I forgot, very used to the top 3 idea. No problem, then, #1 is still #1, after all. Thanks for reminding us, Logan.

I read it that we only vote for one choice this round.

Three of these I knew well -- the Klaus Nomi, Air, and Cat Stevens tracks.

My vote goes to Gnags - Fra en Fremmed Planet.

I will decide on the other two at a later date if JD requests more than one choice.

As always, tough to decide!  Fun topic and wide-ranging (as should be expected, it's space, after all) selections.  Thanks to JD, Lorenzo and George, as always, of course.  ClapClapClap I will vote on the other two once we can vote multiple times, but am putting in my #1 choice.

1.  Mike:  Gorillaz “Every Planet We Reach is Dead”   Any of yours would have been a contender for me, this time, as I'd stated earlier. But this won won hands down for me of my Top 3.

2.  Christian:  Cat Stevens “Novim's Nightmare”  Almost made #1, but I just loved that Gorillaz piece, for sheer inventiveness.

3.  Hiram:  Tuomari Nurmio “Punainen Planeetta”   I enjoyed the bemusement in the vocal and the slightly wonky sound of the song.  Sort of a Lost In Space comedic bent to it.

If you'd chosen differently, these three would also have been in contention:

Shadowyzard:  Celestial Asylum “Sumeria, Realm of the Gods”

George:  The Tubes “Space Baby”

Anders:  Einstürzende Neubauten “Total Eclipse of the Sun”

My podium is at the bottom.

Here's my general take:

Mica Levi - Alien Loop (Logan): A nice ambient instrumental piece. If I were an alien, I'd abduct a woman wearing furs and torture her! (As in the image of the video.)

Air - Space Maker (Cristi): Very nice sound. An OK song. More like an improvisation than a composition.

Tom Rapp - Mars (Snicolette): I loved the cover art! And mind you, I didn't expect such a song after seeing it. Nice country vibes! Sorta "timid" vocals (lots of "out of the tunes", but not in a spoiling way), and a tranquil spirit.

Billy Thorpe - Children of the Sun (mathman0806): Wow! This deserves to be a classic! Awesome!

Klaus Nomi - Total Eclipse (JD): I made a poll including this song recently. (http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=126564) As one can guess, I love this song!

Comet is Coming - Journey Through the Asteroid Belt (suitkees): Wow, the sax sounds like electric guitar at the beginning. I was fooled. An authentic sound, for sure. Loved the "theme" also. Darkly beautiful and charming, mesmerizingly sophisticated. Thumbs up! (I slightly complain about the use of the hi-hat cymbal though.)

Gnags - Fra en Fremmed Planet (The Anders): Who would've guessed that this song with a static intro rocks & rolls thereafter? Loved the outro too. Very professionally made song, which is also enjoyable.

Billy Lee Riley - Flying Saucers Rock n Roll (tigerfeet): Easy to play, hard to feel! (Ah was it about blues?Star) Always a delight to listen to classic rock 'n' roll!

Steve Vai - Little Green Men (siLLy puPPy): A funny and fun song. Musically interesting too. This is prog, people!

Tuomari Nurmio - Punainen Planeetta (Hiram): For no obvious reason, I liked the vocals a lot. Very soulful. If it were sung in English, I wouldn't be crazy about it, I guess.

Gorillaz - Every Planet We Reach is Dead (TCat): I guess I haven't missed much by not listening to this famous band before. Sounds like a good song in its style, but sadly I'm not interested in such music.

Eugenio Finardi - Extraterrestre (jamesbaldwin): Ah unlike the one above, this song has a soul! Very dynamic and tight musicianship, passionate vocals. Delightful sound. Surprising twists & turns. Uplifting air! Thumbs up!

Graham Parker - Waiting for the UFOs (dr wu23): I loved this song for sentimental reasons. Sometimes simplicity is more preferable to sophistication for me.

Cat Stevens - Novim's Nightmare (Lewian): A nice emotional song, but not made me feel some special feelings. Stevens' singing... Not really my thing. The part between 2:57 and 3:05 made me say: "WTF?"

Fleetwood Mac - Bermuda Triangle (cstack3): A striking visual in the cover. A nice, authentic song with a tranquil country air. The monotonous vocals fit very well to the overall structure of the song. I wouldn't wan to hear shrieks and screams in this song. I liked this a lot.

Marek Bilinskiki & Bank Opowiesci kosmiczne (Hrychu): The sound is bad. Dunno if related to Youtube or the recording. Also the mix is... weird. Sometimes it gets annoying. It is understandable though. A live recording from the early '80s... A nice song, if I overlook the sound.

And those that made it to my podium are:

1-)
Eugenio Finardi - Extraterrestre (jamesbaldwin)
2-) Comet is Coming - Journey Through the Asteroid Belt (suitkees)
3-)
Billy Thorpe - Children of the Sun (mathman0806)

Interesting soundscape as usually with Gorillaz. There's a lot of electronics and avant sounds, as well as a wah-wah guitar. The vocal harmonies are kind of gospel-like. Strong contender.

Eugenio Finardi - Extraterrestre (jamesbaldwin)
Very late-80's to early 90's sound aesthetics (the keyboards + the snare drum sound). Judging by the speed in which the words are sung, there should be some substance here. Was a translation provided? I don't remember.

