Subject: Worst Band Names Ever?

There is a current topic about unimaginative album titles, which got me thinking about really awful names chosen by bands that were/are actually very good.

Two that spring to mind are:

The Flaming Groovies
Love Sculpture

The worst band ever has the worst name ever :

Hootie and the Blowfish.

I loathe every single second of every song I've heard from them.  Glad they no longer exist, they were polluting the airwaves at one point.

Crispy Ambulance always need to show up on this sort of list.  Because they had a bad, bad name.

My least favorite band names (but they don't meet the requirement of having made decent music, if that is a requirement for inclusion here) have to be those of the plethora of contemporary pop-rock acts whose names are entire phrases or sentences.  I wonder if this will be what we remember about mainstream music circa 2007.

I've just done some research, and it seems that I have just presumed, for many years, that this is the origin of their name.

It seems that when they were called "The Hype", they decided on a new name. They had a list of six suggestions and chose "U2" as being the most ambiguous and one that none of the band could agree on.

My vote goes to a certain Massachusetts-based grindcore band led by Seth Putnam, whose name is not apropos for a family-friendly website.  Then again, I suppose that could be argued against because it was INTENDED to be a bad name.....

The worst part about the name Hootie & the Blowfish is that it implied that someone in the band was named Hootie, which was not the case (Darius Rucker named the band after two of his classmates, neither of whom was in the band).

But really, the worst names are not necessarily the weirdest or most disgusting - because they serve a purpose, which is to get attention - but the names that are so unoriginal that you can tell that no thought went into them.  (I mean, the Killers?  Come on.....)

"Black Vomit" is also a song by the noise band Wolf Eyes.

Bad names, hmmm...

Genesis
Yes
Dream Theater

Oh wait, this was supposed to be about very good bands with bad names well, in that case, Gentle Giant.

But this band takes the cake, I guess (although the name is actually kinda awesome    )

I heard that part of the reason they chose U2 is because it's not specific to one language.

Ok...some unimaginative names...all three are bands that I really dig too.

PFM - named after a bakery.
Banco - named after a bank.
Bruford - named after a drummer.

Such imaginative music, such unimaginative names.

But if it's gross names that we are talking about, there was a Cincinnati band that went by the name of Bloody Discharge.  Dead

in the year of 1966, Keith Moon was readdy to left The Who coz of one fight with Pete Townshend in the studio... it was really fight, and Keith said to Pete that he will founded his own band with tne name - Led Zeppelin! Pete was very angree to his drummer and said that "new" Moon's band is a very stupid idea, "as same as new band name". ok, so few years after, (1968)  Moon said to Page & Co ("New Yardbirds" )  to named their new as Led Zeppelin.  this is a true story! It's a true legend, but the exact details are fuzzy... the phrase "it'll go over like a lead balloon" already existed and was modified to 'zeppelin'. Whomever decided to use it for a band name and how that got transferd to Page's band is unclear. Peter Grant decided to change the spelling of 'lead' to 'led' to avoid mispronounciation and cause it was more fun a name.

I remember a buddy of mine kept bringing up this prog band called Spock's Beard and thinking, "That is the dumbest name for a band that I have ever heard." Little did I know that they'd be one of my favorites eventually.

Another name that I find stupid is Modest Mouse. Death Cab For Cutie is pretty stupid, too.

My Dying Bride(A Quite Good band with a Very, Very Good vocalist and a godawful name, they don't risk being namedropped too often by anyone who wants to retain a sense of dignity), Gothminister(Just bad, in every respect), and let's say Anathema.

By contrast SSV-NSMABAAOTWMODAACOTIATW is a Very Very Funny name, as is Zweck, but only if you are Norwegian rather than German.

Sorry people, the music may be good, but Sleepytime Gorilla Museum and Godspeed You! Black Emperor are quite idiotic names...

^ They're ok-ish names... in the "trying to be special so much that they're nothing really special" - category. Though I quite like the name Sleepytime Gorilla Museum.

I like the name Spock's Beard, and I suppose Star Trek fans must love it!

:edit: silliest artist name I know of must propably be Yngwie Malmsteen.

PS: Anal C**t would have been a cool, provocative name, if it wasn't for the fact that the p*ssies put "AC" on their album covers instead of the full name....

There were some bands doing the rounds in Aus. a while back - 'I Spit in your Gravy' , 'Le Club Foot', 'Chinless Elite' and 'Deckchairs Overboard' - actually, I don't mind the last two. [I used to play in 'Pin Sandwich' which was pretty bad, in more ways than one]! ! !

Hapshash and the Colored Coat. The music was as awful as the name.
Hatfield and the North is just as bad a name; they are named after a road sign on the M1 in Great Britain.
When I was in school a friend of mine played guitar in a band named "Urinprobe", another in a band called "Coitus Interruptus". None of these names were any good either.

About U2: I always thought the name stood for "You Too", which would have been an allusion to the last words of Caesar.

In Finland in the 70s a very popular pop/rock band was called Coitus Int.

There are a number of Japanese punk bands with bizzare names such as Mr. Children, Bump of Chicken, and The Piss.

As for English speaking bands, Panic! At the Disco and Clap Your Hands say Yeah are the worst names

These names are pretty good, in my opinion. Panic! At the Disco's music, however, is completely lifeless and utterly boring. I haven't heard the Japanese bands.

Yep, good stuff indeed! Thumbs%20Up Probably the trend was then to give an impression how "far out" or "stoned" they are. Tongue

The Chocolate Watch Band appeared in a cult movie "Riot on Sunset Strip", which would be a fun film to see. Apparently it is not yet released on a DVD or even a VHS? There's a really brutal performance from them on that one, the tune is called "Sitting There Standing". The singer really sees things which other people don't! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6iSP7ytIo_M - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6iSP7ytIo_M Later they did two IMO quite sophisticated pscyhdelic albums with more imagination used, as that song is quite basic 60's R'n'B.

Duran Duran are named after the angel in the movie "Barbarella" starring Jane Fonda. The actual spelling of the name is "Durand Durand" though, but the "d" is not pronounced, so probably the band thought that "Duran Duran" is the right spelling.

Lynryd Skynryd comes to mind.

The Flaming Lips.

It's a Beautiful Day. (great band, though)

CCR. Just a stupid, stupid name.

And Hootie and the Blowfish was just too stupid for words, and so was their music. They had more than the alloted 15 minutes of fame. Good riddance. Hope you saved your money, fellas.
