well mine.... was going to try to match Nickie's drop dead awesomes election last week with a non-western music favorite of mine.. but that will be next week and going back the songwriter well...

we did the suicidal song writers theme.. now let's go darker and more depressing than that.

One of my all time top 10 favorite songs.. probably even a top 5'r.. amazing sh*t man....

So, I'm going to try something a little different this time.  I think most people know the band Grizzly Bear and their excellent song "While You Wait for the Others".  But there is a version of it that not many have heard, and that is the one I want to be voted on.  First, I am posting the original version just in case you haven't heard it before, but remember, this is not the version you are voting on:

So, imagine what this would sound like if another person sang it along with the band, say Michael McDonald.  This is what you are voting on.  Personally, I'm not a Michael McDonald fan except for the work he did with Steely Dan, but this is the best thing I have ever heard him cover, and the cool thing is, the band is supporting him here.  Anyway, here it is:

It's going to be pretty hard to beat The HU!  OK, I was torn between 3 things, a classic jazz piece (that I'm not sure how many are familiar with), a minimalist harp piece (by a composer I'm sure most folks around here know, but maybe not the piece) and this one (which I'm pretty sure no one here knows, nor may they want to).  Singer/songwriter Jano Brindisi is originally from Chicago (you'll hear it), now residing in New Orleans.  Step in line for the Gorilla Girl.

Sebastian - Sangen om Vandhjulet (Die Ballade vom Wasserrad, The Ballad of the Millwheel)

Music: Sebastian
Lyrics: Bertolt Brecht

The song is taken from the album Tiderne Skifter (The Times are Changing, 1979) which contains Sebastian's own compositions to a handful of Brecht lyrics.

Here is an English translation. I don't know who made it, but Richard Desjardins later used it for his own composition:

Many great ones through the ages
Have attained to erthly power
yet they all had their hour
as we witnessed behind our cages.
Sad it is when fate has failed to speed them.
But for us whose job it is to feed them
whether this one's high or that one low
the load on our shoulders always go.

Still the millwheel turns, it turns forever
though what it uppermost remains not so.
The water underneath, in vain endeavor
does the work but always stays below.

Many are different masters
who have ruled us in their day
eagles, hyenas and tigers
even swine have had their say
Which one was better than the other?
Every boot is a copy of its brother
Do you understand what's here intended?
We don't need no masters, we want all mastery ended.

Still the millwheel turns etc.

And they beat their hands till they are bloody
scrambling after booty.
Everyone calls the other " rascal "
and himself " the slave of duty ".
Time has comme away to speed them.
Each in lasting conflict with its brother.
Only our will that we won't feed them
brings them to peace with one another.

[Not in the English translation:]
For then the wheel stops running, time changes
And we're done with both force and consolation
The water frees its forces
and finally follows its own lust

Even got into some really heated arguments over the years with Doobie fans regarding which version of the band was best out of my homoerotic love of his voice hahah

well he doesn't get a lot of play obviously on the Archives and battles with Doobie fans where many many years in the past on this forum but yeah..  always loved what he did.  SD, DB and solo.. but I hadn't heard that before so that was really great to hear. Personal story: The school to which I went has a neighbouring rival school. That's Hamburg's oldest school, "humanist" (meaning that pupils had to do loads of Latin and ancient Greek) and full with a sense of self-importance. It has a long list of notable alumnis. When I went to school, we thought that their pupils all think they're better, all full of themselves thinking of themselves as geniuses, surely most of them came from a pretty rich background, and they (or at least a majority of them) were strongly right wing. They put all kinds of stuff in their hair but our hair was longer, we were the progressive ones, we were better in English (be it the only subject in which we could beat them), didn't have to waste our time on silly Latin and ancient Greek (except that I elected Latin at some point) and in some sense we also thought we were better. (Oh, and we had German chancellor Helmut Schmidt as alumni, at least that, whereas they had Hitler's Minister of Economics, Hjalmar Schacht... admittedly they had some more impressive ones, too.)

