I chose the last option. Because that's what I reply, if I don't say my current favourite(s).

I don't have a 'favourite' band but if pushed for an answer I tell them Van der Graaf Generator. They then usually wish that they had never asked.

Do 'The Stanley' otherwise I'll thrash you with some rhubarb.

"You realize that your favorite band is waaaay to famous so you blurt out something else to show that you're more prog than everyone....a sort of dominance"
anonymous popster 1: "jimmy, what is your favorite band?"
me: (aside to myself)...oh no, they'll think I like Abacab if I say Genesis, sh*t what do I do? I must take this time to assert my proggness. Ah let's see here....Van der Graaf? nah thats no good. Quella Vecchia Locanda? no way too hard to pronounce. Balletto di Bronzo?...now there's a mouthful. Man, this is a toughy...

1 Chronicles 13:7-9
Then David and all Israel played music before God with all their might, with singing, on harps, on stringed instruments, on tambourines, on cymbals, and with trumpets.

"I like too much stuff, from too many genres"
true, since i got into prog my musical taste has expanded significantly - i got into many genres i haven't heard before. each of them has their own uniqueness and not all are comparable.
as for the question i'd probably say 'Dream Theater', as they're the most famous among my favourites. if i say another name, most people probably wouldn't know

No one ever asks -- I think that's the sort of concern people have when younger: favourite this, favourite that.
If someone did ask, I'd have to honestly say that I don't really have a fave -- I like too much stuff, from too many genres, to pick just one.
Oh okay then -- WILCO!
