You are entitled (a) to your opinion and (b) not to take any grief for your opinion. I used to think CTTE was the best epic ever and while I still think it's brilliant, I think Gates of Delirium is better. Also three of the four Tales songs and even arguably Awaken. Now that one Micky is going to give me hell for.

Huge fan, but never got many others' reverence for VDGG's Godbluff. Just a jazzed up version and nothing more.

Yes - And You and I Genesis - The Battle of Epping Forest & I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe) Renaissance - Song of Sheherazade
Yes - Fragile & The Yes Album Rush - A Farewell to Kings (Xanadu and Cygnus X-1 are very good, but the other songs...) Marillion - Misplaced Childhood (my least favorite from the Fish-era, never understood why this album was considered their 80's best) IQ - Dark Matter Mike Oldfield - Ommadawn (Part 1 is good) Tangerine Dream - Pergamon & Logos (again, Part 1 is good) Iron Maiden - Powerslave (half-good and not that progressive, their 2 next albums are much better and more complex) Grobschnitt - Rockpommel's Land

As far as songs that are well regarded but I plain dislike:
ELP - Lucky Man King Crimson - everything from "Discipline" Pink Floyd - Echoes (perhaps the worst offender of them all) Yes - Long Distance Runaround |
I thought dr prog was the one and only forum member who had the patent on such deviant and outrageous statements, but you surpassed him easily . However, I agree for at least 80% about Discipline.

I wouldn't consider Awaken overrated... it isn't like many (rightfully so) put it on the same level as the truely great Yessongs. I suppose it was OK.. and that is about what it was. How can you love Floyd though and consider Echoes boring ass... that is like like loving Priest and thinking Sinner is too... boring... Echoes IS Floyd. How can you love one and not the other.

CTTE, Echoes and Shine on you crazy diamond are highly overrated by prog fans. There is not enough idea and melody to make these songs that long. There is just lots of atmospheric rubbish which doesnt do me anything but bore to half death. (Ok ok.. half of the shine on is actually beautiful. But there is still the other half)

Overrated = A classic I dislike / don't get Underrated = An obscurity I like
So basically meaningless words produced to inflame the opposition

With those criteria half the music on PA is overrated and the other half underrated.

Overrated: PF - The Wall Genesis - Supper ... JTull - TAAB. It's too lenghty for lenght sake. I prefer Songs From the Woods.
I don't listen much to any of King Crimson albums but they still deserve high rating.

Floyd (with or without Syd), except for the second half of The Wall The whole Trilogy album by ELP Tom Sawyer by Rush The CTTE and Fragile albums by Yes The Battle of Epping Forest by Genesis The Court of the Crimson King album by KC Everything ever by Jethro Tull minus A Passion Play Basically any older group's stuff I have a hard time understanding why they get the praise they do. Maybe it's over-romanticizing prog "glory days" or something. And You And I will always and forever be a bland song to me, but some people seem to go crazy over it. There's really nothing all that great about it, at least in my opinion. No emotion comes across to me, and it's not particularly musically interesting. |
Talk about hard to please. And thanks for mentioning The Wall because all of it is overrated.

Please, don't slap me with a cold fish! Here's my answer: Ummagumma and Atom Heart Mother are abysmal as a whole. Really, really BAD albums. Next time the plumber comes, I will record the sounds he makes while fixing the kitchen sink and release it as a Pink Floyd record. Fanboys will love the thing!

I remember those days when Long Distance Runaround was my favourite Yes song bar-none. How the times have changed. As for overrated songs, here's my list from ten of the big names:
Pink Floyd: God bless, I don't know on this one. Maybe Breathe? Genesis: One For The Vine Yes: Awaken King Crimson: Lizard Jethro Tull: A Passion Play ELP: Tarkus VdGG: Childlike Faith In Childhood's End Gentle Giant: Funny Ways Camel: Anything from The Snow Goose Rush: Cygnus X-1

I was thinking the other day that if I never hear Long Distance Runaround again I'd be okay with that. I don't dislike it, I've just heard it enough for one lifetime. Gates of Delirium overrated? Seriously? Go back and listen to it again.