Holger Hiller is ten years older than me, and I don't know him personally, no idea how he related (or didn't) to our stereotype, but he went to that school, and when I went to the lefty long hair rival school, his band Palais Schaumburg was held as something of a flagship band by that school. I thought that Palais Schaumburg represented them well, not stupid, but trying hard to be supercool and special. (Actually I now think that they were better than anything our school would have put together music-wise, including my own stuff.) When I heard Holger Hiller's solo work, I finally realised that he, at least he, really is a genius, which was hard to admit. Anyway, have fun with him!

wow man...  not sure if that will get a 1-3 vote.. but definitely the WTF selection (in a good way).

and yeah..  I will have fun with him. Micky style

Normally at work during the noon hour we unload with the local NPR station WPFW that plays an hour of the blues, old school sh*t.  We blast that stuff till our ears bleed

but not tomorrow.. no sir

I'm loading that into the player as I type.. and see what kind of reaction that song gets me at the office.  Either reaffirmation of my god like status I currently enjoy...  or a sudden fall from grace and tossed out the front door onto my ass and the doors locked behind me.

Vegas is giving me even odds on this one... I'll report back tomorrow

This week it'll be JJ Grey & Mofro - Lochloosa.

I spent nearly 9 years in Florida after spending most of my life in California. Definitely a different culture. But it's the heat and humidity. Killed off some brain cells and dropped some IQ points. Whenever you hear about something dumb happening out of Florida, it's because of the heat and humidity. I'll say that over and over. In any case, I did have some good times, and this song always makes me think of my time down there in a good way.

1. The Hu. Really like this genuine Mongolian Folk Metal thing.
2. Johnny Cash.
3. Sebastian.

Also good: JJ Grey & Mofro, but he takes quite a lot of time to drive home his point.
Peculiar: Jano Brindisi. The theme of a girl turning into a gorilla seems quite the other way around to me: while age proceeds I'm gradually developing some similarity to a silverback whilst my wife has unlearned some bonobo behaviour patterns. Nice guitar by the way.

I could not stand the Holger Hiller track and stopped it after 1:35. This one was directly putting on my nerves. Pleased to read that the guy refrained from making music and became a teacher: I guess he made the right choice.

Hard to order these for me and again, there were several contenders if there was a 4th choice.

1.  Johnny Cash.  I had not heard this whole release, only his cover of "Hurt," which I also find moving.  Also, even though I'd known his name had never really listened to Nick Cave until Ghosteen was released, again a supremely moving recording.  Johnny's evocative voice is so perfectly suited to this song.  Had to go with it for #1.

2.  HU.  You already know my penchant for non-western music.  Would have been #1 without Mr. Cash.

3.  Avatarium.  Something about this just got me, I like the vocals and the spookiness.

Other thoughts....  TB Sheets.  Love Van Morrison, this one isn't in my top picks for him, but it still resonates and, fits another personal penchant.....really dark, sad subject matter.

Cake was a surprise.  Not a fan of mostly spoken modern stuff, but I did like what he was saying and the video was well done for the piece (but this isn’t about videos).  Also enjoyed the juxtaposition of horns peeking in and out.

Holger Hiller.  Not for me, reminded me of when I wanted to listen to classical music during an MRI and they had some pretty avant-garde classical playing on the headphones.  That being said, it did fit in with the sounds of an MRI, but I asked as soon as I could if they could change the station.

Sebastian….loved the music, not so fond of the voice and delivery.

Covenant of Thorns almost made it, too.  I liked the singer, would like to hear it redone with less of an 80’s feel to the production (but I did like some 80’s music)

was lurking.. doing my relistens..

