Dream Theater - Metropolis, Pt. 2 I expected this to be an absolute cheese-fest the whole way through, but was pleasantly surprised by it. I'll definitely be revisiting this one, even if some parts did sound a bit much like DragonForce.
VDGG - Still Life I definitely wasn't won over by this one, but it was certainly a lot easier for me to listen to than most other Peter Hammill recordings. Definitely an album I'll listen to again, but doesn't beat out H To He as my top Van der Graaf pick. Campo Di Marte - Campo Di Marte This album is AWESOME. Has just about every aspect I like about RPI in little doses; some soft parts, some romance, some heavy riffing, some rocking out. Very, very good. Faun - Eden An absolutely gorgeous, well-crafted folk album. This is quality music, very clean and well-produced, but certainly not lacking in spirit. One of the best modern finds I've had in a while!

May just be the intense yodeling vocal attributes of one Mr Stratos, but yeah as you said it's been a while since you last heard it. For some it takes some getting used to - others never get past those mad vocals...as for myself? I was hooked from the get-go

I have Arbeit Macht Frei on my iPod, but when I get there I will have access to their whole discography via my disc. And will have some really good stereo speakers. Anyway, I am reading the reviews on it at the moment to perhaps get a taste of what to expect and set a mindset if you will. First time I've listened to one piece, a long while ago, I was not impressed, something really turned me off. But I can't even remember what. Anyway, carte blanche and I hope to become a huge fan of the band. |

Area is most definitely something to look forward to
Start out chronologically and see what's what. Every album featuring Demetrio Stratos is quite simply stunning and absurdly unique. No other band sounds even remotely close to Area...and that is actually quite the feat in itself. |

Dun - Eros Along with Weidorje's lone album, Eskaton's 4 Visions, Archaia's self-titled, Eider Stellaire's first offering, and maybe Shubb Niggurath's debut, this is considered one of the finest classic non-Magma zeuhl albums. However, out of the ones I've just named, it's my least favorite one. Maybe it's hard to get into for me. But, as for now, I don't find it to have qualities that I appreciate and enjoy in zeuhl. I know it's good, but it's just not appealing for me personally.
Klaus Schulze - Cyborg Probably my favorite of Klaus' early works. I was probably not in the right mood for it today, but still managed to kind of appreciate it. I think the cello-like sound combined with those slowly evolving soundscapes, as it was called, gives quite eeire results, sort of like Univers Zero or Art Zoyd. But it has that great electronic integrity. Zao - Kawana Continuing my Zao listenings with their last album. Albeit the least zeuhly, it is probably my favorite. It takes everything I liked about their previous albums - technical perfection, complex arrangements, original fusion compositions. Amazing! Now if we just moved a little more zeuhl in here! Cluster & Eno - Cluster & Eno Pretty refreshing. Even a person that is not into electronic music would recognize that sauce made by Cluster and Brian Eno is very different from what Berlin School has been producing at that time. It's a lot more "weeeeeeeeeelaweeeeeeeeeeleeeeeeeseeeeee" than "whirli-tirli-whirli-tirli" or "zhuuuushhhhhheeeeeeeeekhhhhh" like Klaus Scchulze or Tangerine Dream, if that makes any sense... It's hard to describe. At any rate, it' a great record! Nucleus - Elastic Rock Nucleus might become my new favorite thing. I really started loving this album today. Of course, I was baptised in the Canterbury waters, so it seems a wee too sterile to me, but it has most of the things I like about Canterbury (and Zao for that matter), with an exception of breakng free from improv. Very good! I'm flying to London tomorrow, I will visit loads of record stores (about 7 on my list). I will have access to internet and my laptop there, so I will check in here when I find time to. Taking a lot of music with me and my plan is to discover and start loving the band Area, as I thoughtt they might be up my alley. |

I strongly recommend Night Time and the selftitled debut...but seeing as you're going to a gig of theirs it is probably best if you check out their latter day material as they've coveret sooooooo much sonic ground since their post punk beginnings it literally boggles the mind. Try out the other selftitled album from 2003 as well...and maybe their most recent album Pylon? Not sure since I haven't heard it

