there are many frontmen that can play but don't. From what I saw on the Howard stern video she has a bout a grade 3 or 4 ability. Someone showed me a video of this geeky poro star playing the piano and it was like watching a 6 year-old play and the hosts of the show paraied the creep.

So she shouldn't get extra praise than a pop musician who doesn't play an instrument because she can do something extra? Seems to make perfect sense to me.

I guess none of you guys have ever heard of Art Tatum or Oscar Peterson. If you want to see them both go at Honky Tonk Train Blues just punch in Keith Emerson & Oscar Peterson Honky Tonk Train Blues on nyoutube. It's  from a 1976 Oscar Peterson CBC special. Peterson never played with sh*t musicians so this speaks volumes about Emerson's playing. If you want to hear the chit chat between Emerson & Peterson punch in Keith Emerson, Oscar Peterson's Piano Party Jan 1976.

I bashed my head against the wall 10 times after reading the first post, Lady Ga Ga? please give me a break will ya. Please. I'll have to say  Lady Ga Ga gives someone else to hate besides Célin Dion. Dead

I love Howie though. He da man.

I was going to troll this thread, but I had a change of heart.

Stefani Germanotta (aka Lady Gaga), is actually a pretty good pianist, in the Alica Keys type of way. She can play RnB, pop, etc. I don't fancy her music or anything, but she ain't bad. She's no virtuoso, and I can't imagine she practices enough where she could handle ELP or Wakeman stuff, but she's not bad.

One of the best piano players ever? Now, c'mon. She's an entertainer. If she was better, she'd be behind the piano more often than 1-2 songs a night and not dancing around like a fool. "Ima...... DANCIN' FOOL"

Light comes in unexpected places.

I thank you for Sorabji picking up my curiosity.

Exactly.  On an unrelated note, has Emerson ever performed Brubeck?  Would love to hear.  I love Brubeck's playing so much more, wonderful touch...not something Emerson seems to have much use for....in ELP.  Would be interesting if there is in fact a different side to his playing that is not tapped in prog rock.

Using Emerson as the highest standard for quality piano playing seems very ridiculous to me too. Playing fast =/= playing superbly.

And yes the Gaga lady is talented. Probably not a new Horowitz on the piano but quite good at writing pop songs.

Lady GaGa is one of the best song writers ever, but let's not go crazy about her piano playing.

This.

Oh and everybody knows that Billy Joel is the greatest piano player ever. Or maybe Nicky Hopkins who played with Steve Miller Band, Stones, Pretty Things and everybody else for that matter. No such thing as the greatest.

Lady Gugu? My appreciation of her increased mildly after seeing and hearing her duetting with Tony Bennett. I love that guy.

Well, I doubt Emerson could match Barbara Dennerlein or Rhoda Scott on the organ.   It goes on and on, people tend to assume the best THEY have heard is THE best ever.    It's not really peculiar to pop music.  I remember somebody here had difficulty believing Stevie Wonder was a better singer than Neal Morse when I said so, so I guess we all have our cocoons and comfort zones to some extent.

I'll have to watch that when I get home. Can't watch YT at work.

Anyway, the 'pop world' is only partly about the music. It's more to do with all the peripheral guff that goes with it; the look, the celeb lifestyle etc etc, and these are things that lovers of prog rock appear to have little interest in. The masses however love it, and someone like Lady Ga Ga is the perfect music industry character.

Her image changes all the time. This keeps people interested in her; dying to see her new outfit. The amount of focus on the image, takes the spot light off how meaningless her music is. I've heard worse, but what she does is in no way ground breaking, or memorable, even in the most insipid pop terms.

It doesn't really matter how good a musician she is if she chooses to make pap and fluff for mass consumption. Artists who combine genuine musical ability with a talent for writing accessable, but thoughtful music, are few and far between in the mainstream.

In my very humble opinion.
Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!

$$$

That's all it is in the end for today's "incredible" music. Create the lowest common denominator for the largest audience, with no sense of creating meaningful art that will stand the test of time.

But what do we care? The best prog will continue live on with its audience, King Crimson, Yes, Pink Floyd, Genesis etc. will always have an audience with us. Proggers really shouldn't complain about not getting enough attention, because unlike those corporate created pop-stars, our music will live on.

Wink
The human heart instrinsically longs for that which is true, good, and beautiful. This is why timeless music is never without these qualities.
