'Stationary Traveller' is a good album for sure, but to these ears it sounds rather too much like the Alan Parsons Project at times. The best bits are the instrumental sections, which sound the most like the Camel of old, ironically enough.

Camel is one of the few classic symphonic rock bands I where I witnessed many women on their concerts I use to describe their albums (until Stationary Traveller) as 'warm bath symphonic rock', it sounds so melodic, harmonic and moving and you can feel the emotion, especially when Andy Latimer delivers another compelling guitar solo. I have seen Camel many times between 1981 and now: the concerts were always sold out, the atmosphere was always great and Camel never disappointed so perhaps Second Division but being in the Premier League doesn't mean you play attractive .. I tend to say, in contrary ...

Second division? Absolute nonsense- I don't get how a band as musically adept as Camel but with such a strong sense of melody and emotion could be shunned with such an underhand term.
My personal favourite is 'Nude'- a masterpiece of prog that simply doesn't get the credit it deserves. It's arguably their best album to these ears, in that it sums up their career in a way. 'The Snow Goose' runs it close, but I like them all bar 'The Single Factor' and even that isn't terrible.

This band are Premier League without doubt; in fact, my favourite band. Certif1ied has hit the nail on the head as to why some rubbish them: they're not pretentious. Exactly the same reason some rubbish my second favourite band, Mostly Autumn, in fact.

I have : Mirage Snow Goose Moonmadness
Which do you suggest I buy next ?

For me Camel is the best band in the 70's prog. Call me subjective, I don't care, only Pink Floyd can be compared with them. Yes, Crimson, Genesis... all of them are maybe more complex, but Camel touch emotions like any other band.
I'm the only one who thinks that "Air Born" have one of the best beginings of a song in the history of music?

Camel have written some brilliant songs, though many feel because they appeared relatively late in 1973 some of their music contains many influences, using keyboards and flute. Personally i think they're a fantastic group and lately have been reacquainting myself with their music, having not heard very much of them for many years. Their early albums are good, my favourite is "Mirage" "Camel" and "Snowgoose" is a grower!

i agree, camel is a fantastic band and is definetly among my favourites. i'm not too familiar with their later releases, but the classics moonmadness, mirage and the snow goose have to be some of the greatest prog records of the 70's. their best moment though is in my opinion the very emotional live version of ice on coming of age. pure brilliance!

I only have the three classics, but am considering diving into some of their more recent stuff. But of the three classic albums of theirs, I would rate them like this:
1. Moonmadness
2. Mirage
3. The Snow Goose

You bought all their albums (minus 1) in one fell swoop!?! Wow, I don't know what to say...
Actually, I did the same thing with my golf clubs. The consenus among my friends was that the 7 iron was the club to start with, then work my way through to the more difficult ones. But I ended up saying the hell with it and bought the entire set, although I probably could have skipped the 1 iron!

Got into the band lately after many unfruitful attempts, but it just 'clicked'. Bought their three mandatory albums, 'Mirage', 'The Snow Goose' and 'Moonmadness'. All great albums!
Next I will purchase (in no particular order) : Camel, A Live Record, Rain Dances, Harbour of Tears, Rajaz & A Nod and a Wink.
Any more suggestions anyone? I really love this band!

Darkshade - don't waste a minute! Buy A Nod And A Wink - some regard this is their return to "roots".
I've heard that Latimer, Ward and Ferguson made a new material lately. What a surprise! I can't wait to listen to it.
And hats off to Pete Bardens... RiP. |
Listening to The Snow Goose as I type... what a great album!
New material from the original guys? This is great news!!! Where did you hear that?

I've had A Nod And A Wink and Stationary Traveler for quite some time. The other night, however, I went on a bender and ordered Moonmadness, Snowgoose, Mirage, and Rain Dances. Really looking forward to diving right into these when they arrive.

I wonder who thinks of them as second division, I think everybody loves Camel, so with no antagonists there will be no heated discussions around them.

They don't get discussed as much because there is a strong contingent of Progophiles who seem to think that they are somehow second division because;
a) They write fantastic and accessible melodies
b) They don't go in for overblown virtuosity
c) They stay away from mind-bending avante-garde
d) They don't do polyrhythms or multi-tonalities
None of that matters to me, though - Camel are one of my favourite bands; Premier division Prog in my opinion
It may be a bit predictable, but Mirage is my favourite, followed by the less predictable Harbour of Tears.
