Dream Theater Appreciation Thread

I'm just getting ready to set off to London to see Dream Theater and Opeth!!

Just thought I'd share that with you...

Mind you, that I would never buy such a special edition for a album that I haven't heard.

Now I see, I thought it was just the 3 CD edition...

I find the price pretty reasonable now, though I still stand that I would *almost* never buy something like that.(possible exceptions would be, I dunno, something like that by Pink Floyd, Yes, Deep Purple or the like)

As far as I'm concerned I've never seen those famed Japanese mini-LP's physically yet.... though I know they're expensive as hell....

I think that that was how much DT was selling it for on their website.  It came with a whole bunch of bells and whistles if I am not mistaken.

I'm with Terryl on this one, while I can appreciate the technicality ability of Jordan Rudess, I prefer the layers and depth that Kevin Moore gave on Images and Words and Awake.  To me, both of those albums are better than anything else by Dream Theater or any of Kevin Moore's projects after leaving.  In my mind, it's a case of the sum being better than the parts.

Don't get me wrong, I still purchased all of Dream Theater's releases after Moore left and enjoy most of them, just not quite as much as their earlier releases.

I think Awake and Images and Words are still their best two albums... but maybe that's nostalgia playing tricks on me... Erotomania is fantastic, and so is 6:00... really grabs the listener from the get-go.

All in all, I've kinda stopped listening to them as progressive... the songs are too similar for that. Instead i think of them as the greatest metal band to walk the earth... much more fufilling.
