Before I begin, apologies if this has been done before, but I searched for it and nothing came up. I am not scrolling through 178 pages of topics to find a similar threads.
Dream Theater comprises some of the most technically gifted musicians of all time. I personally consider Mike Portnoy to be one of music's all-time great drummers. Just listen to the last three minutes of Fatal Tragedy and I think you'll see where I'm going.
So, your appreciation please for the mighty Dream Theater!

I came on pretty late with Dream Theater. I resisted the whole prog metal thing for a while, and even though it's still not my favorite subgenre, I've really come to appreciate the band. Recently I've come to the conclusion that Portnoy could probably be the best rock drummer that I've ever heard (even though Porcaro is my favorite and [in my mind] could be the best). Some of his hi-hat patterns are truly amazing.
I also think Black Clouds & Silver Linings is their best release since 6DoIT.

yes, DT have been discussed on this forum before...
actually i like them very much, their latest album is growing on me pretty well, a very listenable album. I have albums from "Metropolis.." onwards, the only observation is that they always remind me of Iron Maiden - an observation not a criticism, as i love IM.
I was DT at Wembley last year and they put in a fine show, as i have said before considering the acoustics in this converted swimming pool the band sounded stunning.

I wonder what is it that you searched, that no result came. I just searched: a 13-page list of DT-related topics. Sure, not all of them are "overall appreciation threads", still, if you put the pieces together...

I find it hard to believe that out of the millions of DT threads that have cluttered up the archives for all these years, there isn't a single straightforward appreciation thread... Oh well, it can't be helped I suppose.
And I like only one DT song, and that would be Voices. It seems that they still haven't got over the whole "LOOK AT ME!" phase yet (which someone mentioned earlier), and that's what repulses me from most of their tracks.

Dream Theater has some incredibly talented musicians which you are never sure if they're going to just show-off seperately or together as a whole band.
Falling Into Infnity being my favorite album by them definitely shows what I like(or even love) about them: well-thought compositions, not-as-metal-as-they-can-be, a great balance between each member, James LaBrie's best vocals(IMO) and pretty varied in style.

Ditto.
Well, nearly...I do hate Klaus Shultze.
Of course I don't like everything ... I guess it's safe to say that there are many albums that I'd hate having to listen to. Klaus Schulze doesn't exactly fall into that category, although some of his albums would probably have a sleep inducing effect on me.

Love Dream Theater. They really opened up so many prog floodgates for me. They're the single most fan-friendly band of all time as far as releases and special goings-on. They're also one of the most talented groups ever, as each member (except present-day James LaBrie) is technically competent enough to play almost anything presented him.
It's been a long time since they've released something that does themselves justice. Nonetheless, I think you really can't deny that Dream Theater is one of the most important and influential prog bands of the newer era.

Dream Theater is awesome. From Scenes From A memory, to Black Clouds, to Octavarium they never seem to disapiont. Mike Portnoy and Jordan Rudess are one of the best at what they play. When you finally start listening its become to late...

Love them. I think now that they're getting better known suddenly they're becoming hated on several of the boards I go on (apparently they only play technical w**k ). Strange because when I first got into them most of the people who new of them loved them.
Anyawy, for me, they were the band that got me into prog in the first place

I LOVE Dream Theater! They are probably my second favorite band after "any band that Neal Morse has ever been involved in". I remember listening to Scenes From a Memory for the first time and being blown away by it, one of the big moments of my musical journey. That is still my favorite Dream Theater album, and one of my top ten albums of all time.
They are the only band I've seen live more than once, the last time being this recent Progressive Nation tour in LA, which was amazing. I also love their new album, it is one of my top three albums of theirs, alongside Scenes and Images and Words. Amazing band, just love them.

Scenes from a Memory is, imo, their best album. The ending of One Last Time ('An open door/I walk on through/into his bedroom...') always gives me goosebumps (the chords, that is)