I had wondered what you thought of that one Nickie... impressed and not surprised you knew it.. i've been surprised however over the years how many 'fans' of his didn't know that one.  It also hits my proclivity for the dark and sad (one reason Bluebird hit me.. and still after countless listens..the innate sadness of it.. hits right into the soul and speaks very personally to me). Unlike much IMO in the non-Italian singer-songwriter class.. musically though is really what got me. It not just fit the lyrics in its dirge like quality but left enough room for what I adore about it.. the subtle organ and guitar fills.

Thumbs Up

I think I'm ready to vote

some thoughts
The Hu - yeah.. I do love hearing the 'different' and exotic and you can't beat Mongolian folk metal in that.  They get a vote

The Covenent of Thorns - I really really liked this.. but I waited in vain for it to hit a second gear and speed into the top 3.  Much like that Stephen Malkmus song in the 2nd poll.. was nice.. but it had a 2nd gear and rev'd into the top 3

Johnny Cash?  .. oh hell yeah... but lyrically it did nothing for me.

Grizzly Bear - loved both versions actually which means the vote isn't simply for MmD's voice alone. Really good song in which his voice just takes to a new level

Holger Hiller -  well that was interesting.. and no.. it did go over well at the office. I did have a beer can chucked at me and it didn't make it past the 2 minute mark.. .but you know..  it was interesting.. creative
so f**k it..  giving it the 3rd vote.

Also, my take on it is that it was very different for me to listen to and way a lot more fun than the MRI music.  The video was fun to watch, too.

I did have to pull out early due to pizza and beer beckoning and didn't finish my thoughts on some of the songs..

Sebastian - that almost got the 3rd vote...  helped by not understanding the hell what he was singing (always a plus because for me.. truly gifted lyricists are very rare) and for one of the rare times.. I found the music interesting.

the JJ Grey song...   I could completely dig that... if not for the acid hit that was the Holger song I might have really gone for the bong hit that was this song. Very chill..  I could have easily killed the few remaining cells I have to that..

the Cake song...   the one song I knew or could have named by them.. and it was a really damn good one but much like Jose's funk selections..  I want to hear what I haven't heard.. and the more exotic .. outside of my normal stylistic erogenous listening zone.. the better.

Avarartium...  I do normally love female vocals.. but unfortunately there is one style i detest. and that one hit it.  Pretty good musically though

the Rickie Lee Jones song..  liked that alot... of course I could have only named one song by her previous to hearing that.. but that song alone .what 40 years later.. I saw her suggestion come in and said.. oh hell yeah i LOVE her voice.. and that did not disappoint.

the Brindisi song.. . I think a potential grower.. each time I listen to it I like it more.  I think it is mainly her singing that is what didn't catch at first yet i like the more I listen.

the Jellyfish song  -  cute.. even a bit catchy...but a bit too jaunty and upbeat for my tastes.

Thanks for giving Jano a good listen.  someoneelse person said, "peculiar," which fits, too.  Got a kick out of his remarks about bonobos, etc.   I like that she was thinking about the person behind the illusion (this is a real carnival act, or was, in the midwest, still as late as 2008, although Jano saw it in the 60's), implying wondering how much of the gorilla girl she had inside herself.  I loved the film, "Freaks."  Oh, and the acoustic guitar underpinning it is a little lost with the electric guitar punctuation (which works well, Marcel Anton is pretty known as a session player with a great pedigree) , but if you listen, it's sort odd and sliding, like slipping carnival music.

the band is called Avatarium, it's a female fronted doom metal band from Sweden. I don't know why I chose one of their more mellow songs, they're usually heavier.

Dare I ask what's wrong with her singing?

I wish you'd try other songs and tell me what you think.

yeah it worked on my befouled and out of date computer so sure it will for anyone else's.

Not there was anything wrong per se with the first choice of hers but I did enjoy this one more.. perhaps even to have stolen that 3rd vote.

and yeah.. I've taken to uploading my own youtube videos at times.  It is pretty easy to do.. if an idiot like me can dot it.. one who still struggles how to use the office printer/fax..and continually hangs up on people trying to transfer people (yes I got the office job as a semi retirement gift to myself and Raff.. but am most certainly not a office kind of guy. Though I still do have the legs and ass for it..)

