I'm going to have to go with Gates of Delirium. Perhaps because it was the one I heard first and I just like it more, or the fact it just has more energy. CTTE is absoutely amazing, but Gates of Delirium is just better.

This is a pretty hard comparison to make. Keep in mind that between the two albums at least 2 years had passed, where the band went through a very tough time. ie from top of the world with CTTE; then Bruford leaves - in comes White; the harsh criticism of TFTO; Wakeman's departure etc, replaced by Moraz etc - one big roller coaster ride.
In CTTE Yes probably reached their first summit. The sound engineering / production and arrangement are faultless.It also has a more serene vibe. I can't say the same for Relayer, the whole album sounds tormented and cold at times but then again it's much more exciting. In terms of sheer dynamics I'd go for Gates. Mind you "To be over" is the really brilliant track on that album that IMO captures the true spirit of Yes.

You can't say much more about it, but CTTE is just more beautiful to me. Since I'm also one of the few who get Jon Anderson's lyrics... I found the meaning lyrically behind this more satisfying and definitely more poignant. Gates is a fantastic piece, but it just doesn't match CTTE in passion.

Although I do love Gates, I think I'm going to have to play it safe and
vote CTTE. As so many others have said, its my first, its a part of
me.

Gates is no doubt a prog classic, but to dismiss Close to the Edge is
to dismiss one of the paramount songs of the past 50 years. Yes has
never been as "Yes" as they were on CTTE. It sounds stupid as hell to
say stuff like that, but there's no other way I can describe it ;) .

Close to the Edge is the finest piece of prog written and Gates is not too far behind.But what a choice to make I love them both and am glad it is only between these two.

Both of them are awesome, and I can play both on bass, (okay, so maybe not the jam section of Gates...but the "pre-war" song bit ("bit" being 8 minutes long)).

I can never keep track of who's drumming for Yes... Bruford was on CTTE, but who was on Relayer?
I agree with the comment on the fresness of CTTE, it really is a fresh
album. Ach, I can't decide! I really like Moraz's playing better on
Gates.

Must be two best albums from Yes. I've had Relayer longer but/and CTTE has
fresh factor to me. CTTE got me right away when Relayer took few
listens. I say CTTE.
Same goes with those epics too. They go quite much hand-in-hand with albums.

Good poll SN, two worthy adversaries!
"Close to the edge" for me, I feel it is the perfect prog track. I agree with Bob-the-rep that the Yessongs version is the finest, proably because it's the one I got to know the song by.
"Gates of delerium" is of course excellent, and would beat pretty much any other track.

I'm not questioning the musical abilities of Moraz, it is just that I get used to a deteminate Yes sound and the one on Relayer is not my cup of tea. That's all.

Wakeman is a great traditional soloist, but Moraz
with his experience with the swiss ballet can do
anything. Dont fool yourself when Jon and Vangelis
couldnt get it right that was a blessing. Patrick is
much more talented here setting soundscapes and
atmospheres, something Rick failed at terribly on
TFTO. This is as good as they got!
