Shrine of New Generation Slaves by Riverside is always the first that comes to my mind any time someone mentions the phrase "underrated album". So emotional, so powerful...Also very interesting musically. I guess direction changes throw people off sometimes... Only explanation I've got.

Ha, I realize that this is a 6 month old topic resurfaced by newbs like me, but oh well. The Final Cut is one of my favorite Floyd albums but never seems to be mentioned by other fans. Falling Into Infinity is probably tied with Scenes From a Memory as my favorite Dream Theater album, yet everybody hates on it all the time.

I think a lot of Neo-prog is very underrated.
Although, I probably have to say one of my top favorite albums that is very underrated is Moonshine by Collage.

"Theme Of Secrets" by Eddie Jobson.
My all time favorite album, and probably one of the greatest composed albums ever made.
Another is "Atavachron" by Allan Holdsworth. Some might disagree, but I think it's a masterpiece of Jazz Fusion, and one of the best albums of the '80's.

Isn't this underrated? Survival is my favourite Yes song.
Camel - The Single Factor (1982) 2.59 | 235

So many ratings, how can they be wrong? Well,it's easy to be mistaken. My initial reaction was that I didn't take it too seriously, but then I started liking it more and more, I had to confess that I really liked the pop songs, and the album has a very nice sound. But there are more atmospheric stuff as well, so it's a nice mixture of extroverted , energetic pop and more introverted atmospheric instrumental stuff. Camel's pop oriented songs is very uplifting, and there's a lot of feeling in it. They haven't lost their soul here, not at all. Maybe this is the most underrated album...rated below 3.

Both albums may have a low prog factor, but I still think the first Yes album is fantastic, because the compositions are so good! Anderson already was a great songwriter, and the instrumental parts are also very good, and the band plays with high energy.
Also Camel's Single Factor, which got it's name because the record company wanted a hit single, but it has great pop songs on it, I quite agree, and I like especially the tracks on which Andy Latimer collaborated with Anthony Phillips, like Heart's Desire / End Peace.

Free Hand by Gentle Giant. It should be in the top 10 albums of all time but it is not (currently no. 58 rating 4.27). C'mon. Let's get it in there.

Not most underrated from where I'm standing, but definitely a good album.

Judging by PA ratings I guess?
Barclay James Harvest - Barclay James Harvest (1970) 3.21 | 98 ratings
It isn't flawless (no BJH album is in my opinion), but it has three very great songs (out of 7) which makes it worth 4.
The Gathering - Always (1992) 2.43 | 37 ratings
It sounds a bit unpolished, but the music is genuine. I find three very good songs there. Its rating should go up +1 at least
Saga – Images At Twilight (1980) 3.04 | 98
ratings
Oh no....what can I say. It should go up at least +1. I would say 4.5..
Saga – Behaviour (1985) 3.12 | 72 ratings
At least the rating doesn't indicate that it is dismissed as forgettable pop rubbish. And there is a very big difference between this and the album that followed (which had 2 good songs though). But I would say 5...which makes it quite underrated. Their first albums up until -85 are all very underrated.
Yes – Yes (1970) 3.12 | 72 ratings
Isn't this underrated? Survival is my favourite Yes song.
Camel - The Single Factor (1982) 2.59 | 235

Glass Hammer have put out a number of mighty albums but the best for me the best is The Inconsolable Secret. The first disc is perhaps standard issue retro prog although of a very high standard (Matt Mendians on drums is superb) but its the second disc thats elevates this album. Beautifull semi medieval sounding symph prog. Totally unique and great to listen to. This album got dismissed for it slightly unuusal structure which has to be the worst reason ever for marking down a prog album!
Drama is a good shout. Probably my favourite Yes album once you get past the holy triumvirat of The Yes ALbum, Fragile and CTTE. Remarkably fresh recording for the time and perhaps only marked down because no Anderson and Wakeman were present?

Fruupp - Modern Masquerades. Sure, Fruupp worship their musical roots, but doesn't every prog band? Gong - Shamal. Sure, it isn't Daevid Allen's crazy creation that we all know and love, but it is one of the funkiest and most atmospheric pieces of prog I know.
