Just as Love Beach, it's not an extraordinary album but I think it worths listening. Or A Passion Play, I think it's a masterpiece! The greatest masterpiece I heard! I guess Relayer too is underrated, it's my favorite Yes album (altough the mastering isn't quite good). Any others?

Sarcasm. Wink Dude, with all due respect, all those albums who listed are quite revered and celebrated 70's Classic Prog Rock albums. Though some may be so called "controversial", most of the guys on this site, including me, worship those albums.

Dowsing Anemone with Copper Tongue.  It's only got a 3.66 on here, and while I know that's not a low score at all, I feel like it epitomizes a dark realm of modern progressive sounds that aren't enough celebrated enough.

Roger Taylor's 'Happiness?" and 'Electric Fire" remains widely unknown, but they are amongst the greatest albums I've ever heard (though I believe that Roger Taylor could easily be added on the archives in crossover or at least prog-related section, he's not on the archives yet).

Uriah Heep's "Wonderworld". A very solid heavy prog album and one of the best albums by Uriah Heep. It's sad to see it with relatively low rating while much less entertaining and original "The Magician's Birthday" is purely over-rated.

"Pablo Honey" by Radiohead. It's not that bad!!!

"The Book of Taliesyn" by Deep Purple. This is my favourite album from this band. It deserves a higher rating here.

Helmut Koellen-You Won't See Me

Not many people know it even exists, and it is not listed anywhere in PA, except in my posts about it!
Since it's initial release on lp in Germany in October of 1977, it has never been re-issued on any format, and is hard as sin to find.

It happens to be my favorite album.

I guess Lizard by King Crimson. Yes, I know that a lot of people on this site like this album, but a lot of web reviewers (including Mark Prindle, John McFerrin, George Starostin, Evan Lublinski) consider it terrible. In fact, I bought it just because they said it was bad, and after the last chords of "Big Top" faded out, I was left dumbfounded, asking myself "Am I listening to the same record that they were describing?"

I loved ELPowell.  The Score, The Miracle, Touch and Go and their interpretation of Mars were all great.

For me, I'd have to say (wearing my bullet proof vest of course) Abacab.  I don't think it's half as bad as its critics say it is.  I think the title track, Me and Sarah Jane, Dodo/Lurker are all great Genesis songs, and even the poppier stuff on it is fairly quality pop.  Another one that I think is really underrated is 90125.

In PA terms the one that rankles with me is ELP - Works Volume One. Only scrapes just above two stars. I have a theory that this is the ELP album that most like to take out their pent up anger on about ELP's 'bombastic' approach in general. However it is far from their most bombastic album so there is some irony in this.
Pirates is just about the most perfect symphionic prog track I've ever heard. Fanfare For The Common Man is totally unique. OK there is a load of solo music but mostly its of a very high standard. Keith Emerson's piano concerto is much praised and been performed by orchestras around the world. The Lake and Sinfield songs may not be too everyone's taste I understand but they are still interesting.Palmer's side features some strong jazz rock fusion stuff and a mighty version of Tank.
Overall it should be rating at least 3 stars imho. ELP's crash and burn really happened after this although the negative publicity springing from the orchestral tour probably precipated it. The album was still decent though.

Agree with pretty much everything here but would insist that Lake be held to account for a frankly wretched 20 minutes of anyone's time (apart from Hallowed Be Thy Name) Greg really let the side down here. I do like Carl's portion yet could never get overly enthusiastic about the big band arrangement of Tank. But yeah, Works Vol 1 has stood the test of time and just suffers 'false memory syndrome' amongst it's most virulent detractors. Like Topographic Oceans, it's become one of Prog's 'standard issue' scapegoats.

I totally agree with what you stated. I gave Works vol 1 a 4 stars review. Moreover , trimmed down to a 50 minute record comprised of  :Keith's side -  ELP side and a song from Carl's and Greg's side it would be a 5 star one. But then , it's ELP so you gotta take into account all the flak the band recieves.

Another , album that is vastly underrated in my opinion is St Anger from Metallica. It's great fun and a return to metal since the dreadful 90's. This record has a 1.63 rating (including my 4 stars review as a prog reviewer)

For sure not the most underrated album, but i enjoy Camel's Breathless more than Rain Dances or The Snow Goose.

Echoes is one of their best songs ever, plus the album is riddled with catchy melodies and vocal lines.

Aye aye! I love Fripp's droning notes and especially "Big Top". Almost 80% of the album is good IMO. Those guys might as well just give up on reviewing music.

Certainly, the pop turn begins here and the tracks get a bit shorter(some proggers will automatically deduct points for that) and less complex. But I would say though the turn toward pop has begun, they certainly haven't arrived yet.  I just saw that AllMusic gives it a mere 2 stars. The reviewer says it is "imbalanced" and actually calls Giant For A Day more consistent.

