OK, eventually I played that Shaggs thing again and fair enough, it's still more fun to me than most of the others, so I give it the third spot. The most curious thing is to wonder whether they know how off they are and whether the song works for the listener in the way they wanted it to work. What goes on in these ladies? Well, this was a fun idea but not exactly a poll that'll add to my collection big time.

Well... nobody should ever feel guilty for the music they like,... but... I get very well why most of you feel guilty about these. The vast majority of these just don't do anything for me, sorry, it's just how it is. Some of the extended list are much better. OK, votes then. I agree with others that Lana del Rey is the best of these, by quite some distance. After Lana comes Lena -
Lena d'Água & Atlântida, fun song that is welcome for replay. For the third vote I was torn between that religious piece, Gel Gör Beni, and the Shaggs. The Shaggs is fun and charming except listening to it once seems enough, I got the joke... but listening to Gel Gör Beni for the second time wasn't exactly super-entertaining either. Hmmm, other candidates? Maybe Madonna? But the one out of the competition is so much better... Oh! Now I realise I haven't listened to the one on bandcamp, that may save me... coming back later...

So, I updated the all videos playlist to go over 100 (now at 106) and I think this has to be worst of the bunch.

I didn't vote for a-ha, I know it too well and have absolutely no shame in liking it That Madonna song was such a long lost memory, but it was good remembering it. I liked that RAH Band song at first but it drags on a lot. So I voted for three songs I never heard before: Squirrel Nut Zipper, The Osmonds (both really fun) and The Shaggs (so comically good).

Thanks. ---------------------------------------------- And by the way, I opted to cast my third vote for Lana Del Rey's "Video Games". Love the music and it's so much better than this Video Games, which I have listened to far too much in the past: I have yet to listen to many not officially listed. Some of the songs are genuinely good. Nothing to feel guilty about. lena d'água & atlântida - vígaro cá vígaro lá reminds me a bit of Blondie. Edited by The Anders - July 04 2020 at 12:43 |

@ TCat: Hysterical! You gotta think that Ray Stevens smoked some pot in his time.
@ Shadowyzard: Just beautiful, thank you! @ Logan: Love the Badalamenti music for Twin Peaks, part of it's great charm. And thanks for the Monkees vote. And I love Nick Drake. Those spaghetti westerns had great music and were quite fun to watch. @ Micky: Re Bill, ya gotta love a guy who's famous for bashing things with such a great sense of humour. @ Lorenzo: In case you missed it, thanks for the Monkees vote as well! OK, I think I'm caught up, up to here. These threads are a little awkward for quick responses. I often will "thank," someone on a post, either as an actual thank you, or kind of what would be a thumbs up on some other place. Wondering if it bugs people if I edit sometimes on a quote, to respond to just part, or without the video if it's a response to that....just trying to save people's scrolling so much. |

Can't wait to hear what you've all shared. I'll do it tonight. Also glad that Gel Gör Beni is liked by people here. BTW, this is my favourite Turkish "arabesk" song. Again, I comfortably mention it to anyone, so not a guilty pleasure. Turkish music is quite diverse and eclectic, perhaps I'll share other Turkish songs in different styles for other polls, if those fit the criteria. I said "not a guilty pleasure", but if I were in my 20s now, I might have hesitated to share these. You know, no metal-head can easily risk the shattering of their metallic-tough-guy charisma. |

My God, my head is spinning after reading all of this thread that jumps from one thing to another and now we are posting soundtracks already. This could be triggering if you've ever had a concussion.
Anyway, my top three are based on my favorites from the poll that are the final picks for the posters. If you want to see my thoughts about the embarrassing ones, see my previous post somewhere buried in this thread (pg 15 I think). 1. Lana del Ray - Video Games. This was the biggest surprise for me with the depth of this song. Beautiful. Since I already knew The Osmonds track, it wasn't a surprise. 2. The Shags - Philosophy of the World. Yes it's kooky, but it is also a pan-head delight. 3. Weird Al - White and Nerdy. Mr. Yankovic is always a winner for me. Not only is he a brilliant humorist, but he's an amazing musician and so is his band. Is Rick Derringer (Rock n Roll Hootchie Koo) still in his band? I would have put System of a Down on my list for which one was available for voting, but I felt Squirrel Nut Zippers applied to the poll better this time. No doubt I will feature them again somewhere down the line. They deserve to be recognized in this group of music lovers. Thanks for the acknowledgement Raffi, I hope you get a chance to explore the band, I don't think you'll be disappointed.

For a lot of these songs, I already know them, so I think voting will be more difficult this time.

Yeah, the intro there, as in many, is the main TV show theme music. ^ That's fun, I've liked this one since I was a child: |

Haven[t finalised my thinking, but as some notes of some that stood out:
Eyüp Hamiş - Gel Gör Beni. I loved that, and just because I'm not religious doesn't make any religious music a guilty pleasure. I enjoy choirs, nasheeds, chanting of different kinds. I love a lot of music inspired by religion even if I don't support certain (more orthodox generally) religious attitudes or practices (especially when it comes to less tolerant and more close-minded adherents). The Monkees - Shades of Gray. The song that inspired 50 Shades of Gray. I'm not monkeying around when I say that I really enjoy that. Edited by Logan - July 04 2020 at 09:09 |
