^ Thanks. Strange policy of Youtube... Is it because there are no explicit lyrics, no parental advisory needed, that they block it for adults? I was also thinking of posting some King Missile, so let's do a YT test, see if this passes: King Missile - The President (it was actually written as an homage to G.W. Bush, but I think it's also/more applicable to the present president of the US of A., and it is less than 4 mins.): (test, 1, 2...) |

The Nits "In The Dutch Mountains" video has also been labeled "Content made for kids" and cannot be saved to a YouTube playlist. I found another longer clip of the same video with about 45 seconds of non-song intro, so I added that instead.

This is going to be a very rich poll, again. Great! And there is so many to choose from. I was thinking of The Kinks, Fischer-Z, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, and many others, but you all know them already, so I'm picking something from my home and adoptive countries (don't worry, they all sing in English). In chronological order... Polder-music from the Netherlands (below sea level). It was a big hit with us in 1987, and not only in the Low Countries, so you may have heard it before: The Nits - In the Dutch Mountains : From France, Yann Tiersen, a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who is not a very good singer. You may know him through his film music (think of Amélie Poulain...). For this song from 2005 he invited Stuart Staples (indeed, from Tindersticks fame), to do the singing : Yann Tiersen - A Secret Place: Another French artist, who started as a singer in the London jazz scene, and made her first album in France in 2015. But don't expect jazz, it's more electro pop/rock: Jeanne Added - Look at Them: |

My impressions: Beirut is beautiful (and the female singer is wonderful, is it possible to marry her?). It can aspire to my podium. The song written by Dag is a sophysticated song... but maybe it is especially a commercial cocktail lunge song. I see more form than substance. Ah, Leah, as you said, is a pleasent solid rock. Bot Solid Rock by Dire Straits is better .... So, if I had to choose, I'd choose Beirut ... or better, I would choose Yasmine Hamdan! Edited by jamesbaldwin - September 03 2020 at 18:59 |

Great theme (and thanks to George for thinking of it and expanding the allowable length, or was that shortening the allowable length? )! Short songs rather than epics. Gotta get the point across quickly, and was indeed part of the old "hit" formula. Here are my notes for Page One, the first few out of the box.
George:
Yasmin Hamdan “Beirut” Haunting song and imagery. More modern than most Middle Eastern-y music
I listen to, but every bit as compelling.
Dag “Righteous (City Pain)” Talk about a shift in feel. What a great voice this lead singer has! Haven’t really heard anything like this in a
while, refreshing! Donnie Iris “Ah
Leah” That was fun, I don’t recall
hearing it from then, but I would have been newly in Santa Cruz with no TV and
listened to mostly the college station.
But it does capture a lot of what what the sound of the day then.
Logan: Susan Christie “Paint A Lady” Pretty psych-folk. Never heard this one, love the warbly guitars and the imagery. Produced with a really retro sound. Gary Numan “I Die, You Die” Gary Numan sticking with his signature style. Not really a fan of the robotic sound. CocoRosie “Lemonade” Interesting dark sound. Video makes me think of “Gormenghast,” (on the third book of the trilogy, second time around). I find the vocals distracting, I don’t know if they always sound this way, or if it was affected for this tune. I like the video more than the piece, because of the vocals. But I find the chorus kind of enchanting….it may grow on me, who knows? Cristi: Simon & Garfunkel “Kathy’s Song,” One of my favourite LPs of all time. I so enjoyed seeing them live in Nashville, local Phil Everly came up and sang with them also. Art hit that high, sustained note in “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” perfectly, even though this was in the 90’s. The Child “Little Light” Lovely, heavy, slow-moving psych! Never heard this one before. Will certainly go back for another listen. Morten Harket “Burn Money Burn” Definitely enjoyable, rock-with-synths, but not as light as the A-ha smash hit. I really prefer his voice in this more mid-range. Joey Tempest “Sometimes” Solid rock vocalist and well-crafted song here. New Model Army “Lights Go Out” Hard rock with a punk edge to it. Not as fond of the vocal style, but it’s a pretty rocking tune. Lyrics are thoughtful. Lewian: Pinback “Devil You Know” Interesting repeating bass lines, nice change-ups, with this alt-rock sort of band. Liked the chorus and it’s certainly catchy. Caparezza “Teste-Di-Modi” This kind of thing is just not for me, although the video is amusing. Greg: The New Seekers “Look What They’ve Done To My Song Ma” I remember this version, as well as the original by Melanie. I like both versions, really. Johnny Cash “A Boy Named Sue” Great, great, performer/artist, of course I know this one. He was also so supportive of others, his tv variety show was just fantastic. No wonder that this song was a hit all over the place. The Kinks “Dedicated Follower of Fashion” Another familiar to me, BIG Kinks fan from their beginning. No one else quite like them. I prophesy disaster: Devo “Shrivel Up” Princes of New Wave, I enjoy their sarcasm, but it’s not my favourite listening style. Morgan Delt “Tropicana” Here we have some kind of psych-tinged edgy music. Not sure what I think of it yet. Van Halen “Atomic Punk” I think I’ve said, not a Van Halen fan much. I think DLR is a great showman, but just not my kind of music. The Orb “Toxygene” Electronic music here, not a genre I necessarily enjoy, but some has surprised me. Not this one, though. Edwyn Collins “A Girl Like You” I remember this one and quite enjoyed it at the time, a KROQ staple. Love the fuzz guitar riff, it also got a lot of club play in LA at the time. |

