I know this isn't directed at me, but I'd personally suggest Cell-Scape and Speak Squeak Creak, the former probably being their most accessible.

Dungen
Tame Impala Which is kind of awkward seeing as one of these acts blatantly stole the other one's sound...

I've been interested in checking them out - do you have a favorite album you'd recommend for starters? |

sh*te Browne (1 album and two singles)
Katzenjammer Kabarett (2 albums on Projekt Records) Sabot (maybe not very modern, their first album had been released in 1991). Melt Banana (same as aboce, they're touring since the 90's). |

AFI, Muse, My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy, The Offspring's latest album, Rise Against etc.
And other mainstream bands that aren't really rock like Bright Eyes, James Blunt, The Script, Within Temptation.

This sounds difficult, but I don't think it is - when you have something simple like the three instrument line-up of guitar, bass and drum that can be either Jimi Hendrix Experience, Cream, Police, Nirvana, Green Day, Blink-182, Placebo, Manic Street Preachers, Biffy Clyro, Wolfmother or Muse without sounding like each other (or anyone else) then it's not their influences and inspirations we're listening to, nor is it just those three instruments.

Yes, yes, I'm not questioning the use of the genre definition, but the definition itself. What if I made music that is "modern" and "rock" in the 2020's? Could I claim it to belong to "modern rock"? That's the problem.

True, but isn't that how someone creates something new? Sure something is going to sound like a song you heard before but inside the music most likely there is something new added to it to make it completely different, but all at once you can see where artist possibly got the inspiration. ![]() |

^ Oh well, I wasn't aware of that "modern rock" is a subgenre. However, it sounds a quite self-indulgent definition, because the word "modern" has already several definitions, and there should always be music that is more modern than something that is older, even if the latter has been called "modern" in its time.

yes
evreything after the 80s is so called Modern rock, even on 2020 or 2030 the term modern rock defins 90s rock, 90s rock = modern rock, no mather how far you are removed from it, you can say the term modern rock can be marked with the releases of Pearl Jams Ten and Nirvanas Nevermind, with the subsequent wave fo bands who wanted to follow that sound or to alternativeate their own sound, like Smashnig Pumpkins, Radiohead, Janes Addiction, Rage Against the Machine, No Doubt, Goo Goo Dolls, the heyday of grunge and brit pop/rock can be said to be the defining terms of modern rock, becouse they defined the sound of the modern rock groups, Oasis, Blur, the Hives, the Cardigens, somehow you can also put in the mid 80s synth pop who moved towards alternative rock also like a-ha who had a alternative rock sound as well as synth pop sound, Talk Talk who moved from 80s synth to 90s post rock/alternative rock, Tears for Fears who went for a more artsy aporach, with Seeds of Love,, lots of undercurrents which would help define modern rock |

Is there really such thing as modern rock? IMO rock music is the most conservative form of culture. All bands are just recycling old things more or less.
