In terms of the quality of their guitar playing, they are equal yet very distinct from one another. My preference, still, is Hackett.

Most definitely Fripp, I never thought of Hackett as a guitar god, just a good one.
Fripp's inventive leads, solos and ideas are uncomparable to the stuff I heard from Hackett.

He was known for incorporating interesting arpeggios, slew picking, extensive use of sustain, innovative use of the volume pedal in phrasing, two handed tapping - not a complete list, but I'm going to bed. ...Oh yeah, I voted for Hackett, but Fripp is toward the top of my very discriminating list.

Hackett by the diameter of the universe.
Hackett is an internationally acclaimed classical guitarist, an innovator in that he was (amongst) the first electric guitarist(s) to adopt tapping techniques and sweep picking and a far more accomplished soloist.
Fripp is good at heavy riffing and fast cross picking, but compared to Hackett, he's not a great soloist. True, he is a master of effects, but the result is pretty uninteresting to me. And he's even marginally more boring as a stage performer than Hackett.

Gonna vote Hackett. If I wanted to listen to some guitar playing and asked to choose between the two, I would rather Hackett because I find his playing more expressive and often evoking a haunting quality. Fripp's appeal is a little more cerebral and he scores over Hackett more on account on his ensemble playing. As a member of a band, Fripp has more to contribute, imo, but as a soloist, Hackett stands out. The fact that he could do so even despite Banks's best efforts to drown him out under a mountain of keyboards itself speaks volumes.

He's guitar is drown because of his tone (low-mid), often not suited for live settings and hard to get into the mix in the studio.

There are some things Steve does on the electric guitar that don't make an interesting, coherent solo. I find him to be much more expressive as an acoustic guitar player. Robert impressed me on both instruments (especially in the early 70's), so it is anybody's guess who I'm voting for here. Not just a great technical player, but also a very expressive one.

Steve Hackett is very expressive on electric guitar depending on which track you choose. On "Spectral Mornings" he is God of the Andy Latimers and David Gilmour's in the world. Fripp has played electric guitar solos having almost the same affect on me...like on Eno's Here Come The Warm Jets or during Bowie's Berlin period...or even on recordings by a folk band called The Roches.

Well then, you must not prefer the style because the melody is beautiful. It's far from being a complex piece, but not a long shot when you compare it with Anthony Phillips "Nightmare". Many of the ideas repeat endlessly and the music is more dependent on the melody of the piece by taking a back seat to complexity. It's just a different method of writing that may not appeal to you.

Hackett is a melodic genius--his playing has moved me. As the great Quincy Jones said on NPR today---"there are only 12 notes---and the most important thing for me is a great melody----a melody is God's voice". I agree and Hackett has come up with some extraordinary melodies.

I'm much more moved by the 3 minute solo at the end of "Every Day" than by the tune "Spectral Mornings", which I agree drags on too much. The Every Day solo seems to have been a huge influence on artists from Mostly Autumn to Collage, and many I probably don't know.

The little breaks on the track Spectral Mornings, especially the last one, also show to me how damn good is Hackett with the melodies...

Fripp is a person that has decided to make his personal life a part of his overall message. Hackett has remained relatively private, as has most of Genesis, as far as I know. I think this is one way how both artists are weighed out in this poll.

That's a tough one to choose.....I like Hackett's individual solo guitar leads better on the Genesis tracks but I think Fripp is a better overall composer and band 'leader' who really set a tone for future prog rock bands. His leads can be melodic and pleasing but also abrasive and hard to get into at times.
Having said that KC is probably my favorite prog band.

I wholehartedly agree with you Richardh, but it would be nice to remind that we are confronting quite different points of view in this thread, besides of course also different tastes which more than once turn out to be contrasting - my beloved music compositions are much more important to me than any composer's/musician's special place in music history, and imo one of the reasons you clearly pointed out here. Sincerily I prefer quite a few of the amazing and brilliant Steve's compositions over any Robert's important and valuable experimentalism - but of course just a matter of personal taste anyway.

Indeed. I have a load of Steve Hackett albums and as an artist I much prefer him to Bob Fripp. But if it comes down to who do I enjoy most in terms of say guitar style/technique then that is tricky. I love both about equally in that regard but Fripp is the more challenging I suspect.

I never think that Fripp is guitar God. I vote for Hacket: he is a great composer and guitarist. As for me, I prefer Genesis to Crimson. And if we compare solo works of Fripp and Hacket I am for Hacket a fortiori.

Agree---Fripp was a trailblazer for sure---but his music doesn't move me the way Hackett does.

Same for me---Fripps experimentation is all fine but at the end of the day Hackett is a better guitarist --his range is amazing. Could play in a classical concert, blues band, metal band etc. His acoustic playing is sublime. Plus--his music is uplifting and melodic which is what I'm looking for in life.Uplifting. Fripps playing is super interesting but depressing and neurotic.

Fripp gets my vote but I love both nearly equally for different reasons...

In my opinion two very different styles and two great musicians Fripp - more experimental and eclectic Hackett - more academic and melodic However, Hackett's music is more close of my taste ! Only for taste .... Hackett !

Fripp for his playing, Hackett for the stronger solo career.

This like asking if I'd rather get kicked in the face or have a good time.
Steve Hackett easily, not only is he a real guitar virtuoso, but he also doesn't hate you for being a fan of his music.

A daft comparison - Fripp was a huge influence on Hackett who also went on to forge ihs own distinctive sound and approach (including classical acoustic)

Result defined by more than goal difference at this tightest of league games. There must be a 2 point difference.
And some random and tolerably contemporary picks.
Red and A Trick Of The Tail. 1 - 1
Earthbound versus Live is obvious and easy. 1 - 2
The one who had John Wetton in his band.. uh oh, 2 - 3
Ok, the one with Bruford.... oh gross gott, scheisse.... um... 3 - 4
both versatile, highly imaginative 4 - 5
Spectral Mornings gets the nod over almost anything Fripp has done... mainly because its sublime beauty is matched by it's ingenuity. 4 - 6
Jeeznis. That was close.
Whatever happened to all the fun in the world.

Sounds like Fripp and Neil Peart might get along
