Hey, I think that's a wonderful name, but I always wonder which one of the hundreds of dogs Pavlov, errr, "processed" deserves to be remembered...

Does anybody know where the apparently stupid Blue Öyster Cult name comes from?

I'm with Spectral on 'Spock's Beard' it just doesn't sit with me well at all and interestingly although I just recently got into them that hasn't lessened the blow at all.  It's obvious it's about some parallell universe etc etc but it's still awful...

We've all got to admit Genesis is one of the best ever names!

Actually I think "Pavlov's Dog" is a good name. Waiting for another band to name themselves "Schrödinger's Cat" now.

Some Japanese bands have silly "french names"

  • Fromage (means Cheese)
  • Gérard (Old french firstname e.g. 'Gérard Depardieu')

To maidenrulez:

The problem aren't DT or Mars Volta, but the fans of those bands.

I Think that Dream Theater is a funny name. And Mars Volta too. Can I think this?

Please don't take fire for a joke, like those posts are.

Ok, Yes is a silly name. Are you happy now?

"Premiata Forneria Marconi" were named after a shop that sold sweets.

sometimes the meaning of a name can help to make you like it - i.e. understanding the thought that has gone into the name.

If I recall correctly, it was from a joke about a parallel universe where everything was the same except Spock had a beard.

Eloy... I mean, great band but what's the deal with naming yourselves after the sheep-like sub-humans from 'The Time Machine'?  Of course, if they changed their name to 'Morlock', their fan base would think they'd recruited Dorothea Peche as a vocalist..

Its so irritating with people that does not like a bands music and therefore can not be objective about them at all. I can accept that people does not like the mars volta or dream theater but i think its just stupid sl*ggering them off by saying the mars volta has the worst drummer, dream theater is the worst prog band and so on. Although you do not like a bands music you have to learn to be objective about it. Although i forexample does not like toto i surely can agree on that steve lukather is a talented guitarist even although i does not like his style i can understand why he is called good. Although there will always be people that does not manage to be objective or serious at all and just want to sl*gger off many of the more popular bands. Because i think if you think about it im sure you can find a band thats worse than yes a drummer thats worse than jon theodore and a band name that is worse than dream theater.

dude, dream theater is my favorite band, and i can admit that the name "dream theater" is on the cheesy side of the spectrum.  it takes nothing away from the music, its just a comment on their name.

My partner used to play drums in a short-lived local punk band (who never made a record). They were named "X-Prep", which is a very heavy laxative. Hardly beatable.
