Are you a professional musician, semi-pro, wanna-be pro, or an at-home-messing-'round-in-my-spare-time player ?
Have you recorded your own compositions ?  Got samples online ?
What instrument(s) do you play ?
What instrument(s) do you wish you could play ?
Do you play Prog or another type ?

wanna-be pro, and an at-home-messing-'round-in-my-spare-time player

bass, i can noodle around with guitars and piano based instruments but i wouldnt dare claim i can play at all.

at the moment its all for fun, but myself and a few friends are planning to get serious later this year, and with how much time i already devote to music, its going to be pretty serious.

Theremin ! That is Cool

"crappy recording program" = ?
So I know what NOT to use...

I use Cool Edit Pro & Cool Edit 2000.  Very good software.  It was produced by a company called Syntrillium, but I think they got bought out by Adobe.

I have been a pro and semi pro musician for the past 20 years working for prog and non prog bands as both band member and crew. I play a few instuments and have my own studio and I'm currently in a prog band. Wouldn't mind learning the Chapman Stick but right now, I don't have the cash.

I use Pro Tools, Cool Edit Pro (and excellent editor IMO - Utah Man) as my main software.

I am a life-long music student - and have been in pro bands (ie, we got paid...), but mainly have only made music because I have to since age 4 or so. For whatever reason, I cannot leave music alone - I have to write, write about, play, study and listen to it as much as possible

I'm currently working with a work colleague who owns a PC/Sony Acid-based studio, around 11 keyboards, an Antares box and 2 Pod XT Pros.

We're getting better...

I used to play in bands quite a bit in my high school/ college days, but since then it's just been me and the PC. I use Sonar and Cubase as my main software, with Sound Forge for editing, and a buttload of plug-ins. I can also waste amazing amounts of time programming bizarre synth sounds (if I ever get a big old modular synth I may completely vanish from the outside world ).

Well, we've remixed "Grey", which I know you've heard, Reed, so as soon as I get home I'll post a new Yousendit link (they only stay "live" for 7 days, which is why the links in the Collaborator's pages aren't working anymore, James!).

I can't do this from work, because they've blocked http://www.yousendit.com - Yousendit as a P2P loophole . I'm only trying to send MY OWN WORK

Still... I have sent the odd piece of footwear in the past

Looking forward to all those Yousendit links here!

I have some examples of my non-prog stuff http://www.simonwalsh.org/ - here (look under the songs section) but the prog stuff only started again last year and we've only just begun to record the stuff. Rest assured however, I'll be a right royal pain in the arse when they are ready and make some overblown announcement in the er, 'Anouncements' thread.

I will be checking out my esteemed forum colleague's work this very evening.

BTW, do tell if the link doesn't work.

professional messer...

played in bands all through my 20s and early 30s but now just don't have the time and am too damn old...

I still tinker around at home using all the equipment stored up over the years..

mostly...

Cubase, Sound Forge, Recycle, Reason, Fruity Loops to record

plus FM7, B4, Pro53, ImpOscar, Elektrik Piano, M-Tron, Garritan Personal Orchestra, Roland JV1010 with keys of 60s and 70s for synths and sounds

plus

Fender Telecaster, Hohner ST57 and ST59, Epiphone G1275 double neck, Yamaha FG365se 6 string acoustic, Tanglewood 12 string, Vintage AMG1 dobro, some dodgy old mandolin, a dodgy old Cimar (Ibanez) bass.

a bunch of old drum machines, stomp boxes, etc

A Vox AC30 and a Fender Stage 112SE though I use a lot of modelling processors like the Korg AX1000G for guitar sounds.

Plus a bunch of (mostly freeware) effects plug-ins.

And I still haven't finished a damn thing!

Wow! Another one.

I`ve played drums for years as well as faked it on piano (we have two ) , Guitar  (  I have an old Squire Strat I plug in from time to time as well as an Ibanez acoustic). In high school I played tuba and trombone. I`ve played in a few jazz bands as well as a brief stint in a Black Sabbath  cover band. Although I really don`t play that much anymore but If  I`m in a pub that has an open jam I`ll get up. I recently helped some kids get a metal band together which was fun. These kids could actually play.
My wife is an accomplished classical musician and teacher and is currently working on her PHD. She specializes in voice and early music. Her principal instrument is  Sackbut an early version of the trombone. She plays all kinds of other weird instruments as well. You should hear her do Hocus Pocus  but she`ll only do it after a few drinks.
I have two Australian Cattle dogs who also try and play the piano and guitar but no recording contracts are forthcoming.

