I voted other with the great Tom Waits in mind. Love the poetic phrasings and the music always gets me, but the smoke and alcohol driven voice is not my cup of tea in this case.

you know very little of Peter Hammill if you think he only yells and whispers. he can sing absolutely beautifully if needed. I recommend to listen to "This Side of the Looking Glass" from his album "Over", for example |

at the stage this thing is.. I'd put Peter Gabriel on the list, he's not exactly an opera singer.

If Brian May's voice is bad I don't know who has good voice.

Peter Hammil. The man only yells and whispers. That's not singing. Yet somehow it fits perfectly with the music he and VDGG play.

Hogarth definitely is a love or hate man. for me it is hate. maybe he is technically a better singer than Fish, but he can't shine a candle to him because of his lack of expression. with Fish gone Marillion completely lost that little bit of interest I had in them (I was never a big fan though)

Because Hogarth is in the list! Anyway...
If you really think he can't sing with emotion, try these songs:
"Living With The Big Lie"
"Neverland"
"This Strange Engine"
"The Party"
"Three Minute Boy"
... Hell, listen to any of his songs!

What was that about 'art in the eye of the beholder'...... I sometimes wonder because of my eventual acceptance of Mr Lee's er em voice, whether with familiarity my brain was turning off the pain receptors to avoid further harm...... |

Oddly enough I really like her half-an-octave range (or less), husky voice on Feels Good To Me, but thinks she stinks on the Bruford Rock Goes To College DVD doing the same songs. |

Geddy Lee isn't on this poll because (obviously) he is a great singer whom all should bow down before and listen to Rush constantly! At least thats what I do. |
