Karn evil nine would probably be a good way to do it, having three fairly distinct sections, solos for all three guys... and the length, of course.

There is no one song that defines prog
"Art is not imitation, nor is it something manufactured according to the wishes of instinct or good taste. It is a process of expression."

  1. Must be classical influenced
  2. Must have drastic changes
  3. Must have virtuoso performances
  4. Must be Original
  5. Better if an epic.

So it's between:

  • Supper's Ready
  • Close to the Edge
  • Karn Evil 9
  • Hamburger Concerto
  • All the Seats Were Ocuppied (666)
  • In the Court of the Crimson King

But I could avoid N° 5. so my best choices are:

  1. The Musical Box
  2. Trilogy
  3. Starless

Dimmu Borgir an excellent representation of the genre of prog? I like Dimmu to some extent, but I don't even think they're prog, nevermind an ideal representation of the whole genre!

I'd have to go with:
   Starless
   South Side of the Sky
   Thick as a Brick
   Supper's Ready
Arriving Somewhere But Not Here (for big newbies)
Pull Me Under (for metal fans)

Hey, I was just thinking about this a few minutes ago.  I would have to say Close to the Edge, but a lot of the famous epics would be good too (Echoes, 2112, Supper's Ready, and so on)
"Mister Fripp, your music is quite different than everything
else out there. In one word, how would you describe it?"

"Progressive.... yeah, that's it..."

For me any track in 'Ciclos' by Los Canarios is what prog is about.

Don't forget that Gates Of Delerium easily defines prog!!!! From genesis I would say can-utility and the coastliners (everything that makes genesis a great band, in a nutshell)

Thick as a Brick - Jethro Tull.

If not, other runners would have to be Tarkus, 2112, maybe Close to the Edge.

I'll go with "Firth of Fifth", but "Supper's Ready" has got it going on.

Then there's always "21st Century Schizoid Man", "On Reflection" or "Echoes"...

It has both electronic and acoustic instruments, quiet and loud passages, great singing (soft and more aggressive) and great instrumental playing, it's lyrical content is surrealistic, it showcases fabulous group interaction but also wonderful solos (Banks & Hackett), it's a stretched out song with different passages but with a unifying theme...

What do you think?

I would have liked saying it exactly the same way. Thatīs  prog in itīs purest sense

Sadly, "Dark side of the moon" is now 2nd. overall because it has greater prog elements in "On the run" and "Us and them"