I love Dream Theater and frankly have them to thank for getting me back into progressive rock a few years ago. . .
I enjoyed progressive to a certain extent back in the early to mid nineties, though that was mostly Genesis and Dream Theater. I lost track of the whole progressive thing for about ten or fifteen years until early 2007. At that point I was a little bored, I'd been listening to electronica for about ten years and it was waring on me. I started putting my computer on the 'shuffle all songs never listened to' setting while I was playing video games. In the process, my computer started playing 'Misunderstood' from Six Degrees which really caught my ear.
From there, I started listening to that and Scenes From a Memory, two CD's that I had picked up in cut out bins over the years. I ended up really enjoying them and bought Score from iTunes shortly thereafter. Score absolutely blew my socks off, especially the live version of Octovarium. Over the next two months I picked up the missing Dream Theater albums (Train of Thought and Octovarium) and put them in heavy rotation. From there I found Transatlantic and then Spock's Beard and The Flower Kings who have both since become some of my favorite bands, even more so than Dream Theater.
My favorite album by them is still Awake which I will always associate with the dawn of the internet. For me, I'd listen to that CD when I surfed the net back in college. Since that was my first exposure to the net, the two will forever be paired in my memory. To this day, I get a certain chill on my spine when I hear Mike Portnoy's drum riff to open that CD.
I saw them only once, supporting Images and Words and was blown away by their technical ability.
While I do appreciate Jordan Rudess' ability, i prefer Kevin Moore's keyboard work in the context of that band. My impression is that his chord work was a perfect balance to the craziness of Portnoy and Petrucci's shredding.

I just cannot get away with them. James voice just does not fit the music, in my opinion.
The music itself is way too twiddly for my liking. Some of the best musicians I agree, but put them all together and it does not mean you have a good group

Only heard four so far. I would say Still Life and Blackwater Park are equal favourites. Ghost Reveries took a little longer, but I'm getting there.
I always had a problem with growl vocals, but I'm starting to appreciate how they work so well in Opeths music. For a while I would only really listen to Damnation. I still love that album, but I guess it not really representative of what they do.
What album do you think I should try next??

To be honest, you can't go wrong with Opeth. They haven't released a bad album, but the next ones I would get are "My Arms, Your Hearse", "Watershed", and "Morningrise". Deliverance and Orchid are still worth getting, but these three are the ones I would get next (especially if you aren't a huge fan of the growling).

With my fairly recent purchase of Black Clouds and Silver Linings I have been revisiting the entire Dream Theater discography. I listened to Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence last night, and it kind of surprised me how non-metal it was. They seemed to be concentrating more on making good music as a band versus the neverending solos that seem to always get criticized.
I have to admit that I was kind of disappointed with the concept behind Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence. To be honest I just didn't get what the concept was other then apparently there were 2 to 6 people with various psychological problems which were either trying to be treated or caused as a result of the treatments. And then with the last song it just ended without really tieing any of the songs or story together or really having a worthwhile conclusion. What did I miss?

DT is one of my all time favourite bands and also one of the best i think ;)
scenes is my personal favourite second is images together with awake...
the thing i appreciate the most is petruccis playing because for me he writes the most beautiful melodies (except for his shredding ofc - wich is not only a bad thing because he often uses his incredible speed to put emphasis on the dramatic feeling of some solo for example).. at this place i again have to tell you all to listen to "an evening with john petrucci and jordan rudess" if you have not done yet :D

I borrowed a copy of An Evening With John Petrucci and Jordan Rudess from a friend, and let me tell you, it blew out any preconceptions I had about Petrucci and Rudess.
I often (stupidly) thought of Rudess as a juvenile and immature keyboardist, only really concerned with technicality. This showed another whole side and dimension to both of the masters, and is really worth a listen for big DT fans!

I'm not really a DT fan, but the thing I love about it is that it doesn't seem like anything else they've ever released.
And I KNOW I'll get murdered for saying this, especially in this thread, but DT doesn't usually emotionally connect with me, but this disc did.

Probably. It really isn't a masterpiece or even a true album, but it is definitely something cool to listen to. It isn't meant for the same type of enjoyment as Scenes From a Memory, etc. but more so as a jazzy album with some cool riffs and great musicians jamming. Personally, I love it, but if you're not into that type of thing, it definitely won't appeal to you.

This is what boggles my mind about Rudess. When he plays piano, he's an amazingly gifted musician. When he touches a keyboard he decides to use it as a substitute for his right hand and KY Jelly.

I also have An Evening with JP & JR, and I find it a nice listening, but I never really got to love that stuff. I enjoy it more as background music. And certainly, Dream Theater fans shoul take this album with precaution, for it's got about nothing to do with Dream Theater (except for Petrucci and Rudess, ofcourse). On the other hand, I really loved the Liquid Tension Experiment albums (well, not all their songs, but the good ones are really great). I guess there's a better chance for a Dream Theater fan to like LTE than an Evening with JP & JR.

