The Beautiful South - weak irony because they were Northeners
Oasis, named after the dull green foam used by flower-arrangers

They are named after the U2 spyplane that flew over the USSR causing abig diplomatic incident. Back in the '50's or '60's I think.
I don't know the details.
Hmm...yes I remember, it was actually shot down.
|
I always thought they'd named themselves after a german submarine - Unterseeboot 2 (U-2).
|
I've just done some research, and it seems that I have just presumed, for many years, that this is the origin of their name.
It seems that when they were called "The Hype", they decided on a new name. They had a list of six suggestions and chose "U2" as being the most ambiguous and one that none of the band could agree on.
I been wrong all these years!

Crispy Ambulance always need to show up on this sort of list. Because they had a bad, bad name.
My least favorite band names (but they don't meet the requirement of having made decent music, if that is a requirement for inclusion here) have to be those of the plethora of contemporary pop-rock acts whose names are entire phrases or sentences. I wonder if this will be what we remember about mainstream music circa 2007.

Another one that springs to mind: 'Red Lorry Yellow Lorry' - it's even a tongue twister.

'U2' is a long obsolete size of battery (here in the UK at least).

I loathe every single second of every song I've heard from them. Glad they no longer exist, they were polluting the airwaves at one point. |
