Matt Bellamy

a sure sign people just don't care about guitar heroes like they used to
Porg for short. My love of music doesn't end with prog! Feel free to discuss all sorts of music with me. Odds are I'll give it a chance if I haven't already! :)

Excellent selection!  When I first started to play lead guitar, I used to jam along with Bill on Stanley Clarke's first solo LP, it was great fun!

Check out this amazing RTF tune!!  Bill BURNS on this one!

Phil Upchurch. He played with many artists and bands as a session guitarist. I think I know him from the Rotary Connection. I have two fine solo albums by him (Upchurch and Darkness Darkness) in a very nice soul jazz style. Here is a James Brown cover by him: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rbSlkluhWms

I don't have many favourite guitarists, because I usually just enjoy guitar in general and also I'm not into typical virtuoso style playing.  I wouldn't know any favourite prog rock guitarists. My favourites overall are Jimi Hendrix and Grant Green, but they are not under-appreciated.

How about Bari Watts.  Nick Saloman was always spruiking him, and his rare appearances on Bevis Frond albums were always memorable - like the dueling lead solos on 'Can't Feel it' from 'Valedictory Songs'.

I'd also rank Saloman. I really don't know if it qualifies as prog, or even one of his technically best moments, but his playing on the second solo on 'Stranger's Mirror' from 'North Circular' is incredibly intense.  Reminds me a bit of Marc Aaron's practically deranged lead in 'Captain Hook' by John Cale.

(from 8:15)

Bear in mind Saloman is playing every instrument here

NICE!!!  crossing off another artist off of the ever shrinking list that has yet to ever be mentioned in the hallowed halls of the PA's forum over the last 15 years...

C.C rules!!

favorite underrated guitarist.. easy easy lemon pezzy there.  Stephen f**king Stills.  The only guitarist ever to have been on the same record as both Hendrix and Clapton.. and the only who will ever have smoked them both with his playing.

he is IMO the perfect example of the underrated guitarist... fearsomely talented

I couldn't agree more.  One of the most melodic hard rock guitarists out there.  You can hear his jazz influences on lots of his solos (e.g. Moon Crazy off the album "Mirrors").

Somebody once said, and don't ask me who, but I remember reading it....that Don is someone who "never threw away a solo." As in, every single one was something he tried to make worthwhile.