I have been playing bass for 33 years. I am in a Prog band and we do Dream Theater, Yes, Rush, Liquid Tension etc... covers. Right now we are at a stand still as we are looking for a new guitarist. I play an RBX6JM, Curbow 6, Rickenbacker 4001, and use Gallien Krueger amplification. You are never to old to go out there and rock.

I play the Drums, Guitar, Piano, Bass. I'm trying to learn to play the Harmonica, it's cool!
I wish I could play the Saxophone!

Wow I feel so intimidated by all these experienced musicians. I've been self-teaching myself piano and guitar for over a year now, and my band is making a bassist, so I'm gonna learn a little bass too I guess.

Luckily I found my passion in music and I'm starting to write and compose songs under my influences of prog and jazz. I'm merely a wanna-be in comparison to most of you guys . Though hopefully my band and I will get noticed one day, and I'll have something to show you guys.

But anyways, it's nice to hear that there are actual musicians on this forum. Sometimes I feel like those who listen to prog don't seem to have a true appreciation for it, than those who actually play music. Suffice it to say, prog may not necessarily be the height of musical talent, but nonetheless pretty high. Anyways...yea

I play Bass and Tuba.

I'm alot better on my tuba than on my bass what with having being taught for several years and playing in National Youth Brass Bands at the like.  That said im not too shabby at the bass, am currently trying to play some Rush, finding it a fair challenge though

I guess I'm a wannbe who is now a "I'll never be". That's
OK though. I play bass, keys and guitar. I also program a
mean drum machine. I'm a lousy singer, but I sing anyway.
I've been writing and recording stuff that nobody ever
hears for years.
Most of my gear is really outdated. But I love this
stuff:
Ric 4001 stereo
Fender Jazz Bass (mexican version..Ole!)
Hofner 6 string
Washburn acoustic (cheap)
Epiphone Strat Type (also cheap)
Harmony Hollywood acoustic electric (cheapest)
Ensoniq ESQ-1
Oberheim Matrix-6
Korg DW-8000
Korg poly-six
Crumar Orchestrator
Moog concertmate MG-1
Roland TR 505
Alesis Sr 16
...and all kinds of cheesy processing.
And (Gasp!) I still record on 1/2" Tape

Pro musician, rock not prog!

Guitarist who messes with keyboards. Bass. Drum programmer.

Have been compared with Gary Moore. Not over happy with that as i am a Jeff Beck fan.LOL

Have five gigs this week. Average three a week. i also teach guitar.

Own a 24 track studio where locals come to make demos and finished product. In the middle of an album at the moment for a girl from kent (UK) who sounds a little like Joss Stone.

Played on Danni Minogue's new single... not proud of it but it pays the bills. Such is the life of a session player.Big smile

I've made two solo CDs and one with my duo. Composed a film sountrack a few years ago. Played in loadsa bands over the last 30 years...none of them prog though, mainly rock, blues and Little feat type stuff.

Always busy, always making music... I have to, it keeps the bank manager happy.

i play drums, i used to be some kind of pro... but i became an architect, so i still play from time to time, yes i recorded with 2 bands, the first one PREGO, was a more prog oriented band, however it disbanded and i formed another one a little bit more acid jazz, called MENTE MAESTRA (mastermind in english). My likes are plain GOOD MUSIC, jazz, prog, fusion, classical, rock, whatever that has an escence and groove!!!

I am a drummer (fairly decdent if you ask people that heard me). I can also play the piano (slightly) and i really really want to learn bass. I'm in a band. We're not pro or anywhere close. We try to play the best prog we can. Flammable Titan is the name. Again if you ask people, they'll say we're decent. We contain all kinds of stuff: Piano, organ (when we can use it), drums, all sorts of percussion (got a little shop about 20 mins. away  ) turmpet and guitars of course. We are also trying to blend in sax and other wind instrments. It's coming along nice.

