Is "The Real Thing" supposed to be "Eleanor Rigby"? Just trying to track what I've added to the all videos playlist. Speaking of which, that Rebecca Black song feels like some kind of stain. It is pretty bad.

Yeah, I think they chose "All Along the Watchtower" as my selection.

I've noticed that "All Along the Watchtower" has been placed into the poll. Is this The Dark Elf's nomination, or is it assumed to be mine (I haven't chosen mine yet)? If this is The Dark Elf's nomination, then I assume that I'm free to choose either "Magic and Ecstasy" or "The Real Thing", AND also have "All Along the Watchtower" in the poll (which I can vote for?).

No, I know how to behave in the restaurant now, I don't tear at the meat with my hands. If I've become a man of the world somehow, that's not necessarily to say I'm a worldly man.

Living Colour – Memories Can’t Wait Love this version, but regrettably, Geo remindied me that I am already too familiar with this one. Patti Smith – So You Want to Be a Rock & Roll Star Excellent cover with her attitude thrown in, what could be better? I’m only familiar with a scattered amount of songs from her, and this is one I hadn’t heard. Those that are interested in more of her work should listen to “Dancin’ Barefoot” which is a favorite of mine from her, which, strangely enough, I was introduced to through U2’s cover. Her version is much better. Smashing Pumpkins – Never Let Me Down I own a few albums by Smashing Pumpkins, but I haven’t heard this one before. Again, another excellent choice. Live – I Walk the Line – Great cover with that minor key change, however, I’m already too familiar with this one. Ozzy Osbourne – 21st Century Schizoid Man Obvious cover from Ozzy and he does it convincingly enough, but it’s not quite original enough for me. Sort Sol – Ode to Billie Joe I must admit I really liked this one for the first few minutes, but then it felt like it was dragged on a bit too long. Sileas – Ain’t No Sunshine Nice original version, but it doesn’t quite hit the mark. The Unthanks – Sea Song Greg always seems to find one that I really like and this is the case once again. Beautiful cover with nice vocal inflections that bring out the meaning of the lyrics quite well. Kat Onoma – Radioactivity This is one that should effect me in a positive way, but it never seems to leave an impression for some reason. I think it’s one that I would have to hear several times for it to sink in, but for now, it’s not quite there. Senor Coconut – The Robots I absolutely love this version, so cool and quirky and completely unexpected. Annie Haslam – Ripples One of my favorite Genesis songs and this cover does it a lot of justice. This artist is one that I have been exploring a bit as of late, but I hadn’t heard this one before. Great choice. Placebo – Running Up that Hill This is an all-time favorite song of mine that I consider to be one of those “perfect songs”. However, I’m already too familiar with it, and though it brings in a lot of nice emotion and meaning to the song, I still think Kate Bush’s version is the best I’ve heard. Jimi Hendrix – All Along the Watchtower I’m way too familiar with this one already for a good reason. |

I'm going to go with Chris Cornell's "Billie Jean" as it is probably the most changed from the original and there was a lot of positive feedback about it.
I was also seriously considering Suzanne Vega because I have always loved her voice, and she took a couple of Grateful Dead songs that I hadn't really paid much attention to before hearing this cover and gave them new life for me. Also, I absolutely love Jeff Buckley's rendition of "Lilac Wine", but I think many might consider it too slow. So, "Billie Jean" it is.

That's funny (or not) that I was watching Puddles sing Sound of Silence a few days ago. He's actually got quite a strong voice.

Why I said, hands down, one of the BEST ever cover songs. Even thinking about it gives me goosebumps.

So, I gave it some thought. I threw several covers out there, but as I was researching I came upon a quote by Bob Dylan, who stated Jimi Hendrix's version of "All Along the Watchtower" was the definitive rendition of his song:
"It overwhelmed me, really. He had such talent, he could find things inside a song and vigorously develop them. He found things that other people wouldn't think of finding in there. He probably improved upon it by the spaces he was using. I took license with the song from his version, actually, and continue to do it to this day." So Dylan not only agreed Hendrix's version was better, but Bob actually started playing his own song more in the style of Hendrix's adaptation. I consider the Hendrix version the greatest cover of all time.

Thanks! Interesting history with that band, that was why I commented. I enjoyed both of Moshkito's selections and his thoughts re Mike Heron.

I was specifically talking about Manfred Mann's Earth Band. The group led by Manfred Mann that followed after his 60's band broke up. I have heard some of the 60's stuff too. It is interesting trivia about the Bob Dylan songs.

Forgot the emoticon on the post ... I love MM and have something like 20+ albums ... and I love his cover of Mike Heron's songs both of which did really well. I'm sure that Mike is happy about that ... but it's not helping the redoing of DIAMOND OF DREAMS ... an incredibly great album of music, although some won't like the fact that here is a rock Mike Heron, not a folkie!

MM's first hit was a Bob Dylan song! Way back in the 60's. And up until SOLAR FIRE every album by MM had a Bob Dylan song!
