what is modern rock anything after the 90s, or from the 00s to the 10s,, anything after the 80s is modern rock, if then...hmmm, some Jellyfish (band) is a ncie 90s pop/rock/surf band, maybe some Foo Fighters, they have alot of energy and you just feel inspired listening to Dave Grohl singing,Big smile,  Pearl Jam are nice and have some good albums from the 90s and 00s, also Jeff Buckley album Grace should be listend to, great eclectic rock album with raga touches

I think most of the modern bands I listen to are kind of "out there", but here's a couple which aren't all that weird:

Yo La Tengo - New Jersey trio that's been around for 20+ years, very Velvet Underground-influenced

Field Music -- sharp British pop rock that's intelligent but not wimpy.  Reminds me of 10cc and XTC a bit.

I really like Kings of Leon sometimes. I honestly don't know much modern rock even though I'm in college and surrounded by it every day.

Most of the rock I listen to is stuff from the '90s - Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Stone Temple Pilots, etc.

I listen to a bit of modern rock, but most of it washes over me as "stuff I've heard before". Of the Top-40 bands Biffy Clyro, 30 Seconds to Mars and My Chemical Romance can produce albums that interest me, as does Muse of course. My current favourite non-prog rock band would be http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Eden_House" rel="nofollow - The Eden House .

Is there really such thing as modern rock? IMO rock music is the most conservative form of culture. All bands are just recycling old things more or less.

yes

evreything after the 80s is so called Modern rock, even on 2020 or 2030 the term modern rock defins 90s rock, 90s rock = modern rock, no mather how far you are removed from it, you can say the term modern rock can be marked with the releases of Pearl Jams Ten and Nirvanas Nevermind, with the subsequent wave fo bands who wanted to follow that sound or to alternativeate their own sound, like Smashnig Pumpkins, Radiohead, Janes Addiction, Rage Against the Machine, No Doubt, Goo Goo Dolls,

the heyday of grunge and brit pop/rock can be said to be the defining terms of modern rock, becouse they defined the sound of the modern rock groups, Oasis, Blur, the Hives, the Cardigens, somehow you can also put in the mid 80s synth pop who moved towards alternative rock also like a-ha who had a alternative rock sound as well as synth pop sound, Talk Talk who moved from 80s synth to 90s post rock/alternative rock, Tears for Fears who went for a more artsy aporach, with Seeds of Love,, lots of undercurrents which would help define modern rock

^ Oh well, I wasn't aware of that "modern rock" is a subgenre. However, it sounds a quite self-indulgent definition, because the word "modern" has already several definitions, and there should always be music that is more modern than something that is older, even if the latter has been called "modern" in its time.

True, but isn't that how someone creates something new? Sure something is going to sound like a song you heard before but inside the music most likely there is something new added to it to make it completely different, but all at once you can see where artist possibly got the inspiration.

Yes, yes, I'm not questioning the use of the genre definition, but the definition itself. What if I made music that is "modern" and "rock" in the 2020's? Could I claim it to belong to "modern rock"? That's the problem. Tongue

That something new has to be "indentity", it has to be that magical element that seperates the artist not only from his inspiration but also from every other new band that used the same influence and inspiration or else it is just a tribute at best or a pale immitation at worse. This does not require something radically different or new, it's more a combination of all the parts adding together to making something that is original.

This sounds difficult, but I don't think it is - when you have something simple like the three instrument line-up of guitar, bass and drum that can be either Jimi Hendrix Experience, Cream, Police, Nirvana, Green Day, Blink-182, Placebo, Manic Street Preachers, Biffy Clyro, Wolfmother or Muse without sounding like each other (or anyone else) then it's not their influences and inspirations we're listening to, nor is it just those three instruments.

if it drew influence from Nirvana or similar bands sure Tongue,  modern rock like rock that is not glam rock or synth rock, it is a variation fo alternative rock, i would guess, with a harder more direct edge, influenced by punk i think, or with noise rock like the Pixies and Sonic Youth,, and the Flaming Lips

And other mainstream bands that aren't really rock like Bright Eyes, James Blunt, The Script, Within Temptation.

sh*te Browne (1 album and two singles)
Katzenjammer Kabarett (2 albums on Projekt Records)

Melt Banana (same as aboce, they're touring since the 90's).