Since I'm still in school, I play at home or with other musicians whenever I can, whenever I have time. I write and records my stuff, but have no samples. I play guitar, saxophone and a little percussion/drums. I wish I would play the keyboard (a lot better) and the violin. I mainly like prog, jazz, fusion and rock.

i am a home recorder, playing bass, guitar, keys, drum machine, and my pc. no band although i have friends who play, and well, and we are creative yet they are too far away (and somewhat apathetic). our music together would be great but as it is i have to give it a go solo. my stuff is ok but im always in need of feedback and ideas out of another's head bc i feel that my music will be better for it....radiohead is 5 geniuses not one(im a bit of a perfectionist...if it isnt as good as the best it isnt good). anyway i have some stuff, mostly electronic, with some live instruments laced in. i dont know how to share it with yu all tho. i would call some of it prog and some are just little studio dalliances to feed creative burnings that had no great inspiration. anyway if any of yu kno how i can share it with yu or if yu would like to hear some let me kno. i send them to my friends thru my I.M.
ps- i listened to the jack straw yu posted and it wasnt too bad man, id like to learn that riff, they are one of my favorite bands, just have grown out of them a little...heard it all so much yu kno?

Im playing guitar 10 years, bass 3 years and piano 13 years. But mostly i play electric guitar. I have had 5 electric guitars: Epiphone Les Paul Studio, Fender American Standard Stratocaster, Gibson SG 61 reissue, Fender 1979 Stratocaster and now i have only one, but this always was my dream guitar: Gibson Les Paul Custom 1968 reissue (Black Beauty) and this is my most favourite guitar from all i ever played. I want to buy Rickenbacker 4001 bass this year.

I have only one amp too - 1976 Hiwatt DR504. I dont need other, its my dream amp too. I play it through Marshall 1960AX cab with Celestion Greenbacks.

I've been playing piano for 7-8 years. In the last year, I've really gotten into electric keyboard stuff. I have actually come up with three songs, but sorry, they aren't on the net, and if I had the chance, I probably wouldn't put them up anyway.

Is it prog? I'm not sure. That's what I'd like to play, but I probably need more songwriting experience before I can classify it.

Guitarist who also plays bass, composes, records.

Released one CD so far, "Tales From The Inflatable Forest", all instrumental symph/fusion under the moniker of The Owl Watches

Here's the website: http://www.geocities.com/theowlwatches - www.geocities.com/theowlwatches

Samples are on my site but there's also a complete MP3 on Soundclick: http://www.soundclick.com/bands/5/theowlwatchesmusic.htm - http://www.soundclick.com/bands/5/theowlwatchesmusic.htm

I am now recording my follow up and it will be titled "Ghost of A Train", and so far it'll be a bit darker and heavier sounding than "Tales---" drenched in Mellotrons and fuzz-bass!  plus some spooky loops using steam whistles and howling wolf choruses (already did an owl chorus on "Tales--"  )

I play Violin, and probably turning out to Electric Violin soon. I also like any percussions (drum, congas, etc...). I can possibly play piano, guitar, base, and all, but I focus on Violin right now. I might also start Cello.

I do not know many songs, as I write most of time. Most stuff I did sound a bit like Can, and they all last for over 10 minutes. Haven't got a real band right now, but well, I just turned out 16 year old, so no hurry.

I play the guitar in a spanish prog band, SENOGUL. We are starting recording our first record right now, comprised by our own stuff. However, it won´t be available until next year... We have already two demo records, you can listen to some mp3 samples here: http://www.senogul.tk - www.senogul.tk  Tell me what do you think if you take a look . Of course, we also play the classics: Heart of the sunrise, Fith of fith, one extract from Ciclos, Karn Evil 9, Peaches en regalia, Biaxident, etc.

I think a good percentage of us here are musicians. I play guitar. I can play bass, but I realize that every second spent playing another instrument detracts from my potential prowess at playing guitar. I've been playing for 6 years, but I haven't been part of a successful band yet. I play on my spare time, which is basically all the time! I kind of wish I could play drums, but i'm happy with being a guitarist. I play jazz fusion type stuff and prog...lots of prog! I have heavy classical influences and a mild world influence. I believe that myself as a guitarist is at the very core of my identity.

At various times I wanted to be a professional orchestra/chamber ensemble percussionist (I'm classically trained) or a famous rock drummer, but not anymore-- I'm happy just making music for fun.

Quote Have you recorded your own compositions?  Got samples online?

Not compositions exactly; my old improv trio has some stuff on Myspace at /acidophilusrex that we did using chance operations (dice mechanics) to determine the parameters of what we did (tempo, meter, key/mode, section length, etc.)

Quote What instrument(s) do you play ?
Mostly percussion (drumset, vibes/marimba, hand drums, found objects, etc.), voice, and analog synths/live electronics (mostly for real-time manipulation of miked percussives, voice, zither, etc.).  I also play piano, organ, ukulele, guitar, bass, and zither with varying degrees of proficiency.

