the more I listen .. the more I like. I think her singing is a bit of an acquired taste but with a minimum of effort to try to appreciate.. do shine quite brightly. I had a feeling as much of when I caught that with each listen of that one you posted I liked more and more. It wasn't a grab you by the neck upon first listen.. but more of a sinking in.. and as prog fans.. we should come to expect that more than getting or expecting instant gratification.

The Hu - neat song musically. The throat singing will have to be a grower though I think but it is a unique take on vocals.
A Covenant of Thorns - with a name like A Covenant of Thorns I was bracing myself for cookie monster growling. It might just be me but I kind of got a Robert Smith and The Cure vibe off of this song. Johnny Cash - Aside from The Devil Went Down to Georgia, I really can't stand country music...and this song does nothing to change that for me. I know that Mr. Cash is an American institution and he does have a good voice, but not my cuppa. Van Morrison - I'm a long time fan of Brown-Eyed Girl and Gloria. I wasn't familiar with this one though. Grizzly Bear - I had not heard this song before, so I listened to the original first before listening to the Michael McDonald version. I enjoyed it. I liked the Michael McDonald version better. Jellyfish - I had never heard of Jellyfish until Prog magazine did an "Are they prog or not feature on them?" a year or so ago. I meant to give them a listen to check them out...but this is the first song that I am hearing from them. Not hearing prog here but a little bit of disco sound and ELO violins. Not bad. Sebastian - this one has a language barrier for me since I don't speak any French. I think that singer songwriter songs work best when you understand what is being sung. Again I'm not sure why but it brings to mind Greg Lake's Lucky Man crossed with Gordon Lightfoot. :) Jano Brindisi - she has a nice voice. Was definitely not familiar with this song. Made me chuckle as it reminded me of the Big Bang Theory and the storyline of Penny having had a movie role as a woman who changed into a killer gorilla. Rickie Lee Jones - a well known artist that I can honestly say I was not familiar with. This was a good song and she has a really nice voice. Holger Hiller - this was surprisingly enjoyable in a strange way. I can see this track fitting in on an album of novelty tracks right alongside Hocus Pocus and such... Avatarium - references The Nercromancer...so bonus points for that. :) It kind of has a feel of a Rainbow song with Dio on it. Starts off slow and acoustic and then builds up to a heavier and more dramatic ending. I like her voice. JJ Grey - I like the organs and bass line. I can't put my finger on who they remind me of. Maybe a little bit of Lynyrd Skynyrd. Parliament - this is one of those artists where I give the music a 7 or an 8 but the lyrics and vocals get a 2 or 3. I like the funky bass and the horns but my god the lyrics are horrible. Cake - this was my suggestion...and a song that I've always really enjoyed. It was the first time I had watched the video...and I quite enjoyed that too. So my vote: Cake - The Distance Grizzly Bear (ft. Michael McDonald) - While We Wait for the Others Holger Heller - Ohi Oh Bang Bang

So, enough people seemed to enjoy Jano Brindisi and now that I know that dropbox links work, here is a song written around the same time as Gorilla Girl, but an older recording than the YT video I submitted. This one is called, "Someday."
https://www.dropbox.com/s/b4j4y50n44u3vtt/Jano%20Brindisi%20-%20Jano%20-%2010%20Someday.mp3?dl=0 And if you're intrigued, check out her bandcamp page, this one is on the s/t LP. Some subject matter is very explicit.

As promised, I listened and am just not a fan of those kinds of vocals, which I had trouble escaping...but still enjoy exploring anything new and different, musically.

dear God.. wow.. I bet you do not Yeah, I did make it my crusade to try to expose people to him and was quite militant about it. Actually badgered and cajoled many of my fellow collabs to listen and review him.

I'll listen and vote tonight, or else tomorrow. I didn't feel like doing critical listening yesterday.

OK, just voted! As I said yesterday, I didn't find it very easy to relate to most of the songs this time around. This doesn't mean they were not good - it's just a question of personal taste. Anyway, I did get to choosing my top 3. Here they are 1. Van Morrison - TB Sheets (the only song besides mine I was already familiar with) 2. Rickie Lee Jones - The Magazine 3. Grizzly Bear - While You Wait... Jano Brindisi and Jellyfish were also interesting, as was (in its own twisted way) the Holger Hiller number.

Good to hear! I love (and support) Framework Radio and it has 716 shows online, that's 716 hours of field recordings. I never run out of stuff when I feel like I need this! (BTW it was your earlier avatar that turned me to Battiato.)

Never thought of that, but I can see what you mean. He actually started as a sort of hippie'ish folk rock artist: http://youtube.com/watch?v=RNX9VYByyBY

you know.. I got tied up last night and didnt' get a chance to listen to this but have been while enjoying a pot of Raff coffee.. and ... I really dig this.. this wasn't Saturday night sack and pillage music (much as I love that) but Sunday morning birds chirping outside and peace and quite kind of music. I dig it man... very Battiato like.. and you know how much I love his stuff.

I agree with a lot of things written by The Anders. I add: - The HU: very good music but I dont like the vocals. - A Covenant of Thorns: good electronic music but the electronic percussions are not for me. - Van Morrison: I love his voice and his vocals, but here the composition is too simple and repetitive. - Grizzly Bear: agree with the Anders in toto. A candidate? - Jano Brindisi agree again with the Anders. Possible candidate for my Top 3. - Jellyfish: The Anders has heard music similar to Toto: wow, the same for me. He will probably go on the podium. I like it. - Sebastian: Dear friend, this is a true French chansonnier-style singer-songwriter, like Brel or Brassens! Melancholic, a bit boring too, but a deliberate, refined boredom .. ... He can aspire to the podium. Now the second part of the list. |

Amos Goldberg (professor of Genocide Studies at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem): Yes, it's genocide. It's so difficult and painful to admit it, but we can no longer avoid this conclusion.

I remember I went to see Bob Dylan at the Shoreline Ampitheater like 89 or 90, and toward the end, a guy gets on stage and is playing guitar and we think it's Neil Young. The guitar sounded like it was Neil, and he had long hair and was hunched over like Neil, but since he never turned around and faced the audience through two songs, we weren't certain. At the end he walked off and it sounded like Dylan said it was Neil Young. But we weren't sure since it was Dylan talking.

I have heard of the Catalyst and passed by it, but never went to a show there. My ex-wife grew up in Woodside and was neighbors with Neil. They shared a common stalker at one time. A guy was stalking Neil and decided he also liked the nearby teenage girl.