Graham Parker - Waiting for the UFOs (dr wu23)
And now for something very different. The melody and sound is a bit odd. I think I need to hear it again to judge it properly, but it is quite a quirky number. Not a type of music I would normally associate with something extraterrestial.

Cat Stevens - Novim's Nightmare (Lewian)
The song starts with acoustic guitar and piano. Composition-wise it is very folkish, especially with regards to the melody. The arrangement gradually builds up towards the end, f.e. with vocal harmonies. Fine song, as are most of the entries in this poll.

Fleetwood Mac - Bermuda Triangle (cstack3)
I'm not very familiar with Bob Welch era Fleetwood Mac, and I don't think I have heard this one either. There's something a bit introvert or mystic about their music from that period. It makes it difficult to really get hooked on it, but on the other hand it is also fascinating in its own way. Had it not been for Mick Fleetwood's easily recognizable drumming, I would not have guessed that this is the band who later made Rumours.

Marek Bilinskiki & Bank Opowiesci kosmiczne (Hrychu)
Heavy riff-based guitar rock containing synthesizers in the front. The track is purely instrumental. My main association is 70's hard rock. I like it a lot.

I like most of the songs, so I am afraid voting will be difficult.

About Eugenio Finardi: Extraterrestre

You are right, it's easy listening but the text is important.

If you go on page 2, you find the lyrics.

Amos Goldberg (professor of Genocide Studies at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem): Yes, it's genocide. It's so difficult and painful to admit it, but we can no longer avoid this conclusion.

Thank you, Anders...indeed the violin was deliberately skewed, to seem more alien, I would imagine.  Tom Rapp was a wonderful poet/lyricist, imo.  He also wrote another Bradbury-inspired song, "Rocket Man," (predating the Elton John song of the same name, slightly different subject) and several more space-themed songs, all with his group Pearls Before Swine.  A compilation album of covers of some of his PBS songs was entitled "For the Dead in Space," featuring The Bevis Frond, Damon & Naomi and The Shy Camp, released in 1997.

Next batch of songs.

Air - Space Maker (Cristi)
An instrumental track with a very interesting groove built around some percussion instrument (or is it just a random object that is played on?). There are some rather ominous synthesizers too. I like it a lot. Possible contender.

Tom Rapp - Mars (Snicolette)
It begins with a purposely badly played violin which is quickly counterpointed by a warm acoustic guitar and a down-to-earth (or rather to-Mars?) vocal performance. It's a singer/songwriter ballad. The sound aesthetics is pleasantly dry and "living room"-like. There's also a very thoughtful, slightly melancholic feel to it. The lyrics are narrative, and they sound quite poetic to me. Another possible contender.

Billy Thorpe - Children of the Sun (mathman0806)
Starts with some dark sounds. Then there's a rather weird drum solo of sorts, after which the sound effects come back along with a distorted guitar with chorus effect. Then enter the singing. I like the vocals a lot, especially the vocal harmonies. Is there a bit of early Queen about it overall?

Billy Lee Riley - Flying Saucers Rock n Roll (tigerfeet)
I don't normally connect 50's rockabilly with space invasions, and if I could not understand the lyrics, I would never have guessed what it was about. On the other hand, there were quite a few (very bad) science fiction films made during the 50's, and the clip that is used underneath the audio reminds me of Plan 9 From Outer Space (except it's in colour, and you can't see the wires that the saucers are hanging in - boo!). A cool track in any case.

Steve Vai - Little Green Men (siLLy puPPy)
This one contains some pretty hilarious midi-sounding instrumental imitations, combined with a vocal that appears to be recorded at a low speed and then speeded up. I can't really connect it with one of the ultimate gods of the guitar nerds. Several elements in the music (unusual time signatures and off-beat instrumental melodies) remind me of Frank Zappa. I can not decide if it is fun or just silly - or both - but I think Zappa was better at the Spike Jones department.

Tuomari Nurmio - Punainen Planeetta (Hiram)
The music sounds quite new-wave'ish, but interestingly I think the production values are more 90's-like. It's a very basic production with only a few overdubs, but that also gives it a freshness and some charm. There's something a bit naive about the music too which I really appreciate. Despite the topic, it is very down-to-earth.

Enjoyable, wish I had the lyrics in English, you’ll have to let me know if I’m correct on my feelings about how the person took this close encounter.

Thanks for your thoughtful comments as usual!

Yes, the protagonist of the song is definitely more bemused or even enthusiastic than frightened.
Thank you for confirming for me!  It was well-done then, as it conveyed it even without knowing the language.

Very creative people, obviously.  Probably fun to hang around with, reminds me of my old crowd (still friends with them, but some have gone to the other side, sadly).  Musicians, visual and performance artists, crafters, writers, no field of art left unvisited.

As an insight, for this one, every single one of your selections would have it into final consideration for me.  I don't think I've done that with any one person before, in all of these polls.  Very inspired choices.  Clap

There is a wistfulness to this song, as was prefaced with the choice of the intro.  It seems as though the song is done, but there are some ominous sounds that come back in for the final couple of minutes.  Flaming Lips “Space Oddity”  Ominous start, with single notes with a marimba sound.  Nice cover and lovely theatrics.  It almost feels like they’ve turned into a cult that worships Bowie, lol, like years after he’s gone with the quasi-religious theme.  I like this band a lot, thank you.
