Is anybody here, seen (Gabriel era) Genesis live?

I saw the 1982 reunion Six Of The Best at Milton Keynes Bowl, arranged after Gabriel's WOMAD project went tits up. It chucked it down all day, we had to put up with Jonathon King (Angry), and, by the band's own admission, the musical performance was not of the greatest standard. However, as a nostalgia fest, it worked a great deal of magic and it remains one of my all time favourite gigs.

There are one album bands here, one band with two fantastic studio releases, one of which is top 13.

Don't you believe that:
  1. Trespass
  2. Nursery Cryme
  3. Foxtrot
  4. Selling England by the pound
  5. The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway
  6. A Trick of the Tail
  7. Wind & Wuthering
Are enough to deserve to be called an amazing Prog band, specially when 2 of them are among the top 5 and the rest (Except W&W) are in the Top 100% of Prog Archives while only 3 KC are in the same list and far away?

Iván

Of course I believe ! For me Genesis is much more progressive than KC! But here almost everyone who votes for KC argues his choice saying "its the most progressive band"  . But  progressivenes itself isn't very important   feature ! It says nothing about a Music . For example, Wagner is more "prog" than Tchaikovsky but we all understand who is better composer Wink .

Wagner by a considerable distance.

Obviously Wagner by miles and miles.

OK, I just made up my mind, I'll go with Genesis. Let's see if I don't change my mind once it's too late.

^ Not criticizing your tastes, only talking about how people understand your poll rules.
There's a point where "avant-garde" and "experimental" becomes "terrible" and "pointless,"

Or was that Pink Floyd? Confused
I've got a few more days to make up my mind.

In this case, it's OK. But people who likes Genesis more but from some reason feels that King Crimson is more important and more innovative, more Prog so they vote for them instead of band they like, it's just weird for me.

I've read what Undercover Boy have in his first post (it's always the same), there's nothing about it.

Well, I just enjoy King Crimson more.  Even with all notions of innovation and influence aside, I like them better period.

I grew up listening to Peter Gabriel's voice. Thanks to my father. I discovered KC later on my own. Fripp is amazing, but I have to go with Genesis. My heart tells me so.

Iván

I pointed out something similar with regard to top 5 and Iván makes another point that a few of us feel......In that KC may be on too high a pedestal based on their body of work, especially when compared to the list he shows above......6 of the 7 Genesis albums are in the Top 100.....pretty awesome, regardless if you like them or not.....Nice nugget Iván.

KC have fewer great albums over a longer period of time but imo, Red, LTIA and Discipline seal the issue over Genesis.  Note that I have not even mentioned Court..., which, while a great album, is not as great as these three for me.  Now, MAYBE that's putting them on too high a pedestal for YOU but not for ME.   If it was about quantity (of great albums) over quality, I would have had to cast my vote for Genesis but it's not.

I agree, however, that voting for influence or because KC apparently didn't make any pop albums is a strange reason because Discipline is sorta pop Wink with lot of polyrhythms and all that and not quite a prog album in the 'classic' sense. I haven't properly investigated Beat and Three of a Perfect Pair but it would probably not be very different.

Couldn't agree more. It's all very obtuse.