My first nomination:
1) Morphine: Honey White. Morphine are in my opinion one of the best bands of the 90s. They established a new sound, a new mood, a new way of arranging songs with just three instruments plus the voice, and what's essential, without the guitars and keyboards. A revolution. Their songs are almost all short, less than 4 minutes long. So I am spoiled for choice, I am very undecided on which to choose, but having to choose, here is this splendid rock and roll. Alternative track: 2) Afterhours: Male di miele. (Evil of Honey) Afterhours are one of the most famous Italian underground rock bands, which in recent years has become less wild, less alternative but in the first records expressed a very raw and inspired Italian indie-rock. This is one of their best short songs. Another alternative track: 3) Bruce Springsteen: Candy's Room. This song, apart from the Beatles and Simon and Garfunkel, is the best short rock song I've heard as a teenager. And even now I consider it an absolute masterpiece, one of the most beautiful three-minute shorter rock songs in rock history. - It starts as a song by a folk singer-songwriter, voice and piano, melodic, then - changes rhythm, becomes powerful rock, and finally has an amazing guitar solo with a dazzling rhythm, and - then ends with an almost punk enthusiasm (we are in 1978). I remind everyone that Springsteen fans, like myself, often consider the album containing this song, Darkness on the Edge of Town, to be the the best of the Boss. Another much loved album by Bruce fans is Nebraska, an acoustic folk album, which is a home-recorded demo with a 4-track recorder where Bruce plays every instrument. Prog fans usually prefer The Wild, The Innocent and the E Street Shuffle, which has longer songs, or Born To Run, which is often considered his best album. Here, keep these 4 names in mind: in my opinion they are his best 4 albums. Enjoy! PS Have you noticed? My holidays are over, and I'm back to work!

nice... but like last time.. I like making my own themes that fit the OP's theme..
so.. I'm going 3 minute and less... and the best part.... all featuring that most favorite album of mine.. (even more than the bassoon haha) the mighty banjo.. as two of my top 10 alltime favorite songs figure it prominently.. one is too long to have here.. the other .. well... the oughts... the 90's the 80's (what a much overlooked album btw) then there is this one.. which will be my poll selection.. yeah we can yap about songs that would have better if they had shortened it.. but what about those songs so good.. they can say in 2 minutes what bands can not say in 10 minutes or more.. a Mick top 10 alltime favorite song.. while I am most proud of my winning performance of Aretha in my first Karaoke contest (oh what a war story that was x18) .. my proudest singing moment was nailing this in a contest and getting a Standing O... I can do Annie ... oh yes I can... and the 60's.. nope ... too long.. so no Bluebird.. a top 3 alltime favorite song of mine.. the banjo took that song into another musical and melancholic dimension... but I'll sub it with a mere top 20 alltime fav.. A few of the songs I would have liked to suggest for this round have already been used in previous polls, and I'd rather avoid duplicating entries when there is so much music to choose from. Here's a couple of songs that have something in common besides their short running time - they involve very few instruments (or none at all). First off, a song by The Creatures - husband-and-wife (at the time) pair Siouxsie and Budgie - drums and vocals, nothing else: Second song is by Irish choral ensemble Anúna (a great favourite of mine). The song was originally written by Elvis Costello and Bill Frisell, who is in the database, so there is a slight prog connection: |

I'm just going to throw up a couple of quickies because I just can't resist:
Ambrosia - "Kid No More" Beck - "Girl" The Avett Brothers - "Swept Away" EDIT: I realized later that the Ambrosia track above breaks the rules in that they are in the Archives. Sorry about that. In replacement, I am posting a track from one of my favorite bands The Low Anthem. This lovely song and video is what made me fall in love with this band, and the album it comes off of "Oh My God, Charlie Darwin" is also quite amazing. It probably won't be the last time I post something from this amazing band. This one is called "To Ohio". Edited by TCat - September 03 2020 at 18:32 |

I'm beginning to get annoyed with YouTube being selective about who can play their videos. Actually, that isn't true... I've been annoyed with YouTube for a long time.

No, I know how to behave in the restaurant now, I don't tear at the meat with my hands. If I've become a man of the world somehow, that's not necessarily to say I'm a worldly man.

Your one didn't play for me. However, I have that album and therefore know that version of the track, and would've chosen it if I'd seen it (and if it played for me). |
