I totally agree with what you stated. I gave Works vol 1 a 4 stars review. Moreover , trimmed down to a 50 minute record comprised of  :Keith's side -  ELP side and a song from Carl's and Greg's side it would be a 5 star one. But then , it's ELP so you gotta take into account all the flak the band recieves.
 
 
Another , album that is vastly underrated in my opinion is St Anger from Metallica. It's great fun and a return to metal since the dreadful 90's. This record has a 1.63 rating (including my 4 stars review as a prog reviewer)

Agree with pretty much everything here but would insist that Lake be held to account for a frankly wretched 20 minutes of anyone's time (apart from Hallowed Be Thy Name) Greg really let the side down here. I do like Carl's portion yet could never get overly enthusiastic about the big band arrangement of Tank. But yeah, Works Vol 1 has stood the test of time and just suffers 'false memory syndrome' amongst it's most virulent detractors. Like Topographic Oceans, it's become one of Prog's 'standard issue' scapegoats.

In PA terms the one that rankles with me is ELP - Works Volume One. Only scrapes just above two stars. I have a theory that this is the ELP album that most like to take out their pent up anger on about ELP's 'bombastic' approach in general. However it is far from their most bombastic album so there is some irony in this.

Yes it's not majestic like Per Un Amico but it's still a great album, with high quality music.

Probably both records by Watchtower , I mean this is the band that invented progressive metal and have few reviews.

I loved ELPowell.  The Score, The Miracle, Touch and Go and their interpretation of Mars were all great.

For me, I'd have to say (wearing my bullet proof vest of course) Abacab.  I don't think it's half as bad as its critics say it is.  I think the title track, Me and Sarah Jane, Dodo/Lurker are all great Genesis songs, and even the poppier stuff on it is fairly quality pop.  Another one that I think is really underrated is 90125.

I guess Lizard by King Crimson. Yes, I know that a lot of people on this site like this album, but a lot of web reviewers (including Mark Prindle, John McFerrin, George Starostin, Evan Lublinski) consider it terrible. In fact, I bought it just because they said it was bad, and after the last chords of "Big Top" faded out, I was left dumbfounded, asking myself "Am I listening to the same record that they were describing?"

       Not many people know it even exists, and it is not listed anywhere in PA, except in my posts about it!
          Since it's initial release on lp in Germany in October of 1977, it has never been re-issued on any format, and is hard as sin to find.

                    It happens to be my favorite album.