Quote What instrument(s) do you wish you could play ?
Pipe organ.  I can play combo organ (1-2 manuals) ok, but I would love to be able to rip it up on 2-3 manuals plus three octaves of pedals!  I'm also trying to improve my riq (Arabic tambourine) playing, and my overtone singing is gradually getting better.

Quote Do you play Prog or another type ?
The trio I mentioned above (now defunct, alas) was a mix of improvised space rock, noise, stoner/doom metal, and ambient soundscapes.  Currently I play hand drums & uke in a duo performing kids' songs and Jewish ritual music (yeah it's a weird combo), and I'm trying to put together a "Dungeon Rock" group for jamming and formal compositions that combine early music, prog, and 70s metal with D&D-inspired lyrics.  We'll see what happens... Smile

I play guitar, but only for 2 years and even for that time I'm quite sucky. To some level I think I kinda prefer composing, but I'm not really sure what i like more.  I'd really like to improve my guitar skill though. It's gotten way past the point where a "practice" involves learning that interesting riff i heard once.  I  compose, initially in MIDI format on Guitar Pro.. but i eventually finalise these and experiment and crap on FL Studio, although at school I have to use Sonar which in some ways is better but I'm more used to FL.  The stuff i compose on FL usually ends up being weird experimental electronica pissabourts, whilst the MIDI stuff is more prog-metal stylie. If i had a practical means of recording my guitar I'd be inclined to incorporate that a lot more.

I'm a not too bad for an average player kind of guitarist. Whenever people ask me what I can play, song-wise, I always paraphrase an old Johnny Cash quote - I know about a thousand songs, but I can only sing about 12. Unfortunately, no drummers close by, and none in sight. THIS is the best way to get people playing is to announce you have a drummer & a jam space. Still keep plugging away. There a bunch of friends who jam about an hour's drive away. But I kinda screwed myself with them. I started jamming with them when the drummer & bassist were just learning. So the other guitarist was happy to have someone who could actually play. The first few times I went, they spoiled me by letting me just rip, song after song after song, until the night's done. I let that go to my head, started having a few too many beers & when they started bucking down to learning actual songs, I couldn't contain my enthusiasm. They'd have to shush me up, make me turn my sound down & finally let me know through back channels that I was welcome, but to understand that they only had so much patience.
But I got a second chance now, with another group of friends. More loose, more fun with the boys type of thing. This time, I'm applying the lessons learnt. I'm 45 & would dearly love to be in a band.

I've played the guitar for some 5 odd years or so now. I own two American Stratocasters, and my lovely Gibson Les Paul Standard, a guitar which I'm very, very fond of.

My main instrument however, is drums, which I've been professionally taught since I was 8 years old.

I'm active in two local bands (One of which is getting quite a bit of gigs) called Bonfire For Crow, and Greystone Lighthouse.

I'm the drummer in Greystone Lighthouse. We're quite a large band, with me, three guitarists, a bassist, two saxophonists, a keyboardist and a skilled singer. Of course we play prog! Smile It's wonderful to listen to the dual saxophone interplay that pops up in the odd jams. Unfortunately, I've got no recordings because we've yet to talk about that sort of stuff. We play a lot of gigs. Right now we're not very busy however...

I play the guitar in Bonfire For Crow, which is more an average jamband. We've played a couple of gigs, most notably one where we did a cover of All Along The Watchtower which lasted for 25+ minutes or so. By the end of it, we'd all gone barking mad LOL

I play the guitar of course my main influences are Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Yes and Jimi Hendrix. I like progressive rock, yes I think it is the best rock music out there. It has created some of the most  influential albums ever like Sgt Pepper and The Wall.  I like progressive rock with good melodies which is something I want to accomplish. Only a few bands have mastered that concept. Just started playing out. Not using this forum to promote myself though. Im just interested in talking about the ones who started progressive rock like the Beatles, Pink Floyd and Zappa.

I play 6-string, bass, keyboards, drums, and I sing.  I really just kinda of mess around in my basement, I have some mid-range analog recording devices (not a big fan of digital). I record my own stuff, by pulling a Tom Scholz (in which a record a guitar track, for example, and then a bass track and then a drum track, by myself). I mostly play a progressive/arena rock mix, kind of like Rush or Kansas.

I also play in like a quad, with me playing lead guitar and vocals, and my friends playing drums and bass. We have a classic metal sound with classical influences.