This is what boggles my mind about Rudess. When he plays piano, he's an amazingly gifted musician. When he touches a keyboard he decides to use it as a substitute for his right hand and KY Jelly.
Thats exactly how I feel about it!

Not hating - I just find him to be too technically based for my ears. He's great, but I've always found his playing lacks the same genuine feeling as that of Kevin Moore (my favourite DT pianist).
Also, I just prefer all of the albums without Rudess.

I actually like what Rudess has done in Dream Theater, as someone said, insane, but cooly insane. I also liked what Moore did with Dream Theater, in a rather different way. I guess Rudess actually fits better with the rest of Dream Theater than Moore, and thus Dream Theater actually reached it's sound with the inclusion of Rudess. On the other hand, perhaps Moore, while not fitting so well as Rudess on the band style, actually helped them to make a more diverse style, and soften and slow down the sound of the band. In the end I guess both of them gave great things to the band and it's albums while they have been with the band.

Rudess is great, technically. There are things that he can do whic KM can't deliver. On the other hands, there things that KM can deliver and JR just can't.
I just happened to like what KM can give to Progressive Rock (which is the first three DT albums) much better.

They just need to calm down... it's like listening to a classroom of 8-year-olds on red cordial... and i think that's what some proggers find bad about them. I think they tried to fix this in Best of Times and Count of Tuscany on Black Clouds, but Best of Times ended up pretty damn cheesy, and Count of Tuscany, well, i don't even want to begin on what went wrong there...
Seriously, couldn't they just keep the first five minutes/last five minutes and scrap the rest?

^ That is one great thing about them - they pretty much defined the sound of progressive metal... twice! Once with Images and Words, then again with SFAM. Both of those are completely different sounds, and influenced thousands of clones. And i pretty much love every DT album. I got into them with Systematic, and i still love the awesome chunky riffs in Dark Eternal and Constant Motion. But I wasn't too happy with Black Clouds.. especially since i paid $300 for it! It just wasn't the fufilling meal every other album had been...

-------------

I think Awake and Images and Words are still their best two albums... but maybe that's nostalgia playing tricks on me... Erotomania is fantastic, and so is 6:00... really grabs the listener from the get-go.
All in all, I've kinda stopped listening to them as progressive... the songs are too similar for that. Instead i think of them as the greatest metal band to walk the earth... much more fufilling.

Awake and I&W are the only two DT albums that I consider really special to me anymore - The metal flavour after they lost K. Moore doesn't really do anything for me unfortunately.

I'm with Terryl on this one, while I can appreciate the technicality ability of Jordan Rudess, I prefer the layers and depth that Kevin Moore gave on Images and Words and Awake. To me, both of those albums are better than anything else by Dream Theater or any of Kevin Moore's projects after leaving. In my mind, it's a case of the sum being better than the parts.
Don't get me wrong, I still purchased all of Dream Theater's releases after Moore left and enjoy most of them, just not quite as much as their earlier releases.

Unexpect and Big Elf. Unexpect were kind of prog death metal, with some folky leanings courtesy of a violinist. Quite a starnge mix of styles. Their sound wasn't too good, so it was hard to pick out some of the musics complexities, but they were 'interesting' shall we say. Big Elf (think I've heard of them)had a hard rock and slight blues element, with plenty of hammond and some mellotron. They sounded very good.
Did Dweezil Zappa guest on the US leg of this tour??

I saw Dream Theater at the Manchester Apollo on Friday night - DT were amazing, especially the encore - The Count of Tuscany, excellent in the extreme.
The Opeth bit was excellent and it was amusing to see the dick heads in the mosh-pit fighting in a kind of death-metal rugby scrum - just what is that all about !!!!
Big Elf were also worth listening to - the opening band were terrible !!!!!

^ I was at this gig too (hi Rob!) and he is right, DT absolutely smoked - fantastic performance, wonderful sound mix too. Easily the best I've seen from the band live.
Unlike Rob, I wasn't in the mosh pit .
To hear Sacrificed Sons, a real favourite of mine, was awesome. The new stuff rocked big time and Petrucci's work during Count Of Tuscany was sublime. What a surprise to hear Dance Of Eternity too . The band's tightness during this piece was simply staggering.
Before the gig I had never heard a note of Opeth. I was very impressed indeed, and that's another band to go on the "to get" list. I preferred the singing to the growling though..........
