At the front end of the 70's you had Fanny & Birtha who were all female rock bands, plus the blues rock bands Vinegar Joe and Stone the Crows who were female fronted (by Elkie Brooks and Maggie Bell Respectively).

You need to go back a lot further than that. Girlschool was considered a metal band, they were all female and they started sometime in the late 70's. There might have been others even before that.

As far as I know, female-fronted metal began in 1995 when The Gathering released their album "Mandylion".

Girl School and Joan Jett.
I don't remember what The Runaways sounded like (her first band), but Jett on her own was into hard rock. Wendy Williams of The Plasmatics. Edited by Easy Money - September 03 2021 at 18:32 |

Please tell me all of the pioneers of female-fronted hard-rock and female-fronted metal! I'm mainly interested in artists who were around before the year 2000. Thank you very much in advance!