To say the truth, I've been listening to them for... three months, maybe? So far, I've only listened to :
 - Cell-Scape (2003)
 - Bambi's Dilemma (2007).
 - Lite Live ver0.0 (2007)

i've been quite surprised: I was expecting something harsher, but an album like Bambi's Dilemma is close to some 90's punk-pop bands!

A few people have mentioned My Chemical Romance.  What are your thoughts on their 2010 release, Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys.  My only other MCR album is their debut, I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love, which I didn't like much on first listen, but grew to like it later.  (Only had that one for a couple of years.)  Anyway, I found Danger Days to be one of the most disappointing albums I've ever bought.  Very mediocre pop-rock songs that sound like they were written by a record producer, not a rock band.

THE BLACK PARADE.

My favourite album ever, prog or not. It's just fantastic. I don't like anything else they've done, although the others have occasional good songs. Danger Days is my second favourite from them, but got bad on the second side.

The only thing bad about the Black Parade is Teenagers. Swap that with Heaven Help Us (a b-side) and it would have been perfection.

It's like epic and conceptual and quite dark in places. Call it emo if you want, but it's brilliant.

It's nothing like their first two albums by the way, much more melodic.

My favorite albums from 1990 to Today (excluding ones listed on this site):

1990 - Lucifage - Danzig
1990 - Painkiller - Judas Priest
1990 - The Good Son - Nick Cave
1991 - Weld - Neil Young
1992 - Bone Machine - Tom Waits
1992 - Dirt - Alice in Chains
1993 - Tom Petty's Greatest Hits - Tom Petty
1994 - Dummy - Portishead
1994 - Jar of Flies - Alice in Chains
1994 - Chocolate and Cheese - Ween
1995 - Clouds Taste Metallica - The Flaming Lips
1996 - Endtroducing - DJ Shadow
1997 - Homogenic - Bjork
1997 - Time Out of Mind - Bob Dylan
1997 - The Mollusk - Ween
1998 - Cowboy Bebop O.S.T. - The Seatbelts
1999 - The Soft Bulletin - Flaming Lips
1999 - Summerteeth - Wilco
1999 - Mule Variations - Tom Waits
1999 - I See a Darkness - Will Oldham (as Bonnie 'Prince' Billy)
2000 - The Moon and Antarctica - Modest Mouse
2000 - White Pepper - Ween
2001 - Vespertine - Bjork
2002 - Alice - Tom Waits
2002 - American IV: The Man Comes Around - Johnny Cash
2004 - Real Gone - Tom Waits
2005 - I Am a Bird Now - Antony and the Johnstons
2011 - Bad as Me - Tom Waits

The 1990's both opened and closed with very powerful years for me. So far I've been really disappointed in the 2000's. And, from 2005 to practically today, I've only found a couple albums I truly enjoy. That's my 'modern' list, rock or otherwise.

Danger Days is okay, it's an album I'll blast out in the car on the way to and from work but rarely play at home. Its four or five good tunes are spread a little too thinly for a 15-track album but still fun to scream along with as I'm driving through town. The problem for home listening is the concept's storyline only exists off the record so it doesn't hang together like The Black Parade, which lessens the effect of listening to it as whole. The Black Parade just works - it's flawed but it works, and for that I wouldn't change a thing.

When you say modern rock bands I am assuming ones post-2000 and not on PA.

I really got into the Arctic Monkey's first 3 albums.

Clever lyrics and mostly energetic and very, very catchy stuff. I was hooked.

Their 4th and current album however Suck it and See is a major disappointment IMHO.

They had the opportunity to "do a Radiohead" and go in a different direction but they just went backwards on this release.

Here's hoping their next album is different....and as good as the first 3.

