Been playing electric guitar since high school.  Currently, my main focus is on bebop and fusion.

...and trying to incorporate elements of the above into my prog metal playing...

I play guitar, but only for 2 years and even for that time I'm quite sucky. To some level I think I kinda prefer composing, but I'm not really sure what i like more.  I'd really like to improve my guitar skill though. It's gotten way past the point where a "practice" involves learning that interesting riff i heard once.  I  compose, initially in MIDI format on Guitar Pro.. but i eventually finalise these and experiment and crap on FL Studio, although at school I have to use Sonar which in some ways is better but I'm more used to FL.  The stuff i compose on FL usually ends up being weird experimental electronica pissabourts, whilst the MIDI stuff is more prog-metal stylie. If i had a practical means of recording my guitar I'd be inclined to incorporate that a lot more.

At various times I wanted to be a professional orchestra/chamber ensemble percussionist (I'm classically trained) or a famous rock drummer, but not anymore-- I'm happy just making music for fun.

Quote Have you recorded your own compositions?  Got samples online?

Not compositions exactly; my old improv trio has some stuff on Myspace at /acidophilusrex that we did using chance operations (dice mechanics) to determine the parameters of what we did (tempo, meter, key/mode, section length, etc.)

Quote What instrument(s) do you play ?
Mostly percussion (drumset, vibes/marimba, hand drums, found objects, etc.), voice, and analog synths/live electronics (mostly for real-time manipulation of miked percussives, voice, zither, etc.).  I also play piano, organ, ukulele, guitar, bass, and zither with varying degrees of proficiency.

Quote What instrument(s) do you wish you could play ?
Pipe organ.  I can play combo organ (1-2 manuals) ok, but I would love to be able to rip it up on 2-3 manuals plus three octaves of pedals!  I'm also trying to improve my riq (Arabic tambourine) playing, and my overtone singing is gradually getting better.

Quote Do you play Prog or another type ?
The trio I mentioned above (now defunct, alas) was a mix of improvised space rock, noise, stoner/doom metal, and ambient soundscapes.  Currently I play hand drums & uke in a duo performing kids' songs and Jewish ritual music (yeah it's a weird combo), and I'm trying to put together a "Dungeon Rock" group for jamming and formal compositions that combine early music, prog, and 70s metal with D&D-inspired lyrics.  We'll see what happens... Smile

I think a good percentage of us here are musicians. I play guitar. I can play bass, but I realize that every second spent playing another instrument detracts from my potential prowess at playing guitar. I've been playing for 6 years, but I haven't been part of a successful band yet. I play on my spare time, which is basically all the time! I kind of wish I could play drums, but i'm happy with being a guitarist. I play jazz fusion type stuff and prog...lots of prog! I have heavy classical influences and a mild world influence. I believe that myself as a guitarist is at the very core of my identity.

for those about to prog, we salute you.

1. Mostly at home now, messing around in my spare time (I have spare time?)
2. No compositions
3. Drums - listed the kit under the Drum kit thread...
4. I wish I could play electric guitar like Hackett (in my dreams...)
5. I enjoy messing around mostly with prog, but some good hard rock (like Cream or Zeppelin) is always fun to pound out on the drums.

Thanks for this thread.  It was fun to answer those questions...

keyboards. And hand drums.

I play guitar, and have been doing so far the past 5 years (i'm 19). I used to play saxomophone and i wouldn't mind picking that up again later on down the track, along with Trumpet, Drums, Clarinet, Violin, Voice, Flute, Didgeridoo and a few others i'm sure

I play the guitar in a spanish prog band, SENOGUL. We are starting recording our first record right now, comprised by our own stuff. However, it won´t be available until next year... We have already two demo records, you can listen to some mp3 samples here: www.senogul.tk Tell me what do you think if you take a look . Of course, we also play the classics: Heart of the sunrise, Fith of fith, one extract from Ciclos, Karn Evil 9, Peaches en regalia, Biaxident, etc.

I play Violin, and probably turning out to Electric Violin soon. I also like any percussions (drum, congas, etc...). I can possibly play piano, guitar, base, and all, but I focus on Violin right now. I might also start Cello.

I do not know many songs, as I write most of time. Most stuff I did sound a bit like Can, and they all last for over 10 minutes. Haven't got a real band right now, but well, I just turned out 16 year old, so no hurry.

Guitarist who also plays bass, composes, records.

Released one CD so far, "Tales From The Inflatable Forest", all instrumental symph/fusion under the moniker of The Owl Watches

Here's the website: www.geocities.com/theowlwatches

Samples are on my site but there's also a complete MP3 on Soundclick: http://www.soundclick.com/bands/5/theowlwatchesmusic.htm

I am now recording my follow up and it will be titled "Ghost of A Train", and so far it'll be a bit darker and heavier sounding than "Tales---" drenched in Mellotrons and fuzz-bass!  plus some spooky loops using steam whistles and howling wolf choruses (already did an owl chorus on "Tales--"  )

People are puzzled why I don't dig the Stones, well, I listened to the Stones, I tried, and I tried, and I tried, and--I Can't Get No Satisfaction!

I've been playing piano for 7-8 years. In the last year, I've really gotten into electric keyboard stuff. I have actually come up with three songs, but sorry, they aren't on the net, and if I had the chance, I probably wouldn't put them up anyway.

Is it prog? I'm not sure. That's what I'd like to play, but I probably need more songwriting experience before I can classify it.

Im playing guitar 10 years, bass 3 years and piano 13 years. But mostly i play electric guitar. I have had 5 electric guitars: Epiphone Les Paul Studio, Fender American Standard Stratocaster, Gibson SG 61 reissue, Fender 1979 Stratocaster and now i have only one, but this always was my dream guitar: Gibson Les Paul Custom 1968 reissue (Black Beauty) and this is my most favourite guitar from all i ever played. I want to buy Rickenbacker 4001 bass this year.

I have only one amp too - 1976 Hiwatt DR504. I dont need other, its my dream amp too. I play it through Marshall 1960AX cab with Celestion Greenbacks.

I play trombone, guitar, drums, keyboards, and trumpet. I have my own recording studio in my basement where my band practices (for which I play the drum set). And I'm still in high school!