Today:
Eric Dolphy - Out to Lunch (fantastic jazz record and fully deserving of it's legendary rep.) Killing Joke - Night Time (the 80s at their best (almost that is)) Miles Davis - On the Corner (Miles goes funk and absolutely nails it!) Xploding Plastix - Amateur Girlfriends Go Proskirt Agents (electronic laden nu-jazz that pushes all the right buttons for me) Secret Chiefs 3 - Perichoresis (the middle east joins forces with an avantguarde whirlwind and conjurs up something wholly unique.) Boredoms - Vision Creation Newsun (avantkraut toddler escapism in diapers and straightjacket. It works though.) Brian Ellis Group - Escondido Sessions (wham bam thank you mam...with added sax.) Goat - World Music (one of the finest psych albums of recent times reminiscent of Amon Düül ll's classic years.) |

I know that sensation! I once span this with a full-on hangover and it did nothing but add to the tiny men doing stomp sessions in my frontal lobe. Nice Ash Ra Tempel pick btw. I think it often gets overlooked for the two albums leading up to it, which is a damn shame. I love it for it's electronic sways - the way Göttsching fumbles his way into these beautiful bobbing pulses that he would go on to employ in most of his subsequent career. This is genesis though and as a consequence of that feels wonderfully naive - a trade I adore in most experimental music. |

Zao - Shekina Although these Zao albums are respectivelly getting a lot less zeuhly and more fusion-oriented, therefore, at times, less original-sounding, they are getting much better in my opinion. This one was really good! It takes off where the previous album left. At times, the party gets a bit Canterburian even. Tight musicianship, intricate arrangements, well-thought compositions - that's what I love.
Tangerine Dream - Sorcerers This is very good. This is as good as their most acclaimed studio albums, in my mind. Although I have not watched the film Sorcerers, I've read the main plot, and with only that in mind, I feel how well their music corresponds with the theme. What I particularly like about this one and other TD albums in general is how they always come up with innovative sequencer lines or build great, innovative textures around less-innovative lines. Peter Frohmader/Nekropolis - Cultes Des Goules, The Ballet of Death Sorry, everyone, one more Peter Frohmader album. This one was different from its predecessors, yet no less enjoyable. We can hear Frohmader experimenting with (then fresh and new) drum machines, which despite sounding just a bit dated, corespond with slowly moving soundscapes. Less dark, still phenomenal. Recommended! Marion Brown - Afternoon of Georgia Faun Although free jazz stands in opposition to a good most of musical ideas I believe in, it is surprisingly close to my heart and that of many of my musical idols, to whose ideas, free jazz theoretically also stood in opposition to (that's one hell of a sentence). This is free jazz of the highest order. It really isn't to heavy on your thoughts, making it a bit more open to interpretation and giving the listener space for contemplation. Awesome! And it has Chick Corea and Anthony Braxton on it! Arachnoid - Arachnoid I've been away from symphonic prog recently, so when I saw this one had that label on it, plus it was very zeuhl-infused, I thought I would give it a listen. I was not disappointed by any means, but was not blown away or satisfied, either. These guys seem to put too much of effort on being dark, introducing evil harmonies etc., therefore at times sounding a bit phoney and unnatural. Still, a pretty good album and it had some really good moments. Michael Hoenig -Departure From the Northern Wasteland I enjoyed this album immensly when I've first listened to it. This time, that I was already familiar with it, more or less, I was not blown away once more. Still, I love this album and think it's one of the best on its shelf (which is top shelf). In the other thread, I've read that Hoenig had every cable of his taped with a different color and was a perfectionist - that is very detectable on here. Sinoia Caves - Beyond the Black Rainbow OST Some modern music! This is so excellent! And it makes me smile that there are still young artists who are still expanding borders of the Berlin School in keeping with its tradtitions. Furthermore, these guys have a very good sound - smooth, analog, I'm sure they use vintage equipment (they even have some pics on their Facebook page). This is such a good album, I can't believe it. Sam, have you listened to it? You will probably like it very much. "1966 - Let The New Age Of Enlightenment Begin" is so refreshing! This was my day. Sorry for that lengthy post, I can never seem to cut the chase when discussing things I like. |

^LegEnd has not fully charmed you yet? No worries, I didn't like it at first and now it's one of my favorites of all time. Good move to buy it, I betcha you will love it with all your heart someday. I'd say that the compositional skill and musicianship is right up there with your beloved Bubu.
