Yep Peter and anyone who says the same I totally agree, with you, THE
BEATLES ARE AND WILL BE THE WORLDS GREATEST BAND EVER!!!!!!!!!!The
influence they have had in music in general, is amazing. You can ask
many Prog artists which are their main inspiration or favorite band(s)
and they will very possibly answer THE BEATLES. But QUEEN, or LED
ZEPPELIN would come in very close second...

I began this forum for exactly this reason. I knew that the most said name would be the Beatles. It's funny to see the different opinions we prog lovers have on these 4 guys. For me, I do have to say they are the greatest band of all time. But others, thanks for your opinions.

I like many, many bands, but the "greatest" of all time would have to be the Beatles. Their influence was ENORMOUS, their material of a consistently very high calibre, and no band was ever that huge before, since, or will be in the future, I'm sure.
(Note that this is not the same thing as my favourite band of all time -- that's a tough choice, but I'd probably say Genesis, or the Who.)

The Beatles might be successful and more than a little influential, but for me, these chaps:
are the greatest band of all time. That's right. Gentle Giant are the greatest band of all time. You heard me.
Why? Well, apart from all five being hugely adept musicians, capable of
playing countless instruments to astonishingly high standards, their
music pushed the boundaries of modern composition more effectively than
any "modern classical" composer, avant garde nutter writing symphonies
for choir and toaster or indeed any other rock band by drawing on more
genres than you can shake a stick at, adapting them to their own unique
sound, arranging and composing their work in a supremely rich and dense
manner and all the while writing songs that YOU COULD SING ALONG TO.
They could be catchy, quirky, powerful, humourous, heart-wrenchingly
beautiful and downright surreal, but they always always always sounded
like themselves. Okay, so they produced some dud albums. I'd maintain
that so did the Beatles. They didn't have the money, the far-reaching
success of the former, but artistically no one can top them. And what's
music about - money or art?

As much as I love The Beatles, and believe me I DO! I wouldn't call them the "greatest" band ever. The most influential, I think would be the best description for them. "Greatest" is basically relevant and more subject to opinion.
The Beatles, without a doubt paved the way for just about everything we hear today. But the greatest? That's really overstating things.

My favorite band is Yes, but if you want to make things a little bit more objective, I guess that no band will beat the Beatles. In terms of progression, variety of styles, intelligent compositions, great production, and: there would be no progrock without The Beatles.

the grateful dead hands down.....btw, i hate how everyone says its the beatles because they know all those songs...teh beatles are the backstreet boys after theyve paid soembody to teach them an instrument....i hate even more how they are constantly credited wiuth being the "start" of rock and roll, they werent....have yu people ever heard of chuck berry or little richard?rock and roll was started among black american artists struggling to break the chains of r&b and jazz and usher in a new sound that wasnt as derivative from teh classical approach
