That's because said shift doesn't exist, it's just his persecution complex talking.

What an obnoxious person you are, casting insults at anyone who disagrees with you.

I've not got a persecution complex at all - I've been here a lot longer than you and know loads of users personally who've gone off the site (I used to use the site through my late partner's account since 2003 before I registered in my own right after he died).

^^ Colin: "You might think that, you might very well think that; I could not possibly comment" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oz8RjPAD2Jk

That classic Urquhart line said, I will comment a bit, I haven't really observed the phenomenon either (and must admit that it was a bit of a troll from me -- sorry 'bout that).  Perhaps there has been some shift since the really early days of the PA forum (I was lurking around here since the beginning, basically, and do think that there are more who are into less bog-standard Prog now, but then the site has grown, so it's to be expected, but then one would expect more boggers here too).  The "avanteers", though a select few, may be more vocal than they once were, and perhaps are not as marginalised as they once were.

I once bumped an old Arena vs. Area poll, and Arena was way ahead when I bumped it, but after I bumped it most people voted for Area (which is not to imply that Arena is bog music; just an example, y' know, of a more experimental act, though more of a classic too, against another). That said, Neo-Prog, of course, often displeases the older classic Prog "worked as a roadie with Yes when they were still good" set.

Except that symph has a chance of getting knocked out, so the poll has got that going for it, which is nice.

Interesting.  I consider Zeuhl to be a sub-category of Avant Prog and of course Magma plays RIO fests and influenced some RIO bands, including perhaps my favourite band, Art Zoyd.

Agreed.  I'd almost sooner someone cut off my manhood...

It's rather sad for me to see three of my favourite categories with as many votes already as they have (RIO?Avant, Progressive Electronic, and Zeuhl).

I'm not sure how I'll vote.  I'm leaning towards symph even though it has some of my favourite albums in it (especially in the French symph scene).  Nah, I can't do it.  I might go with Proto-Prog or Post-Rock... Erm, maybe Crossover... *throws in the towel* don't think I'll vote.  I don't think that any of my particular favourite categories will get to the end even if Krautrock has done well so far.

Hercules has mentioned a shift in tastes at PA towards more experimental music, which has alienated a certain kind of Progger (hope I'm getting that right), but I don't think that shift is enough to save my favourites.

Zeuhl was almost knocked out a few weeks ago, but managed to stay alive very well after that, until now, because it's just passed RIO/Avant-Prog.

From what it looks like now, it most likely will. If not anything unexpected happens of course.
Even worse, Zeuhl might be next. Cry

I'll have to wait until much later to see where my tactical vote goes to try & save RIO and Zeuhl.

This is hard now - I love loads of acts and albums featured in these subs. I don't listen to as much symphonic more though, so that's where my vote goes, but we're down to nit-picking here.