Cool, we'll see if anyone else is interested in more.  She did that YT video herself, I'd found some of the images, and it's in the can for a potential release.  It's always been one of my fave songs of hers, because it's so quirky.  And unlike anything else I'd added to these polls, which I find really fun, exploring what other people like that is outside of the progressive realm.

My saying re so much tech requiring so much work, as opposed to truly giving us less work is "Modern life is a waste of time."  So much time spent just waiting for things, wrinkles with fabulous "upgrades," password changes...don't get me started.  Big smile

I like that idea.. we'll see what Lorenzo thinks.. it is his BBQ, and man it tastes good.

A one week detour at the very least from the free form might not be a bad idea.. I was also sort of thinking of doing a poll of champions from the previous polls... I've caught myself going back to some of the previous and redigging some of the ones I really liked.. especially that Lambchop song..

I simple youtube search would have done the trick, their debut album is the most interesting if you ask me. Not exactly a beginners band, their main songwriter is also in the famous band Candlemass.

Part 1:

The Hu - The Great Chinggis Khaan. Metal meets Mongolian throat singing. Not uninteresting, but tbh. it's not so much me. In fact I am very selective when it comes to things related to metal.

A Covenant of Thorns - If the Heavens Should Fall. Gloomy 80's sounding electropop. The singing is a bit Bowie'ish. Absolutely not bad. Not something I normally like to listen to though, but I fully acknowledge its qualities.

Johnny Cash sings Nick Cave - The Mercy Seat. This sends a shiver down my spine, and in the best possible way. Got a vote.

Van Morrison - TB Sheets. I like the bluesy feel, but considering how minimalistic it is, it drags on for a bit too long for my liking. I can understand its appeal though. I've never been a big fan of Van Morrison's singing style.

Grizzly Bear (ft. Michael McDonald) - While You Wait... Alternative rock as I like it. I slightly prefer it in the original version. If I am not mistaken, they just removed the vocal tracks from the original recording and made the other guy sing over it. Interesting song in any case, and a strong contender for my votes.

That is probably what they did, but it was the band that wanted McDonald to sing the lead part, and when he agreed to do it, they jumped at the chance.  It ended up being the b-side to the single.

Okay problems are ironed out for now, so I'm going to do my top three now while I have a chance.

1. Hu - The Great Chinggis Khan   Loved this the minute I heard it the first time.
2. Johnny Cash singing Nick Cave.  That song is perfect for Cash, and it is quite amazing how he was able to make so many songs his own when he covered them.  For example, his cover of "Rusty Cage" (originally by Soundgarden) is quite amazing.  It gives the song a whole new life.
3. This one is tough as it could have gone to any one of the entries.  There was so much to love about this round:  Jano Brindisi, Rickie Lee Jones, Jellyfish, Avatarium and Cake, but I have to go with JJ Grey & Mofro.  Once that track got up and going, it drew me right in.  Great vocals and guitar work.

Part 2:

Rickie Lee Jones - The Magazine. Quite a lot of maj7add9 chords in it. Piano ballad, and once again we're in the singer/songwriter area. In the 90's thre was a Danish singer called Randi Laubæk who sounded a bit like this.

Holger Hiller - Ohi oh bang bang. This is simply mindblowing. A bit eccentric of course, and that's just what I love about it. It may be far from prog, but it is definitely progressive. I actually made some recordings as a kid that sound a bit like it, but this is considerably more convincing. I have always liked the idea that everything with a sound can make music. This one got one of my votes.

So my votes were for:

Johnny Cash
Grizzly Bear
Holger Hiller

Following up with some actual thoughts. Didn't have time to really sit down on this during the day.

Big fan of the Hu and had listened to them earlier in the week, even considering them for a song until the poll came up. I also had a Nine Treasures song in mind. They are a similar band, but more metal in their brand of Mongolian folk metal. So, voted on the Hu though I am familiar with them. I do recommend them live. The show I went to was a sold out club, packed with around 300 people.