I don't like how people use ''understand'' so often when they talk about music. It is a proper term for many things but not for everything. The Missing Piece is a easy album to understand. Bitches Brew ain't easy to understand but many bands in progressive rock make easily understandable albums.

there are too many albums that deserved better:

Cromwell - Burning Banners - 1997
Deja-Vu - Between The Leaves (1976)
Minotaurus - Fly Away (1978)
Pax Romana - Trace of Light - 2005
Airbag - Identity -2009
Twelfth Night - Fact And Fiction - 1982
Richard Wright - Broken China 1996
anything by Landberk

anything by Poverty's No Crime
the two albums of the progressive metal band Tunnelvision (from Finland)
Sieges Even - criminally underrated in my humble opinion
Conception - anything by them, great progressive metal

that's all for now, I'll be back...Smile

I was just thinking this today.  I've listened to it twice so far (just bought it), and it's really really nice.  Might end up being my favorite PFM album before long.

I'm glad you like it!!

My favorite track is Meridiani, phenomenal guitar by Mussida and some killer bass line by Djivas in the second part. Clap Clap

Jet Lag is one of my favorite of PFM's-great record. Also love Chocolate Kings, which sometimes gets a bum rap
Chocolate Kings is near perfect until the last track. Out Of The Roundabout is my favourite PFM track and Harlequin not that far behind. Paper Charms starts nicely but has too much sub Roger Chapman style vocal warblings for my liking.

Agreed!!

I rank Control and Resistance higher than most progmetal albums, it's absolutely genius. Wonder where Cynic got their 'unique' fusionmetal style from then look no further. Dream Theater and Fates Warning seems to have get all the credit on the progmetal genre which is unfair, I hope Watchtower's two albums get's far more attention over the next years (if the majority can stomach Teccio's voice that is!).

Also, Psychotic Waltz rarely get's mentioned here either but their two first albums are masterworks of the genre and remains unique to this day. Like WT they definitely deserve more attention, their albums are rated highly though. Approve

Last, Vauxdvihl's 'Dimension Logic'. Check it out, metal fan or not!

Fruupp - Modern Masquerades. Sure, Fruupp worship their musical roots, but doesn't every prog band?

Gong - Shamal. Sure, it isn't Daevid Allen's crazy creation that we all know and love, but it is one of the funkiest and most atmospheric pieces of prog I know.

Glass Hammer - Chronometree, Lex Rex, The Culture of Ascent and If. IMO, these four albums are masterpieces that have been dismissed due to their clear Yes and ELP influences.

Yes - Drama. IMO, Drama captures the true essence of prog.

Glass Hammer have put out a number of mighty albums but the best for me the best is The Inconsolable Secret. The first disc is perhaps standard issue retro prog although of a very high standard (Matt Mendians on drums is superb) but its the second disc thats elevates this album. Beautifull semi medieval sounding symph prog. Totally unique and great to listen to. This album got dismissed for it slightly unuusal structure which has to be the worst reason ever for marking down a prog album!

Drama is a good shout. Probably my favourite Yes album once you get past the holy triumvirat of The Yes ALbum, Fragile and CTTE. Remarkably fresh recording for the time and perhaps only marked down because no Anderson and Wakeman were present?

Judging by PA ratings I guess?

Barclay James Harvest - Barclay James Harvest (1970)    3.21 | 98 ratings

It isn't  flawless (no BJH album is in my opinion), but it has three very great songs (out of 7)  which makes it worth 4.

The Gathering - Always (1992)   2.43 | 37 ratings

It sounds a bit unpolished, but the music is genuine. I find three very good songs there. Its rating should go up +1 at least

Saga – Images At Twilight  (1980) 3.04 | 98 ratings

Oh no....what can I say. It should go up at least +1. I would say 4.5..

Saga – Behaviour  (1985)   3.12 | 72 ratings

At least the rating doesn't indicate that it is dismissed as forgettable pop rubbish. And there is a very big difference between this and the album that followed (which had 2 good songs though). But I would say 5...which makes it quite underrated.

Their first albums up until -85 are all very underrated.

Yes – Yes (1970) 3.12 | 72 ratings

Isn't this underrated? Survival is my favourite Yes song.

Camel - The Single Factor (1982)  2.59 | 235 ratings

So many ratings, how can they be wrong? Well,it's easy to be mistaken. My initial reaction was that I didn't take it too seriously, but then I started liking it more and more, I had to confess that I really liked the pop songs, and the album has a very nice sound. But there are more atmospheric stuff as well, so it's a nice mixture of extroverted , energetic pop and more introverted atmospheric instrumental stuff. Camel's pop oriented songs is very uplifting, and there's a lot of feeling in it. They haven't lost their soul here, not at all. Maybe this is the most underrated album...rated below 3.