I've been playing the trumpet of about ten years now, and the piano for even longer. I've also been playing around with medieval instruments which are great fun, partly because they are from an age before tuning was invented.

At the moment, I'm playing a mix of classical and jazz/big band trumpet in various groups. On the piano I'm mostly doing classical stuff with a bit of jazz. I've been experimenting with keyboards, specifically organs and synths for a couple of years now. Sadly, my keyboards won't fit in my room at uni, so I've been doing a lot of messing around on my laptop with Sibelius and I've just discovered Arturia's demos.

I do a fair bit of singing as well.

I dabble from time to time on a cheap electric guitar and an old Yamaha keyboard, mostly for trying to get strange sounds out of them. But my true forte is composing music on a computer. I have released five albums, first on mp3.com, and now on my own label (cafepress.com makes the CDs). I treat it more as a hobby than a job, and so I don't actively advertise my stuff. It's mostly prog rock, maybe a little electronic pop in places.

It's called Superluminal Pachyderm and you can hear some of it here:
http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default.cfm?bandID=293277&content=music - http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default.cfm?bandID=293277&content=music

So, I'm more of a composer than a musician.

I play guitar, bass, keyboard, flute, and some percussion. I've been playing guitar and bass for about two years. I've been playing drums for around a year and six months. I've been playing flute and keyboard since I was seven. I also know how to read sheet music and I know music theory.

I play in two bands. One is a melodic hard rock type band called Audacity and my other band is a folk metal (it does exist) band called Empire. I compose material for both of the bands I am in. Sadly, I don't have any material to present to you at the moment, but once I am able to record material for either band I'm in I'll try and post it on here. I also try to record stuff on my own, but from my experience, I realized it's actually kind of a pain to record everything on your own...

Lets go back to the early 80s. I was first in a band when I was at school. We were called Distance and were heavily influenced by Floyd, Hawkwind and Rush but hampered by not having decent instruments (the drummer's kit was a Huntley & Palmers biscuit tin for a snare and a plastic bucket for a kick/tom) although I soon persuaded my mum to by me an electric guitar - a Westone Thunder 1A. The drummer and bass player went on to play for an anarcho punk band and toured the world. The other guitarist wanted to become a teacher of Religious Education (as an atheist he thought he was as well qualified as anyone else) but became a newspaper editor instead. He still plays guitar and often annoys me that he's so good at fingerstyle playing but is happy just to play at home.

My next band was a ramshackle psychedelic/garage/punk/noise act called Games for May. We played a gig in a friends house (stopped by the Police) and another at a local pub with a few friends. That went well so we practiced every Sunday and drank lots of tea and that was that really.

Next was The Schoolhouse. We were influenced by grunge and indie music. The best comment we got was "They'd be OK if they could tune their guitars" - I used a lot of sus 2 chords for some reason.

After that I played guitar in Rockets Revenge, drum machine powered indie popsters. The bass player was my girlfriend, so when we split up it was a bit tense in the band. Soon after that the band split too.

I started playing bass and joined a band called Bib. We invented Britpop but nobody knows it. The singer left to go to college so that fell apart.

The bass player from The Schoolhouse was now playing guitar in a band called Sawyer. When their bassist left, I joined. Sawyer mutated from a grungey noise-rock monster into something more controlled. A little later, the guitarist from Bib joined too. We recorded an album called On the Seven (released on Human Condition Records of Edinburgh) and played a few gigs. We rocked! Occasionally in 5/4! Then the driving force (he was the only one with either a car or a driving licence) left to work in London and now plays guitar for the heaviest band in the world, Part Chimp. Sawyer came to a shuddering halt.

Around this time I became more interested in home recording and recorded an album of progressive electronic/Krautrock music which I gave to friends one Christmas. I keep meaning to see about making it available to the world at large but...

Then my brother called me up. He'd put together a horrorpunk band who were due to play their first gig in a few days time but their guitarist had left. A couple of days of intensive practice and the gig went well. After a few changes of personnel and name we became a three piece called 13 Tombs. When the bass player decided he couldn't give the commitment needed, my brother and I decided to continue as a duo. We've played quite a few gigs now, including the Whitby Gothic Weekend, and have the obligatory MySpace site.

As well as all of the above, I've done a fair few "one offs", often at short notice. Hardcore punk, thrash, country, pop, Johnny Cash... Sometimes I've even been paid!