The Smashing Pumpkins, Sonic Youth, Radiohead, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam, Dinosaur Jr., The Arcade Fire, Fleet Foxes, Nirvana, Black Mountain. I realize some of the bands in my list are considered Prog Related or Crossover, but whatever.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned System Of A Down yet - a great live band too.

Been a fan of them since their 3rd album or so (Bad Moon Rising), and it's been fascinating to see their growth over the years.  When they moved from SST to Enigma/Blast First (a semi-major label) for Daydream Nation, I remember how surprised I was.  They were the last band I expected to enter the mainstream, they were so noisy and uncommercial.  At the time, I think the Replacements and Husker Du were the only punk bands I'd seen go to major labels.  But boy, did Sonic Youth take that mandate and run with it.  They blazed a trail that made it possible for artsy punk-inspired music to infiltrate the mainstream (Nirvana's the obvious example: Sonic Youth convinced Geffen to sign them).

Sonic Youth continued to grow and refine their sound throughout the nineties, but honestly I haven't heard a lot in the last 10 years that impressed me.  Which are your favorites?

I love Mesmerize and Hypnotize.  After having those for a while I went and bought their debut.  Disappointing.  Too chaotic or something.  Decided to try Toxicity anyway (actually just listened to this today).  I can see why its a very highly rated album, but still not quite my thing.  But I haven't listened too it that many times, so perhaps I'll grow into it.

I agree with you - I heard Toxicity first and thought it okay but couldn't see what all the fuss was about - then I heard Mesmerize and Hypnotize and loved them.

Great to see another Sonic You fan on PA! Big smile Favourites? Daydream Nation, Dirty, Sister, Goo (In order). Were they touring around the states in the early 80's? Unless your from New York, I always thought that they didn't get that much recognition outside of the city until around Sister or so.
To be quite honest I haven't heard anything after The Washing Machine album. Embarrassed Maybe I should listen to the more recent material, but as you said, is it even that interesting?

I know them for exactly 20 years now, and lost track of them about 10 years ago. But last year I got my self their last album which I never heard and it all came back to me. Looking at their discography now I see they don't have a weak album. What a great band, it's a shame they are finished.
I always wondered if they are progressive? Definitely not straight forward, but not progressive. Great use of keys and piano though.

I started writing a post and then realised it's pointless - I love dozens of 90's/00's bands, varying from retro-psych to electro-pop-rock to folk to folktronica to feedbacking lo-fi indie.

EDIT: Now listening - LCD Soundsystem - This is HappeningCool

I like the band Local Weather Report, its a nice break to hear them on the radio in between all the other modern music. On their best days, they are a pleasure. I also like how they use a variety of male and female vocalists and sing acapella and use spoken word vocals a lot.

If I haven't mentioned Ariel Pink yet, his records are the most addictive and satisfyingly weird things I've discovered in the last 2 years. Lo fi indie rock stuff, but oh so fantastic. I often go days listening to nothing but his albums.

If I'm reading your first post correctly, you're looking for modern rock bands that are somewhat mainstream (i.e. not too "out there"), right? I suggest A Perfect Circle, VAST, and Alice in Chains.

I first discovered them during a time when I was exploring a lot of punk/hardcore albums based on the band's name and album cover.  I didn't really have a way to "look up" these bands, so I'd just go into the punk section of the store and get what looked interesting.  At first, "Bad Moon Rising" was a disappointment because it was more noise than punk, but it grew on me.  I remember a year or two later they came to my town in concert (at that time, Miami Florida), but I didn't go - it would have been around the EVOL or Sister album I think.

As far as post-Washing Machine albums go, I can't say there is anything I've heard that's as strong as Washing Machine, but honestly, they're all pretty good.  "A Thousand Leaves" is worth getting - it was the first in a series of albums that relied more on lengthy, contemplative grooves with guitar interplay rather than feedback and dissonance.  That approach eventually got a little old, but it's still pretty fresh on Leaves.

I know this is old news, but I recently just found about Thurston's and Kim's split. Unhappy I was those surprised when I read on Spin.com. Those guys were together from an extremely young age.
