What I admire most about a modern guitarist is their ability to create and use
modern electric guitar tones. I think about both are the tops ever, and about equal. |

As many other's have said before, while Hackett is good, he never pushed that many boundaries. Fripp, on the other hand, basically redefined guitar playing on albums like Starless and Red.

Hackett for me but I think that Fripp is a genius - I simply prefer to listen to Hackett's playing.

Indeed. I have a load of Steve Hackett albums and as an artist I much prefer him to Bob Fripp. But if it comes down to who do I enjoy most in terms of say guitar style/technique then that is tricky. I love both about equally in that regard but Fripp is the more challenging I suspect.

Thanks, Mr. Handey, but answer the question while you're at it. |

I wholehartedly agree with you Richardh, but it would be nice to remind that we are confronting quite different points of view in this thread, besides of course also different tastes which more than once turn out to be contrasting - my beloved music compositions are much more important to me than any composer's/musician's special place in music history, and imo one of the reasons you clearly pointed out here. Sincerily I prefer quite a few of the amazing and brilliant Steve's compositions over any Robert's important and valuable experimentalism - but of course just a matter of personal taste anyway.

I am currently digging:
Hawkwind, Rare Bird, Gong, Tangerine Dream, Khan, Iron Butterfly, and all things canterbury and hard-psych. I also love jazz! Please drop me a message with album suggestions. |

Correct of course but are you saying that you prefer someone who has a 'place in music history' over any other consideration? What about those guys who were not so lucky to be in the right place at the right time and so are largely forgotten even though they were influential at the time? (If you don't know why I'm asking then please read the original poll question on page one) Edited by richardh - October 16 2014 at 14:20 |

Steve has some fame, but he will never be remembered as important and valuable an experimentalist, as Robert was, is, and will continue to be. Sorry. Robert will have a special place in music history that Steve will never get close to, other than fame and some money!

Someone who comments on his/her own threads . And why would a tie between two prog guitar gods be so amazing, Stevey?

Horrible Sophie's Choice sort of question this. I can't seperate them and neither can the poll. I'll vote for Fripp to tie the poll up (for now)

Love Fripp but Hackett's style and versatility just rise him to the top.
