Yes, another sports thread.
Any baseball fans around? Talk about your favorite team/players/your predictions or just baseball talk in general.
Personally, I am a life long Yankees fan. I guess it may just be false hope...but I really think they will make it into the playoffs.
Pitching has gotten to a decent point and the offense has been pretty explosive.
BTW I was inspired to make this by the Yanks beating Tampa Bay 18-3 by the 6TH inning.

Athletics are my team, not doing so well this season but usually great for over-achieving.
Thoughts on Barry Bonds homing in on the home run record?

My team the Royals are improving, but we have a while to go. We have a pretty good pitching staff, but really lack power at the plate and a descent outfield. The new revenue sharing is helping the smaller markets a little, but baseball is FAR from where it needs to be.
As for Bonds, I think the guys a real rectum head and makes me sick that he'll take over a record held by a true class gentleman of baseball.

...Oh, we made it to the 1st post before someone mentioned it.
I don't like the guy. And I know plenty of players roid up, but I really think his case is different. I think he deserves all the extra flak he's getting, because he is about to break one of the most prestigious sports records..with s huge dark cloud over him.
But it's OK. Eventually, whatever number Bonds puts up will be broken by A-rod.

I'm a Phillies fan. I'm hoping they could stay in contention, but I won't hold my breath. Their pitching is awful and the trade deadline won't help with all the mediocre and below average pitchers available. Obviously injuries don't help, but it's not like Garcia and Lieber were pitching great anyway.... At least their offense has been terrific. Utley and Howard are up to 81 RBIS, and Howard has 27 homers. I'm amazed at Jimmy Rollins's numbers, he's hitting for power this year.
And since everyone else has mentioned Bonds, I'll just say I don't like him, and I think he took steroids.

I actually tend to take it easy on ol' Barry. Despite being a grumpy narcissist, and of course all the allegations, he doesn't deserve to have syringes (sp?) thrown at him in addition to the booing and media hounds. Keep in mind that he's never failed a drug test.
But it IS sad to see Hammerin Hank lose the record, the guy was a class act and symbolized all that was great about the civil rights era.

I had to pinch myself. After the Royals took 2 out of 3 from Boston, we turn around and 2 out of 3 from Detroit. Now for the dreaded Yankees. I don't have a good feeling because they're playing pretty good ball right now.

Man, I love watching golf and baseball (well, baseball has recently caught back up with me since the playing field is slowly starting to level out and there is some sense of parity). The British Open was enjoyable to watch...especially the playoff between Garcia and Harrington. Congrats to Padraig Harrington on his first major win.
Nothing will top Football (college and pro) for me.

Long time Phillies fan so I'm used to be disappointed by my team. If only we had a solid pitching rotation we'd be unstopable :( .
I hate Barry Bonds and I think there should be a large asterisk next to his name when he breaks Hank Aaron's record.

^ For all those that say that about Bonds produce evidence that he has. All his drug tests have come up clean, All of them. What other evidence do we have that he juiced? On top of that most people who do juice break down early. Their muscle mass become too large for their bone structure and cartilage and tendons. They have injury after injury (Jason Giambi for example)
But Barry is 43 and still playing left field!
For the Record I am no Bonds fan! Quite the contrary I am a Dodgers fan and anything to do with the Giants reeks to high heaven. All I am saying is the truth is the truth. Produce some evidence or stfu.
Now is Barry an ass? Without question.

Sure there is no definitive proof he used steriods, but the size of the guy speaks volumes to me. He should not be given the crown. Hank Aaron did it before steriods were being used. Aaron will always be the king followed by Ruth.

If he indeed used the steroids that he was purported to have used from the leaked grand jury testimony, i.e. the "cream" and the "clear", they are designer steroids (THG) which are precisely taken to avoid detection in doping tests. He claims that his trainer told him they were arthritis cream and flaxseed oil, respectively, and by doing so can assert plausible deniability about the whole affair. The only evidence we have is the testimony from the BALCO scandal, and leads to three possible scenarios, of which the truth will probably never be known.
1. Bonds was actually given arthritis cream and flaxseed oil to take. 2. Bonds was given THG steroids, but was duped by his trainer and had no knowledge of what he was taking. 3. Bonds was taking steroids and knew what he was doing the whole time.

this is a legal, court issue, it is all about the court of public opinion. The circumstantial evidence weighs HEAVILY against him. We all know the science of masking the use far exceeds the science of testing for it (or the ability to considering the 'rights' of players)
But Barry is 43 and still playing left field!
one of the most damning of the circumstantial evidence... at that age most ball players are angling for jobs with ESPN... not smacking 50 home runs a year. From my limited understanding.. one of the most beneficial side-effects of 'roid use is the ability to bounce back from injury and the aches and pains that a 162 game schedule can inflict on the body.

Three reasons:
1. A (somewhat) descent collective bargaining agreement which allows the smaller markets to compete with the fat @#$&! like the Yankees and Red Sox.
2. Owner David Glass FINALLY ponying up some money.
3. The termination of GM Allard Baird and bringing on Atlanta Braves' front office man Dayton Moore.
If memory serves, the Tigers haven't had much success up until a few years ago. Actually, the AL Central was once a laughing stock but now is one of the better divisions in the league.
Baseball STILL has a long way to go, however.

