Cynic's Focus is such a legendary album, never gets old. I think that could be called classic prog metal.

^ agreed. I think that both Watchtower and Cynic made classic albums, but I don't think that they could really be called "Classic Prog Metal". For that they were a little too experimental ... and not popular enough. A bit like Gentle Giant and Van der Graaf Generator in the classic prog movement, compared to Yes and Genesis.

classic progressive metal = everything made from 88 to 95, which are usually the milestones of the genre I.E.: Control and Resistance, Nothingface, Mindcrime, Perfect Symmetry, Images and Words, Focus, everything from Atheist, etcetcetc. -------------

I dunno, I would still class GG and VDGG as part of the classic prog movement. Just like Fernando Sor was part of the Classical Music movement. I think all the extreme prog metal bands from that kind of era (i.e. Cynic, Death, Atheist, Pestilence) were part of the classic prog metal movement, despite only really having a cult following. If I enjoy something from Metal, or at least Prog Metal, it should be the Classic Prog Metal, even though I only have 3 DT albums, some Symphony X stuff I heard and Queensryche are a bit to my apeal. |

Cynic = not so amazing. it sounds dated and crappy.
Classic metal is kind of tame so its not really my style but Its not bad either. I know a lot of people that think that 70's and 80's metal are the best thing ever but unfortuntaley its not for me.

Classic metal Prog ... With this definition I would say all that Prog Metal is not Extreme Prog Metal or Post Metal...
I believe that in a serious debate also bands such as Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, Rush, Rainbow, Cacophony, Malmsteen, Magnum, Asia ('80's production), Warlord, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Black Sabbath... So... All those who have created the foundations of Prog Metal should be included, just for historical completeness.
P.s.: I love the Cynic... Great band... But they are Extreme Prog Metal (Death Jazz Metal... A definition that I love, referring to their music). -------------

Well... 'Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son' is a true all time Prog Metal masterpiece as Dio/ Powell Rainbow Era's albums, Warlord 'Deliver Us' album (I have 'The Best Of Warlord' i.e. 'Deliver Us'+ bonus), Cacophony 'Speed Metal symphony', Magnum 'Vintage Magnum', Rush's 70's albums (Well... First...?!?) and Metallica '...and Justice For All'! -------------

Classic prog metal for me is Images and Words, Perfect Symmetry/Parallels and Rage For Order/Operation. In my mind, almost nothing can compete these gems. Bands that came out a bit later like Symphony X and Shadow Gallery are worthy successors of the three 'big ones'... |

Back in the 1970s (here comes the old git again) there were no real sub-genres of metal. Just heavy rock (which was quickly christened heavy metal) and hard rock, with a lot of blurring of the edges between the two.
Today, although I've read all the definitions on PA, I couldn't even truly tell which genres of metal I like more than others. I know the basics like thrash, black and death but after that I get lost. My son understands them all but he's only 17 and naturally at that age a committed fanboy of Megadeth, Metallica and SOaD and an enthusiastic Kerrang! reader.
All I know is I love modern metal just as much as the old stuff: Orange Goblin, Spiritual Beggars, System of a Down, KSE, etc, etc. But I find it hard to pick up on just how progressive any of the bands I like are - I just like them.
The older I get the less I'm able to categorise the modern stuff I like - without PA and El Dingo Jnr I'd probably struggle to keep up at all. Guess if I follow the thread I might learn something ------------- It's not that I can't find worth in anything, it's just that I can't find worth in enough. |

el dingo: All true what you say. But without the band that I have mentioned (and other) Prog Metal probably would not be born. Or maybe yes...
Is true, then, that Prog Metal is a recent definition and that Prog Metal is a musical genre that is not totally clear in their boundaries... And we can not do anything. Believe me... I know musicians that indicate the groups that I mentioned (with Hawkwind and Eloy) as Prog Metal bands!

Is true, however, that some bands are considered the fathers of Prog Metal. And, although I'm totally agree with you, we can not forget these bands in our debates and our discographies.
I'm sharing the Classic Prog CDs from the Prog Metal CDs. And the CDs of the fathers of Prog Metal (also Prog related, not only Heavy Prog) I put them in Prog Metal part of my CDs collection. Even just for gratitude towards them!

If you go back even further, it can get even more confusing. I'm no expert, but some journalists have claimed that in 1964 the riff to The Kinks' You Really Got Me founded Heavy Metal. Others claim it originated from blues jams and heavy chording therein. Some say Blue Cheer (who I've never heard) were the first heavy band. Others say that Free's manager suggested they called themselves The Heavy Metal Kids and they refused because they wanted to be a pure blues band - there was a band of that name later btw, and IMO they were sh*te.
As much as I love metal (and I do) I still think Spinal Tap got it right ------------- It's not that I can't find worth in anything, it's just that I can't find worth in enough. |

What you wrote is all true (but I know of Spinal Tap) and reflects the collective thinking.
Is true, also, that almost all the European Power Metal basnds have written at least one song Prog Metal (Judas Priest and Saxon have debuted with two Prog albums).
In these days I'm rediscovering great Prog Metal bands like Warlord, Cacophony, Narnia, Elegy, Shadow Of Steel, Elvenking, Excelsis... All arenot present in PA, for one reason or another. And I must be honest... How musical diversity present Prog Metal ... -------------

We did have Unleashed in the East in our collection, but my dear hubby somehow managed to lose it... No big deal, though, since it's very easy to find even in mainstream music stores.

Well... Judas Priest... From 'Rocka Rolla' to 'Unleash In The East'... Well they are really Prog.
But also this is a great Prog album:
 Saxon: 'Saxon' (their debut album)
...But... They are between the father albums of Prog Metal... Not Prog Metal albums... Yes... Heavy Prog albums!!!
And all are great Heavy Prog albums!!! -------------

When you're as old as me you realise Maiden ARE classic metal (how prog is an open question): the natural successors to Sabbath, in a way.
I'm deciding what sort of fit to have 'cos I'm flying to Spain on Monday and Bruce Dickinson might just be the pilot. Hope I don't end up like "Eddie"... ------------- It's not that I can't find worth in anything, it's just that I can't find worth in enough. |

Yeah - understand that only too well. Some of my friends would probably say Iron Who? to this day.
They were the best of the NWOBHM bands by a mile - I was lucky enough to see them at the legendary Ruskin pub on Wanstead Flats, East London, in the very early days.
btw due solely to the wonders of PA I've discovered I'm eight years older than you, three years older than Raff and feeling...old ------------- It's not that I can't find worth in anything, it's just that I can't find worth in enough. |

In 2000 (if I think correctly the year... Sorry) I attended a concert of Symphony X with Dyslesia as opening act. Two great Prog Metal band. I am sincere: I am pleased to Dyslesia more... Dyslesia are more Power Prog Metal in the vein of Elegy... One other band that I have not yet understood because this is not in PA (as the same Dyslesia)! -------------
