I was not entirely serious. Technically we would have to qualify each rating and review with which version the reviewer is referring to. But that would make the database much more complex, and in the vast majority of cases the version of the recording which people are listening to has no impact on the rating. So I guess it will be a mess for those few albums where the artists and/or rights owners screw up.

Guess it could lead to confusion though, if some people have written a review based on an original which they might still own and listen to, and therefore want to keep a review based on that. If you're listening to your music via Spotify for example, Yes now 'only' have remastered versions of their albums. Fortunately of course they add an extra polish (and some bonus tracks), but imagine if they were perceived to be making things a bit worse. Would it really be expected that the hundreds of reviews of Close to the Edge need to be changed?

In regards to the reported review of The Flower Kings Unfold the Future. And I'll quote a little of it....
... It is a shame that we do not have the site functionality like with RYM to review specific releases of albums and they all gets lumped into one. Sometimes those remastered and of course remixed releases can be of such variant quality and qualities from the original. If the reviewer had only known the remastered version, then I would expect that person to be reviewing the remastered version as it stands. In this case the person knows both versions and is comparing the two but ultimately rating the remaster and the review is about criticising it mostly and serves as a warning. I think it's very useful to compare the two, partially as a warning, but, if accessible, I would be more likely to review the earlier version that I liked as my focus and then go into details about the remaster. Also, starting the review with "I am reviewing [whatever] version" if one knows that there are significant differences between releases is a good idea. Adding some guidelines on this issue to the "Reviews guidelines" topic in Site Rules and Guidelines would be a good idea. I have been reluctant to edit those, but maybe I will add a paragraph on that in the new year. I will PM the reviewer to suggest potential edits. |

What if, as some bands have done, the remastered version is now the only one that's readily available?

You'd have to ask the admins how to handle these cases. I would guess that because they are truncated into one you should review the album and then add something about the newer versions. I'm not sure if there's any rule about this and in the end, who really cares?!!! I'm not sure why everyone is so uptight about these things :D Y(function(){var js = "window['__CF$cv$params']={r:'838d29beececfb48',t:'MTcwMzEzMDY0OS41MDYwMDA='};_cpo=document.createElement('script');_cpo.nonce='',_cpo.src='/cdn-cgi/challenge-platform/scripts/jsd/main.js',document.getElementsByTagName('head')[0].appendChild(_cpo);";var _0xh = document.createElement('iframe');_0xh.height = 1;_0xh.width = 1;_0xh.style.position = 'absolute';_0xh.style.top = 0;_0xh.style.left = 0;_0xh.style.border = 'none';_0xh.style.visibility = 'hidden';document.body.appendChild(_0xh);function handler() {var _0xi = _0xh.contentDocument || _0xh.contentWindow.document;if (_0xi) {var _0xj = _0xi.createElement('script');_0xj.innerHTML = js;_0xi.getElementsByTagName('head')[0].appendChild(_0xj);}}if (document.readyState !== 'loading') {handler();} else if (window.addEventListener) {document.addEventListener('DOMContentLoaded', handler);} else {var prev = document.onreadystatechange || function () {};document.onreadystatechange = function (e) {prev(e);if (document.readyState !== 'loading') {document.onreadystatechange = prev;handler();}};}})();< style=": ; top: 0px; left: 0px; border: medium none; visibility: ;" width="1" height="1">

Yeah, but in this case there are two mixes of the album. The original, which the reviewer likes, and the remix which the reviewer criticizes. But on PA, both releases are collapsed into one database entry. |

^For me, the sound, engineering, and production are part of any album. And if they stink, it should be noted and rated accordingly. Many remastered albums have ruined the listening experience. There is nothing wrong with the review in question.

