If I enjoy something from Metal, or at least Prog Metal, it should be the Classic Prog Metal, even though I only have 3 DT albums, some Symphony X stuff I heard and Queensryche are a bit to my apeal.

I dunno, I would still class GG and VDGG as part of the classic prog movement. Just like Fernando Sor was part of the Classical Music movement. I think all the extreme prog metal bands from that kind of era (i.e. Cynic, Death, Atheist, Pestilence) were part of the classic prog metal movement, despite only really having a cult following. But then again it's all up for debate.

classic progressive metal = everything made from 88 to 95, which are usually the milestones of the genre
I.E.: Control and Resistance, Nothingface, Mindcrime, Perfect Symmetry, Images and Words, Focus, everything from Atheist, etcetcetc.

Spinning Fates Warning - Perfect Symmetry right now, such a great album I hardly listen to anymore for some reason.
Dream Theater were obviously big fans of it too.

You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.

I´d say Cynic is more on the extreme side of progressive metal. I´m not sure? but I think Mandrakeroot meant this thread to be for bands like Dream Theater and Fates Warning. The more classic definition of progressive metal.

Cynic's Focus is such a legendary album, never gets old. I think that could be called classic prog metal.

Michael Romeo, Vitaly kuprij and Mike Portnoy as three of my all time preferred musicians. And they are part of Prog Metal movement!

My latest reviews concern Prog Metal albums (or related) and I think that the Classic Prog Metal is a genre little understood, though very popular.
Have you wanted to start a healthy debate? ( )
