Exactly. JROCHA, with all respect . . . you should cool down a bit. If you disagree with those of us who think the song is PF carbon copy, go ahead and disagree, but saying things like, "Everyone should shut up" is very unbecoming of you, my good man. I have never complained about an artist being influenced by another artist, but when they mimic an already existing song almost exactly, it bothers me. It bothers me because I know Steve Wilson can do better than this, and it also bothers me because I was looking forward to this record before hearing this track, and now based on what I hear, it seems to be quite unoriginal. I am a Porcupine Tree fan. One of the biggest fans, in my opinion. I'm not just cutting down a band I didn't like in the first place; I'm fretting over a band I love taking the easy road and not composing from scratch. I'm sorry if that upsets you, but I'm just being honest, and I would never tell you to "shut up" for simply having opinion that differs from mine.

Actually, PT's fanbase, being much smaller than that of PF, and composed mostly of people like us who can afford a computer, is richer than that of PF, even though because of their age probably their fans already have better jobs... it's really a death match. Maybe PF is the rich man's PT, or PT the middle-class man's PF, or maybe there's socialism in their music after all. |
Oh T, I love it when you miss the point. <3

Yes i felt the same way about the track, very repetitive and boring |
It's the repetition that gets to me, I guess that's why it worked so well in the album preview.

Hyperlinks are not difficult! Yet you seem never to do them!
Is that Steve singing? WTF happened to his voice? And does anybody else think the chorus sounds like exactly TMV? Otherwise, it's pretty boring.

The new single from the new Porcupine Tree album?
My opinion: Meh.
Sounds a lot like "Stars Die". But, I think all Porcupine Tree records are worth checking out. On the first impression, it sounds like Mr. Wilson knocked this one off in his sleep.

P0mt3 I don't know why you're freaking out. You do realize that PT has been trying to sound like PF since they started. I mean come on.

I doubt I'll ever grow to like it.
As soon as I heard the "Dogs" guitar and the cheesey lyrics based on song titles - an idea blatantly taken from Barclay James Harvest's "Titles" on Time Honoured Ghosts", and the vocals which sound like BJH's, I didn't want to hear any more.
I don't know why, I just felt really annoyed to hear a song with other people's ideas so starkly presented - like that awful Madonna song that starts with the ABBA sample, or Vanilla Ice using the Queen/Bowie sample.
I'll give the album a listen, as it is so keenly anticipated - but I've always been disappointed with PTs material generally. What I've heard is too poppy and not at all Prog.

Remember everyone, Time Flies is listed on the LP at over 10 minutes (If I'm correct) and the single is the 5 minute radio edit.
Thus, there is 5 minutes of the song we don't hear... the section not appropriate for the single perhaps?
Anyway, I'll judge the full album when I get it.

I dont think one song can excite or disappoint me. I need the whole package... .
PT has PF influence, no question but its not clone, and neither a rip-off. At the same time this song is a bit un PT without much twists. But without the whole CD its not a fair judgement yet. I am sure surprises are waiting...

I dont care for it much, I preferred 'time flies' when it was on the album sampler. ;)
We'll see, it's probably alot better in the context of the 55 minute track.

Just to point out the similarities between this and 'Dogs': http://home.no/johan-af/ptpf.mp3
The guitar strumming patterns are not exactly alike, but very similar. Also note the synth thingy in the background.

I regard Animals as being right up there as Floyd's greatest moments. I also love Wilson & PT, but the comparisons to Animals are so obvious they barely need repeating by me. Having said that, listening to it now, I'm really enjoying it. I LOVE reinterpretations of classics by great bands I will definitely get the new LP - I would have done anyway.

Oh, I'm sorry, am I late for something? I didn't realize I couldn't just have an honest opinion of a musical piece without being accuse of being a bandwagon jumper.
As to what I'm accusing; absolutely. I think it's obvious that this is an inspiration-less song ripped straight off of Waters and Gilmours' backs. Wilson hasn't done something this blatant since 'Sky Moves Sideways'.
I'm a huge Porcupine Tree fan, and I care about the band's originality. I'm not just trying to slam them without cause. I will still by the album and all; I just hope the rest of the tracks are much more unique.
|
I don't think The Sky Moves Sideways is copying anything from Floyd whatsoever, nor do I think so for Time Flies. It's incidental that things sound somewhat similar. (Time Flies sounds nothing like Dogs to me by the way, neither in the lyrics or music, and only somewhat reminds me of Sheep but the similarity is nothing but incidental).
I've always been irritated by comparisons to Floyd, mainly because I think The Sky Moves Sideways and Up the Downstair have all the spacey elements of classic Floyd, but do everything better to my ears. Nothing Pink Floyd ever did as an album pleases me as much as The Sky Moves Sideways.
|
Well, if you yourself can't hear the similarities much, then of course I see where you're coming from. I just wanted to make sure that you were aware that I wasn't simply comparing them to Floyd because everybody else does it; I truly do believe this is a Dogs/Sheep clone. In all actuality, there was only one other instance when this closeness between the two bands was as obvious, and that was "The Sky Moves Sideways". Even the track layout mimics 'Wish You Were Here'. But on the whole, I have never considered PT a PF 'clone' before, so this is actually a first for me. I don't WANT them to be a clone of anybody else, but it's just how I honestly feel about this track. In the end, though, it's not that big of a deal. I'm still going to buy the album and enjoy it, but I do hope the other tracks on the album sound more original.