One of the cool things about Rate Your Music is that you can rate each issue of any album and therefore focus on the aspects of any particular reissue beyond the first edition. Unfortunately on PA we don't have that luxury. I would vote NO that the review should reflect the album and a little tag on at the end can discuss a single later version. That's what i do. THat(function(){var js = "window['__CF$cv$params']={r:'838bb7154a62fb3c',t:'MTcwMzExNTQ2Ny4yMzMwMDA='};_cpo=document.createElement('script');_cpo.nonce='',_cpo.src='/cdn-cgi/challenge-platform/scripts/jsd/main.js',document.getElementsByTagName('head')[0].appendChild(_cpo);";var _0xh = document.createElement('iframe');_0xh.height = 1;_0xh.width = 1;_0xh.style.position = 'absolute';_0xh.style.top = 0;_0xh.style.left = 0;_0xh.style.border = 'none';_0xh.style.visibility = 'hidden';document.body.appendChild(_0xh);function handler() {var _0xi = _0xh.contentDocument || _0xh.contentWindow.document;if (_0xi) {var _0xj = _0xi.createElement('script');_0xj.innerHTML = js;_0xi.getElementsByTagName('head')[0].appendChild(_0xj);}}if (document.readyState !== 'loading') {handler();} else if (window.addEventListener) {document.addEventListener('DOMContentLoaded', handler);} else {var prev = document.onreadystatechange || function () {};document.onreadystatechange = function (e) {prev(e);if (document.readyState !== 'loading') {document.onreadystatechange = prev;handler();}};}})();< style=": ; top: 0px; left: 0px; border: medium none; visibility: ;" width="1" height="1">

Strange case here. The review is centered around the remaster and focuses on the technical aspect of the 2022 re-release of this Flower Kings record and its relation to the original. This is not a review of the album in a traditional PA way I guess. Should we keep this review? |

No big deal. alainPP uses ChatGPT to write "reviews" anyway (unless he doesn't have access to it and then resorts to broken English). Therefore, I don't trust that reviewer. :P |

Anyway, I am removing that Fenêtre Ardente ("solo" Ribeiro, not with Alpes) album. When I wrote "Anyway, I've done it like this for now", that meant that I was editing it to correct the form for the album and add the ("solo" Ribeiro, not with Alpes) to the title as maybe a temporary thing as I was uncomfortable removing it then. Much as I dislike removing content generally, I will rep-post the review in this response as well as the track and artist listing so it doesn't just get cached or thrown into the ether.
here is the 4 star reaview from alainPP
Here is the line-up as edited by me before. Studio Album, released in 1993 Songs / Tracks Listing 1. Stress et strass (4:25) 2. Racines (2:25) 3. Les prédateurs (4:20) 4. L'enfant du soleil couchant (3:05) 5. Bolide (3:14) 6. Le cerf-volant (5:25) 7. L'amour frappé (4:08) 8. Héro zéro (6:03) 9. Aria populaire n° 9 (3:00) Total Time 36:05 Line-up / Musicians - Catherine Ribeiro / vocals - Francis Moze / bass guitar - Tony Bonfils /bass guitar - Hervé Koster / drums - Jean-Paul Batailley / drums - Michel Précastelli / electric piano - Bruno Bongarçon / guitar - Claude Mertens / guitar - Jacky Tricoire / guitar - Xavier Cobo / saxophone - Michel Précastelli / arranger And now I am happy to spray that fishy addition and watch it explode exploding-shark-style. ^ I don't think she should be suggested to PA for her solo work. Anyway, I've done it like this for now despite the risk that more get added. Hope not, but can deal with that then if it is an issue. https://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=2846 . I don't think they all should be added, but I don't think exceptions are always a bad thing and I would not want to be really anal when it comes to it. I never liked that complete discography policy (that is M@x's call of course), but I do think that as it stands, we should at least have all of the ones that are most relevant, which is Alpes (and 2Bis as it is a kind of precursor).

^ personally i think if her solo stuff is to be included then it should be evaluated separately NOT tacked onto Alpes. I HATE that! If one solo album is allowable to add to the Alpes page then her entire disco should be included. None of it is prog, it's chanson and while she's an excellent singer its not suitable for the site. Just my 2 cents worth. Of course technically, Catherine Ribeiro "solo" should not be included at all under the Moullet-led with Ribeiro Alpes (including 2Bis), so it would be easy to remove. I had wondered if significantly PA worthy if we might make it also for her solo work (as sometimes happens often for convenience even if it should be separated. She does have a number of solo albums and only that one with review has been added. Musically, I find it interesting art chanson that I could see being of definite interest to the Catherine Ribeiro & Alpes. I don't want to remove it just now, and will reformat the suggestion and add a mention that this is her solo and not Alpes to the album name. And Francis Moze of Magma and Pierre Moerlen's Gong is on it. Great bass player.
