Detroit teams are going for the Trifecta again today, but even better. The Tigers beat the Yankees 8 - 4 to complete their first sweep of the Yankees and Yankee stadium since 1966. i.e. it had never happened in my lifetime. It is such a shame that they are closing the stadium after this year.
The Pistons beat the 76ers by 24, 101 to 77. They jumped out to a 10-0 lead and never looked back. They survived the first round and now move on to the next round against the Orlando Magic.
And as I am typing this Johan Franzen just scored his 11th goal of the playoffs and the Wings now have a 6 to 1 lead over the Colorado Avalanche with 8 minutes left to play in the 2nd period. Anything can still happen, but I'd say that the odds are pretty good that the Wings are about to complete a sweep and move on to the next round.
Another great sports day in the Motor City (although all 3 teams were on the road so none of this actually happened in the Motor City).
Edit: Make that Wings game 7-1 after two periods.

True. I got to watch the Cubs play tonight and see another player that got away. Aramis Ramirez. I wonder how the Bucs would be with his bat in the lineup now?

It was good to see the Pirates lose again to the Mets in 11 innings last night. *sighs*

Detroit sports fans hit the Trifecta last night. The Tigers beat the Yankees 6-4; the Wings beat the Avalanche 4-3 to go up 3 games to none in their 2nd round playoff series; and the Pistons beat the 76ers 98-81 to go up 3 games to 2 in their 1st round playoff series. It probably happens more often than I can remember, but I can't remember the last time that all 3 teams won on the same night.

The Tigers are in for a 3 day visit to Yankee Stadium. I'm hoping that they can take at least 2 out of 3 from the Yankees, who are also struggling, but I am afraid that the Tigers uncharacteristically anemic starting pitching will be the antidote to the Yankees' woes. Unlike the Tampa Rays who seem to sweep the Yankees no matter how they are playing, the Yankees always seem to give their best to the Tigers, with the 2006 American League Division Series being the exception. It will also be interesting to see which Tigers hitters show up. The ones that are capable of scoring double digit runs every game, or the one that has shown up most nights this season and been shut out 4 times and held to less than 4 runs on many other occasions. I'm hoping for the former. At the very least, hopefully it is a good series with exciting finishes (unless of course it is Todd "The Roller Coaster" Jones who is providing the exciting finishes, in which case I hope the Tigers win soundly).

Oh, I'm not saying the Pirates former GM was good. The Adam LaRoche trade hasn't worked out so far, and he's off to poor start, but then again Mike Gonzalez on the Braves is still injured.
You're right though, it's really unfair to the fans, especially having that new ballpark. Something is seriously wrong with their management if they've had this many losing seasons in a row. Didn't many people walk out of a game last year?

I heard about that but what I did hear was that they returned to their seats. I just can't imagine a reason for not putting money into a ballclub with all the monies being received from the TV package that is divided up amongst all the clubs. Another idea would be to cap the salary of the clubs and put the remaining monies into the minors and make it so that career players that never make it to the majors have something of a pension plan. I would like to be able to go to a game and spend less than $25 for the seat and food but I don't see that happening as long as guys are getting paid what they are and the payroll of the club is 100M+.

I'll agree with the part about shoring up the pitching staff, although if that's what they wanted to do, they should have looked at cheaper options other than a pitcher who is making $10 million (?) a year for that season and this season. But I can't see the Pirates fans getting excited about an overpriced pitcher coming to their team who has lost several straight decisions. I suppose the Pirates are lucky they only gave up a backup outfielder to get him, but they certainly weren't lucky that they had to pay his whole contract.

Well name one good decision that the Pirates have made other than getting Jason Bay. I keep hoping that Adam LaRoche will pan out. Their downward spiral started back in the 90's after they dismantled the team that had Bonds and Bonilla on it. They have a beautiful ballpark and the fans deserve better than what they have been given the last 14 seasons.

Interesting to see the Pirates cut Matt Morris, who has been awful since that trade last year. Which raises the question: why did the Pirates trade for Matt Morris? I still have not seen an reasonable answer to that question. I mean, they gave up almost nothing to get him, but why would a rebuilding team take on a dead-weight contract like Morris's? I think he had lost seven decisions in a row before that trade.

My simple answer would be to get a veteran to shore up their young pitching staff and hopefully get a pitcher with still something left in him to appease the fans who feel that the management don't spend enough to be competitive.

I will never get used to hearing "The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim". Pick a name and stick with it. They have been....The Los Angeles Angels,The California Angels, The Anaheim Angels and now this.
At least the Athletics physically change their geographic location to merit the name change from Philadelphia to Kansas City to Oakland. The Angeles have always played in the L.A/Orange county metro areas.

The Tigers rotation this year has had as many quality starts (six innings or more with three earned runs or less) as Chien-Ming Wang.

I attended the Tigers game Friday night and saw them lose 4-3 to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Nate Robertson, was Nate Robertson, and pitched an excellent game except for 1 inning. He gave up all 4 runs in the 4th inning. That has pretty much been his downfall his entire career. He'll start out the game pitching 0's and then all of a sudden he has an inning where he gives up 4, 5 or 6 runs. If he survives the inning he goes on to pitch a string of 0's afterwards. The big blow was a 2-run homer from Vlad the Impaler, who probably should have made my list of 10 players who I have seen in person, after he had him down no balls and 2 strikes.
Yesterday, rookie pitcher Armando Gallaraga had a no-hitter through 5 2/3 innings before giving up a triple to Vlad the Impaler in the 6th inning. He left the game in the 7th inning with a 3-2 lead and a man on 2nd base. Relief pitcher Aquilino Lopez proceeded to allow the runner to score so Gallaraga didn't get the well-deserved win, but kept the score at 3-3. The Tigers came back with 3 runs in the bottom of the 7th and went on to win 6-4. I took my 3 year old nephew to the game since I am trying to help bring him up right as a Tigers fan. He was more interested in the food and the rides and singing Take Me Out To The Ballgame than the actual game, but when I could get his attention on the game I had fun getting him to cheer "Let's Go Tigers".

---how long have you been in St Louis? No games during the inaugural World Series title year?
So are you a Dodgers fan or a Cardinal fan? |
Moved to Missouri in '95 and St. Louis last year. A fan of neither team, I like baseball.

You can be a fan of a team and like baseball too.
Are you going to see Crimson play in either Nashville or Chicago? |
Wish that I could be but between work and family I can't do it this time around. I am hoping that they play next year.
