More than one training point on a character always makes me nervous because it makes me feel like I screwed up (which I did).

I don't think the additional defense point would have brought you victory though. (But I really am sorry ).

You have to be careful with that one.  It's only a dagger (1d4), but the damage modifier is whatever your opponent's attack bonus is (for better or worse).

Ex. 1:

Your opponent has a +4 attack.
Then the Blade of Cain is 1d4+4 (5 to 8 points of damage- relatively powerful).

Ex. 2:

Your opponent has a -4 attack.
Then the Blade of Cain is 1d4-4 (0 to 0 points of damage- a useless thing, even with a critical hit).