Both albums may have a low prog factor, but I still think the first Yes album is fantastic, because the compositions are so good! Anderson already was a great songwriter, and the instrumental parts are also very good, and the band plays with high energy.

Also Camel's Single Factor, which got it's name because the record company wanted a hit single, but it has great pop songs on it, I quite agree, and I like especially the tracks on which Andy Latimer collaborated with Anthony Phillips, like Heart's Desire / End Peace.

"Theme Of Secrets" by Eddie Jobson.
My all time favorite album, and probably one of the greatest composed albums ever made.

Another is "Atavachron" by Allan Holdsworth. Some might disagree, but I think it's a masterpiece of Jazz Fusion, and one of the best albums of the '80's.

The term "underrated" is often misused to list albums we like that most others dont.  The one prog album I truly consider underrated (and by that I mean "under-heard" or not even given a chance) is Devil Doll's "Eliogabulus".  Devil Doll's other albums are very good but they tend to wander around like walking through an abandoned asylum looking for ghosts.  I can understand why a prog fan would write off Devil Doll if they heard one of the other albums first, but "Eliogabulus" is a coherent, concentrated, breathtaking dose of musical evil that must be heard to be believed.  If you appreciate the darker side of prog - especially VDGG - you owe it to yourself to give this one a spin.

I love the Renaissance album 'Camera Camera' - now that's quality Prog from 1981 - hardly anyone notices it, and those that do.....................Angry
Another excellent album is Rick Wakeman's 'Silent Nights' - top-notch crossover album if there ever was one.

Camel's debut album never seems to get a lot of attention (compared to Mirage or Moonmadness). Its a really good album IMO.

I would say Relayer and Going For The One but they seem to be rated pretty good on here. Tormato has some really good moments, though its not as strong of an album as first two mentioned.

Rush's synth period (1982-1987) seems to get more hate than it should. Signals and Grace Under Pressure are my two favorite albums by them.

The 1976-1980 period of Genesis seems to get dismissed quite a lot but they did a lot of great stuff then, too. And despite its rated good,  Nursery Cryme doesn't seem to get a lot of attention, compared to Selling England or Foxtrot or Lamb. NC definitely one of my fav Genesis albums.

- Los Jaivas - Los Jaivas (also known as El Indio)
- Los Jaivas - Obras de Violeta Parra
- Nexus - Metanoia
- Invisible - Durazno sangrando
- Kharmina Buranna - El arte de seguir vivos
- Kharmina Buranna - Seres humanos
- Cazuela de Cóndor - Pasión, pánico, locura y muerte

- Jaime Rosas - Creciendo
- Matraz - Tiempo

Syd Barrett "The Madcap Laughs" and "Barrett."
People were stumbling onto a lot of this stuff over the next
20 years, maybe without hearing this album but maybe
sensing it in the culture somehow.  I'm not saying at times
it's not disturbing.

One can put together one good prog album out of taking
various tracks as some tracks are just kind of guitar strumming.
For those proggier tracks, sometimes listen to just one channel at a time.
Baby Lemonade is interesting in that way.

I would like to ADD:

Beardfish - The Void
Eloy - Inside
Kaipa post-70s -  All their post-70s albums are rated lower than they should be.  I love the group.
Kansas First album and Song For America I like better than Leftoverture and Point Of Know Return (they are not underrated though since they are rated high on PA)
Mostly Autumn - I love the group and many albums are rated lower than they should be.  Especially the two most recent albums.
Peter Hammill - I can crank up the rating on quite a few of his albums.
Spock's Beard - Brief Nocturnes and Dreamless Sleep (This may be their best album.  It is excellent, but people will not like it as much as the Neal Morse Era)

I will definitely second these albums that were already mentioned:

Rush - Caress Of Steel
Eloy - Colours
Pink Floyd - The Final Cut
King Crimson - Lizard; In The Wake Of Poseidon
Jethro Tull - Stand Up; This Was
King Crimson - The ConstruKction of Light
Riverside - Shrine of New Generation Slaves
Gentle Giant - Free Hand
Yes - Drama

I meant more in general, not on PA. Definitely, on PA Ommadawn is one of the highest rated albums and is rated higher than Tubular Bells. But outside of that, you usually only hear people talk about Tubular Bells and Moonlight Shadow (not even anything else from Crises). Not complaining about the popularity of Tubular Bells; I think it's well deserved; I just think it's weird that after becoming so popular for that that his other albums got such little attention in comparison.

I am tired of Renaissance’s “Azure D’Or” getting dumped on. Sure, it has shorter songs and lacks the orchestral arrangements, but damn, it still has some of their stronger compositions IMO. Jekyll and Hyde, The Flood at Lyons, The Discovery always give me chills.
