Seriously enjoying Leprous' Tall Poppy Syndrome right now, which has elements of tech/extreme. I recommend them highly- nice and inventive, and professional enough for it all to seem organic.

i was about to write about CORONER, then i saw your post. Coroner is one of the bands got me into technical and prog tastes in my highschool years. Though it's rare, I still listen them. And do you know, they will play at Hellfest 2011

Psychotic Waltz is a band I just never listened to, even though it was one of the first prog metal bands I've heard of. I've gotten into them recently. I must agree they are brilliant!

Thanks i will try Psychofagist
I have to admit not having heard much tech extreme i was in the dark about this genre, but Psychotic waltz are now one of my favourite prog metal bands - already heard first 2 albums and loved every moment. i heard they disbanded which is a tragedy.
"Mosquito" is a great album too! I only discovered this band last night thx to this thread and cant believe they had somehow evaded me all this time.
Just thanks guys, is all I can say for opening my eyes and ears to this awesome band. Huge mega star reviews coming soon, believe me. Edited by AtomicCrimsonRush - August 09 2010 at 22:26 |

aside from Psychotic Waltz (who are in their own league) my favorites of that list are Psychofagist- utterly insane free-jazz post hardcore tech metal... just great! Latest album has some sax freakouts a la Zorn. Psyopus is on another level also, just way over the top with the insanity and shredding and bizarro riffs. The vocals may put some off though. The other bands are decent but fairly standard actually. |

Yep, Psychotic Waltz are without peer imo, just stellar music with excellent lyrics, spine-tingling leads and real emotional content... They aren't extreme in the least but certainly very technical- well at least on those first two albums.... One of my all-time faves. Try the followup band that the singer is in "Deadsoul Tribe"- there are some reminiscent moments musically, but it's a slightly different animal. I heard that some of the members of Psychotic Waltz were writing a new album.... who knows what will come of it... not even sure if Buddy Lackey is involved or not...
so on the recommendation tip, check out the band Ingenium... their album "2nd sun in the eclipse" just pisses all over most technical metal... It was never officially released but there are of course ways of finding it... well worth the hunt. http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=25882 figures that I am the only one who has rated it... an obscure gem... |

^ They are definitely great, although calling them tech/extreme is a bit of a stretch IMO.

I've seen a lot of Dan Swano get mentioned. I've been getting into his music over the past year, and I really love the Moontower album, as well as Edge Of Sanity and his brothers project Pan.Thy.Monium

I see you mention Condemned by Confessor in the list. Iīve been listening to that one a lot this last week. Iīve actually written a review for Metal Music Archives ( http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/) of that album, just havenīt posted it yet.
!!! I just realized that Confessor is not on PA!!! Iīve added them to the Prog metal chart for evaluation.
Hereīs my review if anyone should be interested ( oh and donīt get bothered by the html tags if they show):
<B>Confessor</B> - <i>Condemned</i>
<i>Condemned</i> is the debut full-length studio album by American doom metal act <B>Confessor</B>. The album was released in October 1991 by <B>Earache Records</B>. The original album contained 9 tracks but thereīs a Japanese version available with 3 additional bonus tracks.
The music on the album is a very unusual kind of doom metal. First of all the tempo isnīt snail tempo slow. Itīs still brick heavy music but the tempo is mostly kept in slow- to mid pace. Secondly the music is quite technical compared to most other releases in the genre. Especially the drumming stands out as very busy and skillfully played, but the rest of the music is also rather intricate. Calling the music on <i>Condemned</i> progressive or technical doom metal wouldnīt be far off the mark. To top it all off thereīs the distinct high pitched vocal delivery by <B>Scott Jeffreys</B>. He is the kind of singer that I usually associate with progressive rock/ metal. Iīm reminded a bit of <B>Cedric Bixler-Zavala</B> from <B>The Mars Volta</B>. While <B>Scott Jeffreys</B> is a skilled vocalist, his vocal lines are kind of non-melodic and sometimes even close to atonal to my ears, and it will be a challenge to some, if they can digest them. If a bit more melody and variation had been put into the vocals, this album could have been even greater than it already is. Another unusual feature on a doom metal album is that the songs are not especially long. Most are about 4 minutes long but thatīs only a good thing IMO. Thereīs not a dull moment in sight. <B>Confessor</B> are not the kind of band that play their riffs on repeat for several minutes. On the other hand some might miss gloomy atmosphere and slow building majestic doom climaxes. The music on <i>Condemned</i> has a more desperate sound to it instead. Many of the riffs on the album are thrash metal inspired but the drums make sure the pace is kept slow enough for this to be called a doom metal album.
The production lacks a bit of warmth if you ask me, but itīs still powerful and suits the music well.
<i>Condemned</i> is one of the most unique doom metal albums out there. Not only because the music on the album is unusually technical for the genre but also because of the distinct high pitched vocal delivery by <B>Scott Jeffreys</B>. If you want to challenge yourself to some technical/ progressive doom metal, <i>Condemned</i> is a great place to start. A 4 star rating is fully deserved. Just beware that <B>Confessor</B> are sure to be an aquired taste.

I know they "had" Piggy, but only in spirit, as those were pre-recorded demo tracks.... he really wasn't there to finetune the tunes.... that's what I mean.

all Voivod's recorded material up to 'Infini' feature Piggy on guitar. And I love their last two albums 'Quatorze' (as it should be spelled ) and 'Infini', more rock than metal but very enjoyable. Also, the Eric Forrest era is very good and should be of interest to fans of tech/extreme prog metal, especially Negatron.

you're right, Voivod should be in there. I would say Nothingface is their crowning achievement.... most proggy, most technical.... my fave... but I like everything they have done except for the last two or three... It's just not the same without Piggy. I am saddened that I never saw them with him... OR... even got a chance to see them with Daniel Mongrain of Martyr on guitars!!!!
