3 I love the way he used the ride cymbal to create that brutal kind of swing Pantera had.

Yea, hawkcwg...Been a drummer for close to 11 years now. Well, started playing a set in 9 grade though...
And I LOVE Vinnie Paul. He may not be a beast, or very technical but I just love the way he sounds. He lays down some great beats.
And Im glad to see some love for Lopez. Yea, I figured Haake, Portnoy, and Carey would get alot of votes, and what do you know! Lopez is not well known in the metal community I suppose, which is a shame...one of my favorites. Too bad he left Opeth, (was it blood poisining?)
Honestly: My favorite is Adler, followed by Haake, then probably Lopez. Bittner and Herrera round out my top 5.
Oh, and this is just a personal thing for me: What do you all think of John Dolmayan? SOAD was my first real band I was into, so I have soft spot for him.

True. And he's a heckofa nice guy too.

Lopez actually is one of my favourites ever. His fusing of latin drumming and metal drumming is really unique and stylish. And plus his work on Deliverance and Ghost Reveries is some of the most virtuose playing I've heard in prog metal. You gotta love his signature beat also
As for Portnoy, for me he just sounds like he's trying to fit in with the rest of the prog drummers out there. Doesn't really innovate the drums, just mimmicks a load of styles already used.

Most people probably don't like Lopez or haven't heard of him because he's not popular in the "drumming community" guys like derek roddy, portnoy, haake, those guys are famous drum gods haha. and by the way the intro to Honor thy father by mike portnoy and dream theater was one of those songs that made me want to be a drummer, when i heard that i was floored and like OH MY GOD!! thats awesome. And mike portnoy is a pretty amazing drummer if you like dream theater and all his other bands, he's got some insane mental and physical chops, has a lot of signature moves like the four on hands, two on the feet, 4 and 2 again around the toms. thats always fun to hear him use that. and now listen to almost any prog metal or general metal band, and they are all using that lick. I've even heard that same honor thy father lick in the beginning with practically the whole thing plagarized and made into an intro with a change of like one or two beats only haha.

I always thought Mike Portnoy's playing was a bit generic to be truthful, as skilled as he is. He definitely doesn't have such an instantly recognizable style like Haake and Carey.

With those options, I gotta go with Reinert, though I wouldn't call him a pure metal drummer. Hoglan is a beast and for a man that big he makes it look simple.

I love Hoglans playing actually, its very melodic. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6tJbZLQ4Qy4 and i love the drummer from Divine Heresy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vSDOP6OqPnA

JJLEHTO I knew you where a drummer haha. Alright this is too hard, I voted for Derek Roddy because nobody else did, and because he is an insane player, and I love all his youtube videos haha, and he is also a well rounded fantastic player.
But this poll was too hard haha. I love a lot of those drummers so here are my favorites-
Thomas Haake (Meshuggah) Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater) George Kollias (Nile) Derek Roddy (Nile) And Chris Adler from Lamb Of God
These guys are Metal Guys to and some of my favorites. Terry Bozzio, Tim Alexander, Gavin Harrison
I also really love Mario Duplantier from Gojira, I've seen him play in person.
But my all time favorites are, and you should be ashamed you didn't put these guys on there haha MIKE MANGINI, Marco Minneman VIRGIL DONATI, and THOMAS LANG!!!!!!!

I voted other, because I consider Sieges Even's Alex Hotzwarth to be on par with the best on the above list.
Possibly not better, but he just has to be mentioned.
Just listen to Uneven or Sophisticated. Unbelievable!

I've had Dream Theater on in the car and have come to the realization that Portnoy just could be the best drummer of all time. Just my opinion, of course.

I chose Portnoy, but not just because of his work with Dream Theater. He is quite a driving force in the band's dynamic, but I admire the tightness and conciseness of his drumming more as it appears in Transatlantic's music. I think you should edit the poll options so it also mentions that he drums for Transatlantic.
Of course, there's a lot more Dream Theater out there to sample for his drumming technique (I can't wait for the new Transatlantic album!), and also, he isn't really a -metal- drummer in Transatlantic, it being a chiefly progressive group. So, it's probably fine the way it is.
But yeah, definitely Mike Portnoy.
