Blackmore is my favourite guitarist on the poll, and he is no shredder ...

I hate shredders ... if you asked me which shredder was the most annoying I'd have to say Malmsteen followed closely by Petrucci ...

"No" replies the unhumbled optimist "You are only the present."

Brent Allman and Michael Romeo are extremly good guitarists, as all the others on that list. I still think they have a lack of personality and originality.
I would not say shread has become a genre of its own as the styles of the shread-guitarist wary a lot from each guitaist. You can listen to Marty Friedmans hawaian style, Vais weird noises or Malmsteens noeclassical bach copys, and the genre of music is very difrent. I tend to like the bluesier parts of it, like Paul Gilbert and Jimy Kids record. As for the jazzers, I haven't decided if I would call them shreaders.
It is said to be the first Test-pressing of the corean release??

The only REAL shred guitarists on there are Malmsteen, Vai, Satch, Buckethead and Petrucci (well, those are the ones I know anyway).
but the point is, a HUGE distinction needs to be made between jazz and shred.  totally different styles of playing.

but, hell, dont listen to me, Im just a bass player.

Yes, it's a shame that shred has become a genre itself (although technical ability has always been respected and demonstrated with cadenzas and stuff). But if you look at the term as refering strictly to someone who plays fast, the jazz/fusion guys would fit right in. And since most of the players metioned have developed their skill to ridiculous speed, they're all roughly equal in that aspect of playing, so its logical to pick a guitarist whose playing appeals more rather than who's fastest.

Sadly this attitude is quite common on these boards...

Perhaps, but it is still the truth. He is a better shredder than the ones mentioned. I wouldn't say it with such confidence if I wasn't absolutely sure of it. Buckethead himself regards him as the best guitarist ever to have lived, and Buckethead knows what he's talking about.

Romeo from symphony X blows them all away ... so does Brent Allman from Shadow Gallery .. I`m  starting to believe that people who start up these polls know very little about prog metal ... Normaly the better performers are overlooked or could it be just not known by the person  making the poll !  (but without doubt known very well by the true prog metal community) just to point out how OUT this poll is   no  Alex Lifeson  from  Rush ?...  shame on you !

Since Yngwie invented "shred" or at least popularized it, my vote goes to him.

I'd have to go with John Petrucci.  There are many shread guitarist, but few have the clarity that Petrucci has.  Guys like Friedman and Becker are excellent shredders, but they lack the precision that Petrucci has.

Many of those guitarists are not "shredders" at all.  Malmsteen is probably the most recognized for his shred, with Vai and satriani close behind.  of those three I like Satriani the best, because Malmsteen's shredding is pretty useless, and steve Vai's persona is just way too flashy for me.

However, I voted for Buckethead because he's just crazy.  Most of his solo work is good, but everything he does with Les Claypool is beyond amazing.

There is no such thing as a good shredder.

Mindlessly fast playing is a waste of time; when you judge a guitarist by "number of notes per second" it's simply time to give up.

Most great guitarists can shred if they want (Hackett can play as fast as anyone on that list (witness his incredible acoustic playing), but he doesn't waste his time simply churning out notes at maximum rate). For another guitarist who could play with incredible speed and combine it with taste and delicacy, listen to Eric Bell on the original Thin Lizzy version of "Whiskey in the Jar" and compare it with the somewhat ham-fisted imitation by Kirk Hammett on the Metallica covers album. Jan Akkerman could also play incredibly fast when he chose (see him live for proof) but it was pointless, so he only did it occasionally.

Don't get me wrong; some on that list are excellent guitarists but don't judge them just on speed. Indeed, John Petrucci would improve so much if he slowed down and inserted some emotion!
