It wasn't the departure of Doug Ferguson alone what changed their style; it was the inclusion of Richard Sinclair that gave the band another direction. A direction I really enjoy as much as the previous line up, btw! Wink

In other words, the departure of a non-songwriting member and the arrival of an active songwriter will definitely change the style of a band!

OK, you can get Nude as you're already planning to, but you may also enjoy Rajaz or Nod and a Wink.

Their 80's stuff might be weaker than their earlier and later work, but I think it's better than most of the 80's works of other prog greats!

Listened to one song from both Rajaz and Nod & a Wink, and I will get both for sure, after Nude.

I partly agree with camel appeal... their '80's stuff are indeed boring Dead in fact, I'd say even those three you mentioned before are enough for a serious prog collection Wink! They simply lost their magic after Moonmadness, probably due to departure of Doug Ferguson... I really don't understand one man, even an insignificant one in songwriting, can change the style so much.

Nevertheless, I recommend you to have a look at these albums, they are not great IMHO, but I still enjoy them...
self titled debut: especially important to track down the development of this impoırtant band
Harbour of Tears: after a series of dull albums throught the '80's, this is a great refreshment! the style is completely different, and even the music hardly qualifies as "Camel", but a very decent modern times prog album...
Rajaz: Even better than the previous one! Shows close approaching to their classic style... I think it would qualify one of the "prog re-awakening" albums of '99...
Nod and a Wink: I sometimes get bored listening to this (no wonder, I haven't listened to it for over a year!) but the music is by no means bad... "different" at the very best...
Rain Dances: If Moonmadness is the last great Camel album (ideas vary, as you all know Wink!), this one is the last "good" one before Harbour in my book.

P.S. I just checked to confirm Ferguson's name from the band's homepage, and found out what I have just written matches up with the original info given for the band! Even the representative albums, which are determined automatically by ratings!!! check it out: http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_BAND.asp?band_id=50
in Turkish we have a saying which roughly translates: Way of reason is one LOL!
Listen to Turkish psych/prog; you won't regret:
Baris Manco,Erkin Koray,Cem Karaca,Mogollar,3 Hürel,Selda,Edip Akbayram,Fikret Kizilok,Ersen (and Dadaslar) (but stick with the '70's, and 'early 80's!)

Mirage, Snow Goose and Moonmadness are classic.

Darkshade - don't waste a minute! Buy A Nod And A Wink - some regard this is their return to "roots".

I've heard that Latimer, Ward and Ferguson made a new material lately. What a surprise! I can't wait to listen to it.
And hats off to Pete Bardens...Unhappy RiP.

Listening to The Snow Goose as I type... what a great album!

New material from the original guys?  This is great news!!!  Where did you hear that?

I've heard this from Camelproductions.

I think Camel's music is great but I have to be in a really laid back mood to listen to it.  Bald Jean describes it as  "harmless". Not wrong there - I prefer my music with a little more sonic resonance.

I don't think I've ever been bored by Camel. I can listen to Moonmadness, The Snow Goose, or Rain Dances for days on end and not get tired. Not to mention that their discography goes on for decades without releasing (in my opinion) a single truly weak album. Even the later releases (Rajaz and Dust and Dreams being my personal favorties) stand just as strong as their most popular early albums.

I used to like them, but they didn't stand the test of time with me. today they simply bore me. in lack of a better term it is probably because they are too "harmless"

listening to the debut, i realize the band had a great deal of influence on early metal (NWOBHM moreso) and power metal. a lot of the first album reminds me of the first Maiden album.

Sometimes they can be boring, but otherwise they're cool.

Camel are definitely one of my favorite classic Prog bands. A Live Record is a masterpiece, just check out my review for it. The performance of The Snow Goose is breathtaking and so emotional.

As I type I'm listening to Harbour of Tears. Good stuff, and I've never heard a note of it on the radio. Ever. What a shame that is.

I stumbled across Camel back in 2003 when I picked up a copy of Progression magazine. Then I came across this site, and was exposed to more of their music. I'm slowly amassing their entire discography.

It's too bad I didn't discover them earlier, but better late than never. Great band, and very underrated.
Bring me my broadsword, and clear understanding.

Definitely yes, if you like its predecessors, "Dust And Dreams", "Harbour of Tears" and "Rajaz".

Before starting his current solo Dark Side tour Roger Waters looked for a lead guitarist of sufficient stature and ability to play Gilmour's parts in his many Floyd tunes. He met with Andy Lattimer, because not only was he a fan of Camel (well as much of a fan as WATERS could be of anything I shoud say), but he knew Andy could fill-in without skipping a beat. Andy's voice unfortunately was incompatible with many of the high-register Gilmour vocals and so both Lattimer and Waters realized disappointly that Andy was not well-suited.

Dave Kilminster (brother of Lemmy) filled the role of lead guitarist for this tour.

Just as aside. Yes I love CamelClap (Snow Goose my fave), and yes I will be seeing Roger Waters tomorrow night in MontrealBig smile

Latimer playing some Floyd?  That would have been amazing!!!
Bell Center tomorrow night???

This band are Premier League without doubt; in fact, my favourite band. Certif1ied has hit the nail on the head as to why some rubbish them: they're not pretentious. Exactly the same reason some rubbish my second favourite band, Mostly Autumn, in fact.

Actually, I'd get their "A Live Record" next. Once you've heard them live, you can't be in any doubt as to their talent.

Then try Nude, which is another brilliant concept album loosely based on the life of Lieutenant Hiroo Onoda (hence Nude), a Japanese soldier who fought on for 28 years after 1945. It's the best album from their 80s output.

Enjoy them!

Erik, did you see them in Rotterdam around 82/83? Can't remember the year. Was in the Doelen.
