The cheeses are very important to me. They are like my teddy bears, security blankets, mouse pads, old folks home, and those things that kill toe fungus all wrapped up in a glorious whole.

I find it nuts that yourself is winning when forgiveness is something you grant to others.
1. to grant pardon for or remission of (an offense, debt, etc.); absolve. 2. to give up all claim on account of; remit (a debt, obligation, etc.). 3. to grant pardon to (a person). 4. to cease to feel resentment against: to forgive one's enemies. 5. to cancel an indebtedness or liability of: to forgive the interest owed on a loan. If you've ever forgiven or not forgiven yourself there is probably some expensive psychiatric drug out there that you could become hooked on which won't fix your problem. You are all now granted absolution from me for your self indulgences. Edited by Slartibartfast - July 04 2012 at 15:54 |

I'm surprised there is any differing opinions, I thought for sure it'd stay one sided.
I think it's always toughest t forgive yourself. The more detached you are...well the more detached you are, thus a bit easier to forgive. You can't get any closer to yourself, than you! Also you can only dwell on others so long, but you can dwell on yourself for ages...I know someone who can't forgive herself for stuff she did over 20 years ago :( |

Forgiving yourself is difficult because you're forced to live with yourself and with the consequences of your actions but in the end it's doable. It might be more difficult for some, impossible for others, but there are ways.
Forgiving family is more difficult because of the inherent loyalty you suppose they owe you. The same, to a lesser degree, with friends. But, again, bonds are stronger than blame. Forgiving strangers, on the other hand, might be impossible. There is no force moving you to forgive someone you don't give a damn about. Therefore, I choose this.

But I'd vote for acquaintainces (work mates that aren't on "friendly" terms for example.. or " friends" of friends...
Well not forgiving is rather a rare thing in my vocabulary... but the ensuing un-trust will probably last a lifetime Edited by Sean Trane - July 03 2012 at 11:12 |

let's just stay above the moral melee
prefer the sink to the gutter keep our sand-castle virtues content to be a doer as well as a thinker, prefer lifting our pen rather than un-sheath our sword |

That is a very good point - friendship, trust & respect can take a long time to earn, but a moment to lose; if you're let down by friends, it can be difficult to restore the relationship |

in my experiance, people are very rude and mean, MUCH more often than not. My natural hate for strangers has grown out of that. And, how do I make friends? I don't

How do you make friends then? Hating someone that you know nothing about right from the get go could make them start to hate you. I vote for myself, even though I find it hard to forgive some things other people have done, mainly family members.

I still haven't forgiven myself for anything that I've done in the past. I'll surely implode by the time I turn 30.

Strangers, definatly. When it comes to strangers, I hate them. I only start liking them if hey prove themselves to be good people. If they prove to be bad people, I just hate them even more.

I just hope I would never have to forgive anything to a member of my family... I'm not even sure I could forgive to a friend. But I guess it would depend on the "offence".

We forgive you for that.
I can't forgive myself because I haven't done anything to myself requiring forgiveness to myself, which I guess means I have to vote for the last option? Edited by Slartibartfast - July 02 2012 at 14:39 |

Finally, a different opinion. I was having trouble forgiving myself for creating a poll that was seeming useless.

I think forgiving yourself is pretty easy - you know how sincere your regret and remorse is - sure you'll keep beating yourself up over it, but that's human nature. Forgiving friends is hardest because it is so easy to block them out and not listen to reason, conscious, etc.

You only know the full motives and context of a decision of one person in the world - that's yourself. Consequently, yourself is the most difficult person to forgive.