And Johnny Cash could sing just about anything. He could rattle off COVID-19 shelter in place guidelines to a tune and make it sound good. (And agree with TCat, I really like his cover of Rusty Cage. Makes the song bad-ass outlaw.)

Rickie Lee Jones choice had something to do with the time of day. I listened off and on to all the selections through the week, with a re-listen this morning, and Rickie and her voice just stood out for a Saturday morning. If it was at night, could have been someone else.

So, a few impressions on some of the tracks.

I always feel like I should like Jellyfish more than I do. They have elements of bands I like, plays power pop, worships 70's rock, and this track feels like ELO meets Queen, but they just seemed too slick and clever.

Jano Brindisi - Gorilla Girl would have been a possible late night choice. Listening to it made feel like I should be in a smoky room with cocktail. The imagery and the underlining tone of the guitar was late night for me.

With Holger Hiller, the video kept me listening/watching. Not sure if it would have worked for me without it. It's creative stuff, but it felt like Bobby McFerrin on acid, which could be good for some people, just not me.

The Avatarium track was one in which I felt like it should have just gone bananas at the end after the long slow build. Sure, there was that guitar solo, but I was wanting epic multi-tracked guitars with break-neck speed and banshee-like vocals.

So, this week's bonus vid is Nine Treasures w/ Liberation (Mongolian metal core band).

The harsh vocals are from Liberation and the clean from Nine Treasures, though the guy from Nine Treasures also does some guttural throat stuff on their own tracks.

For a few years, Jano lived upstairs at a well-known club in Santa Cruz, CA, The Catalyst.  Neil Young will use it for shows he announces a few hours in advance to do pre-tour shows in, as it's just down the road from Broken Arrow Ranch, and also close to San Francisco.  So interesting you got the smoke-filled room with cocktails.

I have heard of the Catalyst and passed by it, but never went to a show there. My ex-wife grew up in Woodside and was neighbors with Neil. They shared a common stalker at one time. A guy was stalking Neil and decided he also liked the nearby teenage girl.

I remember I went to see Bob Dylan at the Shoreline Ampitheater like 89 or 90, and toward the end, a guy gets on stage and is playing guitar and we think it's Neil Young. The guitar sounded like it was Neil, and he had long hair and was hunched over like Neil, but since he never turned around and faced the audience through two songs, we weren't certain. At the end he walked off and it sounded like Dylan said it was Neil Young. But we weren't sure since it was Dylan talking.

I will bet it was.  Neil has a pretty distinctive guitar style, if you thought it was him, it probably was.

I agree with a lot of things written by The Anders.

I add:

- The HU: very good music but I dont like the vocals.

- A Covenant of Thorns: good electronic music but the electronic percussions are not for me.

- Van Morrison: I love his voice and his vocals, but here the composition is too simple and repetitive.

- Grizzly Bear: agree with the Anders in toto. A candidate?

- Jano Brindisi agree again with the Anders. Possible candidate for my Top 3.

- Jellyfish: The Anders has heard music similar to Toto: wow, the same for me. He will probably go on the podium. I like it.

- Sebastian: Dear friend, this is a true French chansonnier-style singer-songwriter, like Brel or Brassens!

Melancholic, a bit boring too, but a deliberate, refined boredom .. ... He can aspire to the podium.

Now the second part of the list.

OK, just voted! As I said yesterday, I didn't find it very easy to relate to most of the songs this time around. This doesn't mean they were not good - it's just a question of personal taste. Anyway, I did get to choosing my top 3. Here they are

1. Van Morrison - TB Sheets (the only song besides mine I was already familiar with)
2. Rickie Lee Jones - The Magazine
3. Grizzly Bear - While You Wait...

Jano Brindisi and Jellyfish were also interesting, as was (in its own twisted way) the Holger Hiller number.
