I agree that the only credible contender for so-called 5th Beatle is George Martin but I also believe his creative input and contribution diminished significantly over time as attested by Abbey Road engineer Ken Scott:

I think they actually reached the point where they didn’t even need him (George Martin) for orchestral arrangements, since they would play what they wanted the string lines to sound like on a piano and George just scored what they played. He wasn’t so much creating the arrangement as just transcribing it.

Even his Orchestral film score for their contractual obligation album 'Yellow Submarine' smacks of someone left in the lurch by his previous collaborators to plug a 20 minute shortfall.

BTW contrary to popular belief, only the Amp Room staff at Abbey Road wore white lab coats

This is silly. All you have to do is listen to the superb Beatles' Love album to know that without a doubt the 5th Beatle was Sir George Martin.

Definitely George Martin...the Beatles would have sounded drastically different without his guidance and arrangement abilities...

I'm going to stick to people who made musical contributions: George Martin was invaluable to the Beatles sound and their long-lasting appeal. While Billy Preston and others made performance contributions, George Martin often played a role in the very identity of the songs. Every Lennon/McCartney song, at least Revolver and on, was, in a way, Lennon/McCartney/Martin.

Surely we've already decided they never existed?

But if they had, it would have been Sir George Martin.

I'll go with what Paul says: If there was a fifth once the Fab Four as we knew it took shape, it was Brian.

First off, there's no way I'm going list that many people as there's only so many hours in a day, minutes in an hour and so on... LOL

And your list is incomplete because it left out John Woloschuk from Klaatu! Confused

C&P from wikipeeja:

  • Mitch Benn, Liverpudlian musical comedian, performed an Edinburgh Festival Fringe show entitled Mitch Benn is the 37th Beatle in which he counted up everyone claimed to be the fifth Beatle and tried to arrange them, "in descending order of Beatledom", including himself. This show was later performed on BBC Radio 4. The fifth Beatle on his list was Pete Best, with the rest of the list consisting of Stuart Sutcliffe (6th), Tony Sheridan (7th), the rest of the original Quarrymen (8th-12th), Andy White (13th), Jimmie Nicol (14th), Billy Preston (15th), Eric Clapton (16th), Brian Epstein (17th), George Martin (18th), Derek Taylor (19th), Mal Evans (20th), Neil Aspinall (21st), Badfinger (22nd-25th), Jeff Lynne (26th), Monty Python (27th-32nd), Neil Innes (33rd), David Catlin-Birch (34th), Neil Harrison (35th) and Elvis Costello (36th).[30]

It's time to decide once and for all. Who was really the 5th Beatle?

The contestants.

  1. Stu Sutcliffe: Original bassist for the Beatles who died of a brain hemorrhage shortly after leaving the Beatles in 1962.
  2. Pete Best: Original drummer for The Beatles who dumped in favor of Ringo Starr.
  3. Brain Epstein:  Manager of the Beatles before his untimely death in 1968.
  4. George Martin: Beatles' long time producer and classically trained musical arranger.
  5. Geoff Emerick: Boy genius recording engineer for the Beatles from Revolver through to "The White Album".
  6. Mal Evans: Long time Beatles' roadie and "Man Friday".
  7. Yoko Ono: Second wife of John Lennon and appendage that seemed to grow out of his side during recording sessions for "The White Album".
  8. Klaus Voorman: Long time Beatles' friend and artist/designer for the album cover for Revolver.