Yeah, it's quite sad to see how far this team had fallen from the 70's through to the mid 80's. The Royals and Yankees would have epic playoff battles, with the Yankees usually coming out on top until George Brett's homer off Goose Gossage in the ALCS and sending us to the series against Philly.
1985 was special with the win over the Cardinals. Cracks me up how Cardinals fans still play the Dekinger card. They usually shut back up when I tell them that, a.) the Cardinals batted around .180, while the Royals batted close to .300 for the series; b.) yes, Orta was called safe at first; but, he was ultimately thrown out at 3rd, thus never factored into the scoring; c.) The Cardinals literally imploded in that game 6 with passed balls, and Jack Clark misjudging a pop foul; d.) Royals turned around in game 7, just destroyed their ace in John Tudor (who also broke his hand after being pulled by punching a dugout wall fan) and easily won game 7 with a score of 11-0.
All of that, and they still play the Dekinger card.

I can't believe how overpaid some baseball players are. I can't be the only person who thinks the Ichiro contract was terrible. $19-$20 million a year for a leadoff hitter?!?! Now I know he always gets lots of hits, put up a very good average, and is a good basestealer, but that's absurd. Most power hitters don't even earn that much, the only two (off the top of my head) I can think of are Manny Ramirez and A-Rod. I don't want to know how much A-Rod will make if he opts out (which I think he will at the moment).

I still don't think the Yankee's have the pitching to do anything in ...even if they make the playoffs. There is a reason all that talent has come up short over the last few years.... good pitching ALWAYS beats good hitting.
as far as Bonds...
it will be a godsend for those who still love the game when he finally walks away into the sunset...and I hope the only time he sees the HOF is as a visitor. That I think will come to pass... many see Baseball as a part of Americana... and Bonds (and others of course) have been sticking their middle finger at it for years. History will have the final say on that I'm sure.

And Bonds is going to break the most prestigious record of the Great American past time...
It's also a blow to people like A-rod and Ken Griffey jr. Those are 2 great players that, at least to my knowledge, have not really been charged with steroid use. But like you said, hopefully history will sort out the true greats.

hopefully history will and good point about those two... no exploding head and foot sizes... just naturally talented players (as Bonds was) who played the game right.
Speaking of that.... .what do you think of Pujols. Remember how there were some questions around him last year... his numbers have dropped this year. He only has 4 more HR's than Chris Duncan.. .who... yes.. Chris Duncan hahhaha. I hope there is nothing to that.... I love Pujols.

This is an excerpt from the lyrics of a song by Robert Calvert which describes my attitude towards baseball very much. The lines refer to cricket but might as well be applied to baseball too:
I love that leather-on-willow sound The smell of the freshly-mown ground You say that you think it's no fun To stand like a rock in the sun
Me, with my big cricket bat My whites and my cloth-covered hat You say it's so dull you could scream To stand like a rock on the green
But when that ball comes like it's fired from a gun And when I hit out and when I start to run And when I hear all those voices start to roar 'Cause I've just added a new number to the score
That's when I get an adrenalin rush, that's when I get an adrenalin rush.
The only problem I have is: I don't really get that adrenalin rush he speaks of.

one of these I need to find out just what the hell Cricket is about
and this song sums it up for me
Well, beat the drum and hold the phone - the sun came out today!
We're born again, there's new grass on the field.
A-roundin' third, and headed for home, it's a brown-eyed handsome man;
Anyone can understand the way I feel.
CHORUS:
Oh, put me in, Coach - I'm ready to play today;
Put me in, Coach - I'm ready to play today;
Look at me, I can be Centerfield.
Well, I spent some time in the Mudville Nine, watchin' it from the bench;
You know I took some lumps when the Mighty Casey struck out.
So Say Hey Willie, tell Ty Cobb and Joe DiMaggio;
Don't say "it ain't so", you know the time is now.
CHORUS
Yeah! I got it, I got it!
Got a beat-up glove, a homemade bat, and brand-new pair of shoes;
You know I think it's time to give this game a ride.
Just to hit the ball and touch 'em all - a moment in the sun;
(pop) It's gone and you can tell that one goodbye! couldn't resist that one...

Yanks ended up winning 16-8.
Every player on the team is just hitting great right now, it's like a bombardment when they get going.

I just got home from a Dodger game, we ended up losing the game to the Diamondbacks 7 - 8, but we came back from a 1 - 8 deficit so that was pretty exciting and definitely a fun night a the ballpark.

if he stays healthy (obviously the big IF) there should be no reason he won't. Griffey should be a cautioning tale.... 5 years ago he looked like a lock to break Aaron's record.

Heard on the news a few hours ago.....
Bonds has finally done it. 756. Ah well, now we can be done with that whole thing, and wait for the next TRUE home run king.
To his credit, I heard Bonds had no problem with letting the fan keep the ball, unlike A-Rod....

Just posting timidly here to inform that baseball isn't an "exclusivity" of the USA.
A friend informed me that baseball is the 2nd most popular collective sport in the world!
Also currently the Brazilian League imported coaches from the USA, Japan, Cuba and Dominican Republic - they want to make baseball more widespread and visible... well, let's see what will happen in the near future.

Figured now is a good time to revive this:
WELL....I was more than hopeful about the Yanks I was sure. They led the wild card and were 4 behind Boston and playing well. They've slipped to 2 games behind the Mariners who I can't just dismiss anymore Mussina is getting old and I think he should be sent down. Every game is critical and the Yanks can't be losing 18-9 or whatever it was.
Also, I was watching the scores and the Rangers won 30-3!??! It's not a mistake. THIRTY to 3....... wow

Rangers 30 Orioles 3
Wow that's terrible... that beat the crap out of the Orioles pitching. I guess they were unlucky it was a double header (so they couldn't use more pitchers), and Texas still scored 9 runs in the second game!

Oh well, although I'm not thrilled with the idea it is going to be interesting next year for the Tigers when they have Sheffield and Barry Bonds platooning between DH, 1B and Left Field.
