same here. I'm fifteen and mom and dad's music defnitely turned me own to prog. mom's a big tull and tangerine dream fan, and dad loves all the old stuff (genesis, yes, king crimson, supertramp, rush, floyd). Out of those i only really listen to floyd and a little tangerine dream. Still a metalhead at heart though (Ive been listening to it since I was 7)

Does this poll show prog-rock is becoming much more popular with young people? Or does it show that ages 15-20 have a lot of time on their hands and need to get lives? I wonder which, no offense, as I am in this group too.

I'm 15 and I think I was in prog since I was a baby when my father played Genesis on the CD player, I can remember !!

Seriously though, don't you think the great majority of the 14 - 25 set came here via metal/prog metal? That's just what I think I see -- there was no prejudice toward the music intended, but I think that what many of the younger members here call "prog," I (and many other older prog fans) would call metal.
In general, the two rock forms (and their fans) were almost diametrically opposed, when I was a young fellow.... |
I'd say 50/50. Most of the Velvet Crew are not the biggest metal fans. A couple are even stuck in the 70's  Most close minded metal fans leave as newbies and don't make it far. I found this place via metal myself (searching for "Six Degrees...") but I didn't come here for metal only(I didn't even know much prog metal outside of DT).

Every new generation seems to discover Floyd and Zeppelin, but classic Yes? Genesis? Gentle Giant? VDGG? Magma?

There are so few young prog fans, actually  Keep in mind that this is an international forum, and by worldwide standards there's very few young prog fans. Especially in comparison to punk or hip hop. Prog is about as uncool as it gets, but the thing is that we(me at least  ) Don't give a sh*t in the least if we're the only prog fans 10 miles around. NO ONE in ,my school likes or even knows prog. Oh wait, I;ve seen a Yes and a Tool shirt once... over the course of five years. There's a lot of Pink Floyd fans around, but very few if any know other prog. The closest prog fan I know is King Of Siam(30 miles or so from my town). And please quit blaming everything on metal.

I'm not a HUGE fan of prog anymore at 21, but about a couple years ago it was my favorite genre. Lately, I've been into what most call Minimalism, Ambient, Avant Garde, Classical Electronica (or some nonsense like that), Glitch, etc, etc..... Basically, music influenced by FLUXUS, Classical, Jazz, and art-influenced Electronica (not that dance crap). :) I think Prog will eventually bleed into such artful music when it reaches it's next step. Maybe SW will help bring it to the next step with another release. I hope he is done with the Pop+Prog thing. Of course, for much lighter music, Prog (and any other type of music besides the garbage corporate BS like most Hip-POP, boring Rock, etc..) is always nice to play, even some more intelligent Pop sometimes (despite over-the-top production with waveforms being cut). :D

I'm 19, I think you might want to consider the likely age to post on a messageboard for the final scientific analysis of this poll. The average messageboard member is 15-20 making them a majority in any forum.

i'm 16. wow, a lot of other 15-20's! i have friends who listen to bands like pink floyd and they've never even heard of 'prog'. it's just good music basically. hopefully there'll be a prog rennaissance in the next 5 years with so many young listeners of it.

I wouldn't read too much into one post from one member, or the use of one particular word that can be interpreted in differing senses. (I also suspect that that person's mother tongue may not be English.)
Using only text to communicate with strangers can and does easily lead to many misunderstandings. For example, sarcasm, as in your opening "I also love how" does not come across clearly in type. A non-native English speaker could readily think that you really meant "love," instead of your (implied) "I am irritated by."
